"A Tribute to the king of Pop" - Michael Jackson : Bio & Discography

Updated on February 8, 2014

For over two decades Michael Jackson had the whole world at his feet, watching his every move. He was the undisputed king of Pop. He defined Pop music for over 2 decades and took music and dance to a completely new dimension. But what was so special about Michael Jackson?

The sheer scale of his success has never been equalled. He has had the largest selling album of all time ( Thriller, which has sold more than 100 Million copies and still sells about 100,00 copies a year!), the largest audience ever (133.4 million viewers watching the NBC transmission of Super Bowl XXVII on June 31, 1993 in which Michael performed at half time), the biggest selling video ("The Making of Thriller") and has won more awards than any other artist, including 8 Grammies on a single night!! Most of the 80s and 90s were the rein of the King of Pop. But during the early 70s, the charts were ruled by the Jackson 5.

Michael Jackson was born on 29th of August, 1958 in Gary, Indiana. He began his musical career at the tender age of 5 as the lead singer of the Jackson 5, a group comprising of Michael and four of his brothers. They signed up with Motown Records, and even though the group was great, Michael with his voice and moves was recognized as an extraordinary talent even at a young age. The Jackson 5 blew everyone away with their music, with Michael as their focal point because he was so young and gifted! Some of the Jackson 5's greatest hits included "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save", and "I will be There". But Michael's initial success came at a cost. He literally lost his childhood as he spent hours on rehearsals and performances, thus embarking on a very lonely journey to fame.

When Michael felt that he was ready for creative control of his solo albums, he teamed up with Quincy Jones as his producer and released : "Off the Wall". The album, which included hits like "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough", and "Rock With You", was a great success worldwide and the first ever album to release a record breaking 4 number singles in th United States.

With his next album, Thriller, Michael Jackson came of age. A phenomenal artist was unleashed to the world. Running for around 15 minutes, the Thriller video was the first to take the medium of making short films seriously, instead of music videos, changing the whole approach of the Pop industry. The album won 7 Grammy awards and spent 80 weeks in the Billboard Top 10, including 37 weeks at the number 1 spot! This album will eternally stand as 'The Greatest Selling Album of All Time'!! Having become the biggest recording artist, Michael's next aim was to become the most spectacular touring artist.

In 1982, 47 million Americans tuned in to see Michael's first ever solo performance of Billie Jean at a Motown concert. It was here that his popularity went into orbit. That night, he crossed into as whole new audience as he unleashed the famous "Moonwalk" to the world! From then, Michael Jackson was almost as well known or his stage persona as for his singing. During a History Tour concert in Japan, Michael shot up from the bottom of the stage and just stood still. People were crying and screaming, and he hadn't even moved! He reached out for his sunglasses, and the scream went up to another pitch! He slowly took his sunglasses off, tucked them away and stood for a little longer, the scream levels constantly on the rise. But the time the music started, the audience was exhausted and he hadn't even started performing!! People loved him and went crazy when they saw him on stage! Michael made every performance special and communicates to the audience in such a way that each person felt that Michael was singing and dancing for him or her alone! That's how Michael produced his magic.

The year 1987 saw the release of Bad, Michael's final collaboration with Quincy Jones. Michael's record breaking first world solo tour saw him performing to hits such as ad, Smooth Criminal and Man in the Mirror. In 1991, Michael signed the largest ever recording contract with Sony Music and released his fourth solo album, Dangerous. He toured the world again in 1992, taking his concerts to countries that had never been visited before by a pop artist. He had this idea of ending each concert by flying off with a rocket strapped to his back! The organizers dissuaded him, but Michael persisted, and somehow he pulled of this amazing finish to every concert.

By the 1990s, Michael Jackson had reached the peak of his fame. Everywhere on Earth, people knew and recognised Michael Jackson and they could sing his songs. He was the greatest brand ever!

With the History album and Tour, Michael Jackson won back his popularity which has become tainted after the 1993 scandal. This was his most spectacular campaign, even by his own standards. Songs such as Scream, You Are Not Alone, Earth song and Stranger in Moscow topped the charts in various countries. However, Blood on the Dance Floor (1997) and Invincible (2001) failed to impress the critics.

The 3005 child molestation accusations ruined his career. By the time he was acquitted, Michaels career was well and truly over. The world waited to see if he would pick up the pieces of his illustrious career and make a comeback. In March, 2009, Michael Jackson announced a staggering 50 London concerts in July, 2009 as part of the "This Is It" tour. But to the world's shock and horror, Michael was not to survive till July. He died on the 25th of June due to an overdose of drugs.

He was the best performer the world had ever seen. He was one of a kind! He was Earth's number 1 music star. He was the one and only MICHAEL JACKSON. We miss you, Michael!

After writing some of the "notes from his trial," for a friend who was the foreman of the MJ jury... I have a different perspective of MJ. He was innocent of the charges that were brought against him, but there is the lingering "smoke" of many other similiar charges that we know about...

Thank you, am@n! I haven't seen Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" performance for some time. His life, as so many talented individuals, was tragic in so many ways. There is no denying how he changed our world.
