Death Race Movie Review
Death Race, a remake of Death Race 2000 which was a Roger Corman movie back in the 70's, this remake does better than that film and creates a unique but quite good film, set in the not so distant future 2012 to be exact and some of the car stunts are intense.
The story is about a man named Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) who is framed for the murder of his wife and whilst in prison he is enlisted in the deadly Death Race, so that he will regain his freedom if he wins the race, but as he should, he doesn't believe the corrupt authorities who are more concerned about profit and ratings for the televised car race of death and so he plans his escape so he can be reunited with his baby daughter but on the way he finds out who really murdered his wife and so most of the movie it's filled with some punch ups and some spectacular car crash stunts with the odd splattered driver thrown in for good measure.
It's nice in this movie that Jason Stathams American accent has improved vastly when he was in Jet Li's The One and goes to show that actors really can improve their range, of course Statham is an action veteran movie star now, with such films as The Transporter under his belt and his bit part in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels too, and not to mention Crank, you just know this ones going to be good and it is.
The cars all look quite Mad Max 2 Road Warrior worthy with mini-guns fitted onto the cars and rocket launchers too for when the races get quite deadly, the director Paul Anderson wrote the story and screenplay for this updated version of an old car race classic, but the main part of the story remains the same, a deadly race that whoever wins 5 straight races will win their freedom, of course with this race, no one seems to ever truly get there to complete five races, sure some win a few races and then they get killed, so I guess that's the nature of the game, quite brutal.
The films ending was good, no bleak ending or anything like that, in fact I liked the ending as the bad guys got what was coming to them and well the good guys won.
I recommend this movie, because of it's ace action car stunts and one particular splatter of one of the drivers that just made me laugh as it is replayed several times through the film, just because it was that good I guess and I tried to pause it and play it frame by frame to see the dummy and they cut it together quite good, because you can hardly see it.
Go and watch Death Race!
