Andre Rieu

Updated on September 27, 2011

Andre Rieu - The Waltz King

Andre Rieu was born in Maastricht, Holland. His father conducted the Limburg Symphony Orchestra of Holland and the Leipzig Opera.

Classical music permeated the Rieu household, and the Rieu children were well versed in the works of the great composers. Andre and his 6 siblings were heavily involved in musical training. Each of them displayed talent and learned to play an instrument. Andre himself developed into an accomplished violinist.

As his understanding and appreciation of music grew, he developed a special fondness for the rhythms of the great Viennese waltzes. It was the waltzes that stirred his emotions and created an undeniable euphoria for him and his audiences, so it was natural that he would devote his career to that style of music.

Andre Rieu: The "Mel Gibson" of the Violin

Some fun facts about the man behind the violin.

Fact #1: Did you know that Andre takes his own red sofabed and rug with him on every single tour? This is so that he can return to a familiar environment. Even when Andre came touring around Australia, so did his furniture. It usually stays backstage with him in his changing room.

Fact #2: Another little known fact is although Andre is great fun on stage, he is a total perfectionist behind the scenes. He demands perfection from all members of his Johan Strauss Orchestra, the singers and crew members - and he gets it! Marjorie, his talented wife, is also known as a perfectionist. Many of the crew and cast are reported to be a wee bit wary of her temper too.

Fact #3: Andre is a passionate animal lover. He has three dogs: a 7 year old boxer, a 4 year old brown poodle and a 6 month old black poodle.

Fact #4: Once upon a time, Andre and his wife Marjorie contemplated opening a pizza restaurant, where Marjorie would sell pizza and Andre would play the violin. The most expensive pizza would be Pizza Paganini.

Fact #5: Andre lives in a castle in Maastricht. The castle was built in 1294. A treaty of Belgium was signed in his kitchen by a duke in 1932!

Fact #6: Andre had his first piano lessons in the castle when he was a child. Apparently, he hated the lessons and remembers the castle as being very gloomy.

Some tidbits about the Johan Strauss Orchestra Members

Andre loves to play up to his audiences. It gives him great joy to give his audience members great joy. He actively encourages his Orchestra members to act out and have fun in order to ensure all audience members have the time of their life! There are a couple real 'clowns' in the orchestra: Rudd who plays the trombone, Rene and Roger, who both play the trumpet (I call them the 'twins'), Manoe who plays the clarinet/saxophone - she can also play 7 other instruments and sing as well! And Teun on the flute.

There are of course the 'ladies' men: Franco Vulcano, the tall, dark and handsome double bass player with his gorgeous locks of curly dark brown hair, Cord, the violinist with his silky long blonde hair and tall, dark and super handsome Roland who is a percussionist.

We can't forget about the ladies either! In fact, there are so many gorgeous women in Andre's orchestra, I find it hard to pick who I think is the most beautiful! My favourites are; Jet a violinist, gorgeous viola player, Linda, the cute saxophonist Sanne and my absolute favourites: the soprano singers: Suzan, Carla and Carmen. I love them all!

While there are a few couples amongst the JSO, one of the married couples is Rudd Merx, the trombone player and Lin Jong the violin player.

Marcelle Falize is the main percussionist in the JSO. His son Glen, recently joined alongside his father as a fully pledged member of the JSO! What a proud father!

Manoe Konings has been with Andre since right from the beginning. She originally was not only an orchestra member, but also his secretary too!

Then there is Frank Steins, who plays quite a few different instruments himself, of which the violin is his main instrument in the orchestra. Frank is also the city carillon player for Maastricht, Weert and Heerlen and has been in Andre's orchestra since he was 18 - the day after he graduated from Uni! Frank has also got a great sense of humour and when he gets going, all hell can break loose!

Suzan Erens - Soprano

The girl with the voice of an angel.

Suzan was born in Heerlen in the Netherlands.

She auditioned for Andre and he was touched by her special voice. In 2000 Suzan was one of the singers in the choir where she travelled with the JSO (Johan Strauss Orchestra) during the La Vie est Belle' tour. When she finished her studies at the Conservatory in Maastrichtshe, she became the first solo soprano Andre used in his concerts. One evening when Frank was playing piano, he asked her to join in. She did and Andre heard her sing; he liked what he heard and she has been a soloist ever since then.

Suzan sings many of the songs that are in English. She has a stunning voice that makes songs like "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Somewhere over the Rainbow", and "I Belong To Me" absolutely beautiful. She gives me goosebumps of pure pleasure when she sings!

Suzan Erens As Sissi

She sang her heart out in Melbourne 2008 at the live concert, even though her microphone wasn't switched on.

She stole our hearts with her beautiful angelic voice singing, "I Belong To Me".

And she looks stunning in her blue dress!

I Will Follow Him by Carla, Celine & Suzan

From the movie, "Sister Act", Carla, Celine and Suzan sing "I Will Follow Him" along with the Harlem Gospel Choir in 2006 at the Radio City Music Hall in New York.

I will follow him, follow him wherever he may go

There isn't an ocean too deep

A mountain so high it can keep me away

I must follow him, ever since he touched my hand I knew

That near him I always must be.....

And nothing can keep him from me

He is my destiny.....

I love him, I love him, I love him

And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow

He'll always be my true love, my true love, my true love

From now until forever, forever, forever.....

I will follow him, follow him wherever he may go

There isn't an ocean too deep....

A mountain so high it can keep, keep me away

Away from my love.

I love him, I love him, I love him

And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow

He'll always be my true love, my true love, my true love

From now until forever, forever, forever

I will follow him, follow him wherever he may go

There isn't an ocean too deep

A mountain so high it can keep, keep me away

Away from my love...

Do-do do-do-do do-do-do and where he goes

I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow

I know I'll always love him

Suzan Erens is one one of the world's most beautiful voices...How I wish we had more singers like her,,,She has such a magnetic personality....Andre Rieu refused to introduce her to me in Calgary Alberta Canada....I wanted to take her out for a pizza...Instead I had to take Andre....He still owes me $3.50....My lawsuit is just being filed.

Andre Rieu's music is healing and brings peace in a very troubled world. As you watch his audiences enjoy his music you would not know their origin unless Andre speaks a language of a country. People are people all over the world, they all have the same love of art and music. If it was left to those in Andre's audiences - there would be no wars.

Andre' Rieu is genius, a great conductor. All the JSO is fantastic but Sanne Mestrom is marvelous woman and a fantastic saxophone player (jackety sax). She is like a Canova statue; her body is desiderable. Also the choir is very good especially the woman, sixth or seventh in the formation from the left to the right (I don't know her name) is very capable but she is also brava, bella, gorgeous and sensual.

@anonymous: Thanks for letting me know! I thought I was in the wrong because I'm sure I read that he is married to someone else, and they have the twins. (Saw their picture on one of the DVD's I think the one made in Mexico after Andre's illness.) Wonder if anyone of you has a recent picture of Andre and Marjorie together? I think she must be a marvelous woman! I love her because she must be the drive behind Andre's success.

      Regards to all
