Sherlock Holmes - Movie Review
Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes, the very mention of this classic british and iconic scotland yard detective is enough to make people think of a smoking pipe and many other actors that have played him, including Data's (from Star Trek: The Next Generation) turn as the Baker Street super detective, but when you watch this film, you see a truly brilliant performance by Robert Downey Jnr and his English accent is believable and his explanations of all things when he finds the clues and puts things together in the murder mystery of the films story.
This Sherlock Holmes film is a good update to a classic that hasn't been on our tv screens for awhile, let alone a blockbuster movie at the cinema, I always remember those classic Sherlock Holmes stories, such as The Hounds Of The Baskervilles and you can see in this movie that the film makers actually care about bringing this much loved character back onto our screens in the form of a like-able rogue in the form of Robert Downey Jnr, if you want to see acting range I suggest you check out the excellent comedy Tropic Thunder with him in, I laughed my arse off with that film.
Story wise, it has all the goodies of a classic, although it does serve as an introductory movie for an upcoming sequel maybe, with the mention near the end of the film of Professor Moriarty which we all know is the evil criminal mastermind and nemesis of Sherlock Holmes.
We start off with a ritual sacrifice that is taking place and Holmes and good old Doctor Watson are there to stop it and they fight in this movie, quite well I might add, but I think that's down to Director Guy Ritchie's who I thought wouldn't be able to pull off this movie, but I was wrong and his directing has certainly gone up in my estimation, although I did love Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, just it was a different film entirely and to compare the two movies is just a daft thing to do.
And I liked the way the story gives an almost fantasy feel, although there are some solid scientific explanations for the fantasy elements at the end which was to be expected, just like in The Young Sherlock Holmes Movie of the 80's.
Sherlock Holmes is a good film and one that really stood out for me as I didn't expect much from it from the trailer alone, but I was proved wrong and it had all the ingredients of a good film and young kids can watch it too, which is even better.
