A Visit with Maude

Updated on April 22, 2013

Maude comes to visit

“Coo-eeeeee - Movie Master are you there dear?”

Ah now there is only one person around here that calls me ‘dear’ “I’m coming Maude, I’ll just put a lid on the pan and I’ll come to the window”

“I thought I heard you pottering around in the kitchen, dinner smells delicious what delights are you treating the adorable Nick to tonight?”

“One of his favourites Maude, Bee…(Ooops) Bean stew” I'd better change the subject a bit smartish. “How’s things then Maude?”

“Well you know mustn’t grumble, but these darn flies are testing my patience today, I’m itching in all the places I can’t reach. That’s why your wall is a Godsend dear, an absolute Godsend, I could stand here all day rubbing away those itches, it’s heaven dear pure heaven”

Motherhood

“You’re certainly looking well Maude, I think motherhood suits you!

“Thank you MM for the compliment - well, and?“

“What Maude?“

“These, Movie Master, have you noticed these?”

Maude stepped back a few steps grinning and blushing yes, I’m sure she was blushing. She waited expectantly and I knew I should be saying something complimentary, I’d obviously missed something important. I must have looked a little baffled…

“Teats dear, teats!”

My eyes fell upon the things in question, wow - they were BIG! I managed a smile, hopefully one of admiration - good, that had the desired effect for Maude.

“Aren’t they some whoppers? I always dreamed of teats this size and so did my George - bless him!” Maude stifled a giggle shyly. “And it’s all thanks to our Jack”

What do I say? “Betty and all your other friends must be envious Maude” a feeble response I know, but it was the best I could do, cows teats aren’t exactly a thing of beauty to me especially while I’m having beef stew for dinner.

Teats and Jack

“Betty especially, I keep catching her out the corner of my eye, staring…. Green with envy dear, now hers are a good size I admit, but I’ve hit a whole new level with these beauties”

There was no denying they were impressive.

“What I’m worried about MM is, are they going to stay this size? Our Jack is growing up fast and he’s getting a taste for his greens now”

I too could remember being the proud owner of swollen breasts in early motherhood. Only to be devastated a few months later, when they all too quickly shrunk back to normal size.

Jack snacking between meals

I changed the subject quickly, as Jack appeared grinning and munching. “Hi Jack, how you doing?”

“Good Movie Master, when’s dinner Mum?”

“How many times have I told you Jack, don’t talk with your mouth full” Maude spoke sternly but her words were spoken with love “you’re eating clover again, it’ll rot your teeth, stick to your greens and you will grow up big and strong like your father”

A big sigh from Jack before he carried on chewing, a beautiful mauve drooling down his chin.

Movie Master and Friends

“Your garden is looking lovely dear, are you having an Open Day again this year?”

Memories of my dear neighbours lined up at the garden wall watching the days activities with curious eyes came flooding back.

“Yes I think so Maude, probably in the summer when the garden is at it’s best”

“I shall look forward to it, it’s so nice to meet new people and we loved meeting all your friends last year. How is Mike and is the café still busy?”

Now I remember, Mike and Maude were in deep conversation most of the afternoon and it was only when refreshments were served in the Retreat I was able to drag him away.

“Mike is well thank you Maude and the café still serves the best coffee in town”

“And what about the lovely nurse and the seed, I liked them, they were like you dear, their cameras were an extension to their arms, it was quite exhausting posing for all those photos”

The memories came flooding back of Maude and Betty jostling for best position, each trying to outdo the other for exposure and popularity.

“You mean my friends, Happyboomernurse and Fennelseed, they are well and will be looking forward to the next photoshoot”

“Well I mustn’t keep you any longer MM, Jack is waiting for his dinner and my teats are getting sore, let me know when the next photoshoot and Open Day is due, I know the girls are up for it, enjoy your bean stew dear”

Hi Victoria, I was inspired to write after watching Jack having his fill of milk one day, he was sucking on those teats for what seemed ages and I kept thinking - that's gotta hurt!

Thank you so much for your great comments and votes, they are much appreciated, best wishes Lesley

I can't beleive how European cows look like American cows. Mmm, learn something new everyday. You may have tricked them over your stew, but be careful. They may offer you freshed baked cow pies on their next visit. DON'T EAT THEM!

Hi Femme, most of our garden is at the front and side of the property, so our kitchen at the back is very close to the meadow - very handy for when Maude and I have a chat!

I love your story about Elsie and Beauregard, they sound like hub material!!!

Thank you so much for visiting and leaving your wonderful comments, made my day:-) enjoy yours and take care, Lesley

      MM,

This one totally stole my heart, lol. The conversation, the photos ... the whole thing is fresh, funny, and heart warming.

I love the wall, and the view from your kitchen window is spectacular! You've surely got the best kitchen view in the whole UK!

Some friends and I make a trip together each year, to the Fort Worth Stock Show. It's one of my favorite events of the year, along with Christmas and my annual birthday bash in the Fort Worth Stockyards. The annaul Stock Show adventure isn't complete until we've searched the exhibits for Elsie and her calf, Beauregard. They're the representatives for the Borden Dairy Company. Elsie never changes, and Beauregard never grows up, lol, and they're always groomed to perfection. Elsie has her own impressive pen, and Beauregard has a pen that is built to look like a baby bed. They're very gentle natured, and tolerate several hundred pets and pats per day, as people gather to see them, and take their photos.

Your Maude and Jack are just as cute, and it's very cool that you get to spend a whole more time with them than we get to spend with Elsie and Beauregard. :)

Loved the hub, and have to share it!

Hi Derdriu, I'm so pleased you enjoyed meeting Maude, she really is quite adorable!

I'm thinking she doesn't have much of a sense of smell as we cook a lot of beef and I'm sure we wouldn't see so much of her if she realised it wasn't bean stew after all!

Many thanks for your comments and much appreciated votes, take care and have a wonderful weekend, best wishes Lesley

Lesley, Your photographs are so perfectly matched with the story. You had me from the very beginning, and I was an absolute goner with bean stew. It shows how trusting Maude is and what a great interaction you all have that she accepts what you say and doesn't question if her nostrils tell her otherwise. But then again, perhaps cows don't have a great sense of smell!

The family photos are all lovely although I had to wait to the end to look at them since I could do nothing else than read your lively write-up from beginning to end in one fell swoop!

      UP + UFABI. Shared.

Respectfully, and with many appreciative and belly-laughing thanks, Derdriu

Marvelous MM. I was giggling so hard I forgot to click 'I'm listening' at Pandora. The pics are superb and dance with artistic interpretation of a simple fact. A must read for the inquiring mind. Most remember Maude from the early 70's portrayed by Beatrice Author. I don' t know if that was mentioned above or not. Similarities may ring true, like their attitudes with life is true blue. Highly recommended and a must read. Don't hold any drinks or they will spill

Cows are like big dogs that aren't very bright. They'll come right up to you after a time in their field. They are curious. But, they'll knock over the survey equipment, so best to keep them away.

For the dialogue, one of the cows should say, "What's for dinner?"

As in the marketing slogan, "Beef, it's what's for dinner."

Funny Molly mentioned ads, I see a 'Vegetarian food deals. Maybe Maud arranged that one. haha

Hi Peggy, they must be the most photogenic cows ever - especially Maude!

Let's hope she never finds out about 'beef stew' she might not be so chatty and neighbourly then!

Many thanks for stopping by, best wishes Lesley

To be able to sit on your balcony and have a conversation with a visiting cow, just priceless.

Hello Lesley, my sides are splitting. Give my regards to Maude, Jack, Betty and Jane. It's no accident that Maude shows up about dinner time. Great photos.

MM, is this actually your back yard?? I was joking before when I said you lived in the Shire, but now I'm beginning to wonder! What beautiful animals, and your story is so cute. You really do live in a magical spot. (BTW, watch your ads with this one. Heaven knows what they'll do.) Up and funny!

Loved this story. Wish I had cows near by to come for a little visit. They are so sweet. I can hear the donkey behind us but never get to see him. Voted Up

      Hi Lesley,

This is so cute! Absolutely loved the photos of your neighboring cows and your gorgeous stone wall. Good thing that they did not realize what you were REALLY cooking! Haha! Maude, Jack, Betty and Jane are very photographic! :))
