The Significance of the Song Teacher Teacher by AKB48

Teacher Teacher is not just another song released by AKB48. It holds special significance in the group’s history because of the fact that on July 12, 2018, the Recording Industry Association of Japan or RIAJ certified the song in triple million status making AKB48 the first ever girl group to accomplish such a feat. Teacher Teacher ended up getting to the top of the Oricon Singles Chart for the month of May 2018. The song ended up selling 1,661,038 copies on its first day of release alone! This is another example that shows that AKB48 could still continue to have massive best-selling singles that did not just stop with Sayonara Crawl back in 2013.

A Few Interesting Facts About the Song Teacher Teacher

  • This song is the first such song to feature a member of AKB48’s Team 8 as choreographic center and that person is Yui Oguri who is also a member of AKB48’s Team A.
  • The song also marks the return for some AKB48 members that took part in this single since they had last taken part in the single Tsubasa Wa Iranai which was back in 2016.
  • This is also the first AKB48 single to be released in 4 different versions since Kuchibiru Ni Be My Baby in 2015.

However, the song was first performed on April 1, 2018 for AKB48’s first solo concert in two years at the famous Saitama Super Arena. Your next question may be what is the song about and why should fans of the group even consider listening to the song?

Analysis of the Song Teacher Teacher

Lyrically, the song is literally about a student that is interested in romance with their teacher which is one of the biggest transgressions that any teacher could commit if they have a relationship with their student in the K through 12 years. Romance or the attempt at romance can get secretive, tricky and or complicated at certain times. The girl or person that recalls her encounters with her teacher remembers that while she is in school, she does not think about her feelings towards her teacher. When she sees him in the city that really startles her. She wants to go and talk with him. She says that she is okay if anyone ever starts to find out about the romance or starts gossiping about the relationship. She thinks that her teacher is cute even though he is younger than her papa. When the teacher puts himself at a distance away from her, she wonders why he is so cold and distant. She is inviting him to go out with her as she says that holding hands is up to him. The song is about how a student at a school is trying to do whatever she can to seduce a teacher as she is seeking romance with a man who is younger than her father. She thanks him for having learned so much from him and she says that she will be the one to teach him about love. At one point, the romance gets so serious that the girl says that they should be careful. She tells him that he should go home. Yet as the song goes on, she is still eager to have a relationship with him. A situation like the one that is described will go down the road of eventually ending due to more than just a failed romance.

Teacher Teacher is one of those songs that slowly builds up into a high energy kind of pop song and it is one that I find more enjoyable overall listening to than Tsubasa Wa Iranai, the group’s 44th single although that one is very good as well.

An Interesting Fact About the Song Teacher Teacher That May Be Overlooked

However, there is a discrepancy in the number of copies sold for this song in one instance because Billboard Japan stated that Teacher Teacher sold 2.5 million copies. The reason for this difference is due to fact that Oricon used something called number scaling when some fans bought large amounts of multiple copies.
