Season Nine Begins With a Bang

Season Nine of American Idol has begun. This will be a memorable season for many reasons. First off, Paula Abdul will not be judging Idol contestants as her contract was not renewed after last season. The new fourth judge will be Ellen DeGeneres. Ellen is an Emmy winning talk show host, a successful stand up comedian, writer, and one of the most influential women in the media. Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi will be returning as judges for Season Nine of American Idol.

The biggest news came on Monday, January 11th, when Simon Cowell announced that Season Nine of Idol will be his last as judge. Simon Cowell is leaving American Idol to bring his successful British series, The X Factor, to the American airwaves in 2011. FOX executives offer Cowell up to $36 million to stay on as judge of Idol but he was looking for a "new challenge".

The first two episodes of the season showed competitors trying out in Boston and Atlanta. Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, and Orlando will be featured in upcoming episodes. Once all the tryout footage is shown, it will be on to Hollywood for the grueling "Hollywood Week" where the show will go from hundreds of finalists down to the Top 36.

When American Idol goes to the live episodes, it will be interesting to see the interaction of all four judges. Kara is very knowledgeable about the music industry but do not ask her to songwrite for the Idol contestants. The Season Eight Top 10 contestants stopped using DioGuardi song she wrote for Season Eight Idol Winner Kris Allen.

Ellen is a very talented entertainer but it is hard to say how she will be judging musical talent. Randy, besides the "dog" and "yo" phrases has proven to be a pretty solid judge. Without a doubt, the main attraction is Simon Cowell. Simon is so brutally honest and is very respectable judge of musical talent. Plus, how can you not like his comments for the contestants.

I know have watched Idol religiously since Season Four when Carrie Underwood won. American Idol has produced some seriously good talent. Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, and Jennifer Hudson are very big superstars. Many Idol contestants have found a niche in the country music industry besides Carrie Underwood. Kellie Pickler and Bucky Covington are just a few names to mention.

Be sure to check out American Idol on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 8PM Eastern/7PM Central on FOX.

Update - I added the highlight of the year, so far, from the Atlanta tryouts. It is called Pants on the Ground by General Larry Platt. Here are the lyrics:

Pants on the Ground x2
Lookin` like a fool wit` yo'ure pants on the ground!
With the gold in yer mouth, Hat turned Sideways
Pants hit the ground
Call Yourself a cool cat, Looking like a fool
Walink` down town with your pants on the ground
Giddyup!
Hey! Get your pants off the ground
Lookin` like a fool
Walkin`, Talkin` with your pants on the ground
Giddyup!
Hey! get your pants off the ground
Lookin` like a foool with your pants on the ground
Go with them all, hat turned sideways
pants hit the ground
Call yourself a cool cat, loookin` like a fool
Walkin` Talkin` with your pants on the ground
BOOM!
Pants on the ground
Lookin` like aa fool
with your pants on the ground
Gold in your mouth , Hat turned sideways
pants hit the ground
Call yourself a cool cat

I usually only watch the tryout shows because they are such a hoot. It slays me that some people who are so bad actually think they sound good. Maybe this season I will watch it all since it's Simons last year. I do love his nasty comments.
