Why is "Kimi Wa Melody" a Significant Song in the Career of Girl Group AKB48?

Kimi Wa Melody is the next pop music song to be reviewed! Yes indeed it is time for a look at another song by famous girl group AKB48. Kimi Wa Melody was released on March 9, 2016 and was the 43rd major single released by the group. It is also the group’s 10th anniversary single as well as another single that sold over a million copies in its first day of release and in the process, surpassing the weekly sales of the previous single called Kuchibiru ni Be My Baby. What is it with AKB48 and these really long song titles? I bet you might be wondering the same thing. Anyway, Kimi Wa Melody also has two amazing stats to its credit. They are:

Two Notable Statistics for Kimi Wa Melody

  1. The 30th single to reach the #1 spot on the Oricon Singles Charts
  2. The 24th single to sell over a million copies in a single week. For the purposes of this review, the exact number of copies sold will not be included this time.

Kimi Wa Melody the Farewell Single for Minami Takahashi & Sae Miyazawa

Kimi Wa Melody is also the last single to feature Minami Takahashi and Sae Miyazawa as members. The video for this song was directed by Mika Ninagawa who also worked earlier in the hit single Heavy Rotation, Sayonara Crawl and Sugar Rush. The song was first done on January 24th three years ago on the final day of the event called AKB48 Group Request Hour 2016. This is the first AKB48 single to have had five versions. Kimi Wa Melody also marks the very first time that Sakura Miyawaki was chosen as a solo center for a song.

Kimi Wa Melody Features Participation by 4 Former Members of AKB48

This is the first single since the song Flying Get to have 21 members on a title track. 17 of them were active members at the time of the single’s release and the other four were former members. These 4 former members on the single are Atsuko Maeda, Yuko Oshima, Mariko Shinoda and Tomomi Itano. Kimi Wa Melody would also turn out to be the last single participation for Minami Takahashi even though she was still a full-time member of the group AKB48. This was also the last single for Karen Iwata.

Kimi Wa Melody Limited Edition Type C Cover

This represents center Sakura Miyawaki's first ever solo cover as she is surrounded by beautiful flowers and I definitely see a spring type of theme on the cover.

What Happens in the Video for the Song Kimi Wa Melody?

The choreography and the setting for the video of this song is just beautiful! As the video starts, it shows all of the girls impeccably dressed in their beautiful kimonos as they are asleep until the song begins. There are so many chandeliers on the ceiling as the confetti drops and the girls are smiling and having the the time of their lives. There is a point in the video that I thought I would never see. That is when Atsuko Maeda and Yuko Oshima exchange kisses and they actually kiss each other on the lips as center Sakura Miyawaki watches in shock or amazement whatever you want to call it. Overall, Kimi Wa Melody can be considered one of AKB48’s best songs of all time as well.
