Anime: Best of Hayao Miyazaki

Updated on September 7, 2009

Hayao Miyazaki

If you haven't watched any of Hayao Miyazaki's anime films, I highly suggest you do so. The movies listed below are definetely some of my favorite movie of all time. Miyazaki really has a way of transporting the viewer into a different world. All of his movies are incredibly unique, and the animation is great. Below are my 5 favorite Hayao Miyazaki films.

1. Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke is by far my favorite Myazaki film. I have watched it five times, and it never gets old. The movie touches on some real-world issues and is full of amazing creatures. Princess Mononoke appeals to adults and children. However, it is slightly gory for those under the age of 13. If you haven't watched this great film, do yourself a favor and buy it or find it online.

2. Spirited Away

I actually watched Spirited Away before Princess Mononoke. The movie was so incredible that I was persuaded to buy more of Miyazaki's films. As in Princess Mononoke, there are many fantastical creatures in Spirited Away. The animation in this film is, in my opinion, even better than that in all of Miyazaki's other films. Spirited away is great for children and adults. There are no gory scenes and the characters are very charming. Spirited Away will leave you wanting to watch more. I haven't met anyone who didn't thoroughly enjoy this film.

3. Howl's Moving Castle

Howl's Moving Castle was a really spectacular film. The characters are very funny and interesting, and the animation, as in most of Miyazaki's movies, is flawless. I really enjoyed watching Howl's Moving Castle. The scenery is so incredible that you forget the film is animated. Howl's Moving Castle brings you to another world full of fun and adventure. It is a great family movie, and I am sure you will like it.

4. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Nausicaa for short) was very enjoyable. I just watched this film about a week ago hoping it would be as good as Miyazaki's others. Hayao certainly did not let me down. The movie is beautiful, and the plot is nothing less than amazing. Miyazaki's originality really shines through in this movie. It is one of the most unique films I have ever seen. I highly recommend this film to anyone who is looking for an adventure right in their own house.

5. Kiki's Delivery Service

While the animation in Kiki's Delivery Service is the same as in Miyazaki's other films, the story is not. I am not at all saying the story is not strong, it just doesn't have the same amzing creatures. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this movie. It was very fun to watch. Kiki's Delivery Service does seem to be more kid-oriented than the aforementioned films, but many adults I know (including my parents) still really liked it.

dohn121: Thanks for your comment. I'm glad to hear that your a Miyazaki fan too. I do like My Neighbor Totoro, but, as you say, "it is very Nickelodeon." That's the only reason it didn't make my top 5. Again, thanks for the comment!

Gosh, Marshall! I was going to write this hub next week! Now I'm not even gonna try! Great job, my man. I'm a huge Miyazaki fan too.

For the top Miyazaki movie, It's a dead tie between Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke: Spirited Away has the best storyline out of all his films and Princess Mononoke has the best color and animation. What a huge treat for viewers!

Just one movie I might add is My Neighbor Totoro, in terms of storyline. My only knock is that it is very Nickelodeon if you know what I mean :D

You did a wonderful job on this Marshall. Thank you again.
