Yuko Oshima With Atsuko Maeda Both of Whom are in the Music Video for Heavy Rotation

"Heavy Rotation" Is Definitely a Hit Single for Japan's AKB48

Perhaps other than the song called Aitakatta no single may have gotten as much attention as the pop music song "Heavy Rotation" has. Heavy Rotation is the 17th major single released by pop music group AKB48 and the song has become not only a major hit, but I would say it has defined who AKB48 really are as a group.

Heavy Rotation Features Yuko Oshima as a Sort of Front Woman

Heavy Rotation features the beautiful Yuko Oshima named as center for this single. The title of this song is more famously known as “Hebirote.”

Heavy Rotation Is a Very High Energy Song

Heavy Rotation was released on August 18, 2010, almost ten years ago, well nine since we are in the year 2019. The song begins with Oshima chanting “one two, three, four,” as what happens is we hear a hybrid of pop and rock as this song is one of their earliest high energy songs.

Heavy Rotation Was Released in a Very Important Year

The single before this song called “Ponytail to ShuShu” had tickets in which people who bought them would vote for the member that would take part in the song. Because Oshima had won the 2010 AKB48 General Election, she was named as “center” for this song and she was also featured as the cover girl for the Type B version of the song. Heavy Rotation is more than just a high energy song; it is VERY significant. Why is the song Heavy Rotation significant? It is because the song has set several records

Chart Records Set For Heavy Rotation

  • Heavy Rotation ended up being the 2nd best-selling single in Japan in 2010! This is a rather remarkable feat considering that they had to compete with other groups such as Morning Musume.
  • This was the first AKB48 single to have shipped 600,000 copies.
  • This song made AKB48 the third female artist to have first week sales of over 500,000. However, AKB48 became the first one to accomplish this.
  • The single as of this writing has spent the longest period of time on the musical charts at 123 weeks.

Other Interesting Information About "Heavy Rotation"

Heavy Rotation also marked the first Senbatsu appearance for now former member Haruka Nakagawa. Note: Senbatsu is the term used to describe the General Elections. There is a cover for the Type B version of the song which happens to be Oshima’s first appearance on a single cover of any kind. Heavy Rotation would also be the last single for Erena Ono before she would graduate. Heavy Rotation made history as the third AKB48 single that has an English name. The other two before this one were BINGO! and River. Heavy Rotation performed so well that the song was charted at #1 in the Request Hour Set list Best 100 of 2011 and 2012.
