About Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress)

Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, or also known as Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, is a post-apocalyptic series that is very reminiscent of the overwhelmingly popular anime, Shingeki no kyojin (Attack on Titan). But instead of titans, this one has zombie-like creatures called—the Kabane!

Action-packed, steampunk and train themed, a visual eye-candy, a compelling story, the drama and uncanny predicament—this show has the makings of another mega-hit! Its post-apocalyptic story about the zombie-like kabane and their steel-caged hearts, as well as humanity’s dire struggle against them is a gripping gem to behold. The potential is overwhelming! And so is the execution! Will this series prove to be another ambitious legend? We’ll see! Just board the Hayajiro and wield the Tsuranukizutsu for a full immersive experience!

With everything said, I’m laying upon here the Anime like Koutetsujou no Kabaneri! Of course, Shingeki no Kyojin is one of them, but there’s more! Soon you’ll find out. Just move along and witness what the similar shows have to offer.

1. Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

Man-eating titans are wreaking havoc outside and you’re inside a walled city that doesn’t seem capable of withstanding any more brutal giant attacks, what do you do? Be very frightened? Run for your life? Or fight back? THESE are actually the life-and-death questions daunting the denizens of the world of Shingeki no Kyojin, or also known as—Attack on Titan!

Titans—who knows where they came from or what how they came to be but, they’re a serious threat to mankind! Titans devour only humans and they won’t stop at nothing until they sink their gnarly teeth on every last bit of humanity. They’re gigantic, they’re ferocious, and they’re brutal—only their napes are vulnerable!

So how would humanity fight back? The rest of humanity remains trapped in protected walled cities. Everyone’s practically living in fear and ignorance. But when an outer layer of the giant, protective wall is breached, no choice remains! It’s now do or die! The time has come to launch an attack on titan!

Ghouls do exist! They live in the shadows. They derive their nutrition from human flesh. It’s the only way they could survive! So are ghouls to be feared? Yes! Do they deserve their destiny? Probably not. Are you going to watch this? You should!

Kaneki Ken is but a simple student—until he meets a lady named Rize. Rize is actually a ghoul, and on their first day of getting acquainted and close—she tries to eat Kaneki. Fortunately, Kaneki survives with Rize meeting a fatal accident. Or was he really fortunate? In a critical attempt for survival, the doctor transplants Rize’s organs into Kaneki. (Uh-oh, that doesn’t sound good at all!)

Kaneki survives and recovers! But as he continues his life, what awaits is totally different world. He can feel it! The changes, the transition, his new appetite—Kaneki Ken has become a ghoul!

3. Btooom!

Explosions, fight-to-the-death scenes, intense clashes, machinations, betrayals, more explosions—these are just some of the things you could expect with Btooom! And did I even ever mention, EXPLOSIONS?

On an isolated island far away, a real-life survival game is actually taking place. Everyone in the world knows that “Btooom!” is just a bomb-themed online game. But who knew that a real-life “Btooom!” actually exists?

Ryouta Sakamoto is a top-class “Btooom!” player as well as a N.E.E.T. (Not in employment, education, or training). Finding himself waking in an unknown place with special bombs in his satchel, he’ll soon find out that he’s actually trapped in a real-life version of his favorite game and is forced to play it. Survival is at stake so and he has no choice but to fight!

Alien-like creatures are invading and their first step of invasion: possess the bodies of human beings and gradually blend into society. After assimilation, the next step is—dominate the world and feed on all humans!

It was an ordinary night for Izumi Shinichi when he noticed a worm-like alien creature trying to enter his ears. The good thing is—he had his headphones on! But, the alien parasite instead dug through Shinichi’s right arm. The next day, everything was all different for Shinichi!

An alien parasite now lives in his arm, coexisting mutually with him and unable to do anything about it. Now what will Shinichi do? The strange situation isn’t actually dire compared to that of others but, with a unique case comes many more complications.

What are these parasites? What are they trying to do? Will humanity survive this new, precarious situation?

5. God Eater

The Aragami—these creatures have already destroyed and devastated a large portion of the world! They now control almost everything and are the reason why humanity has been living in fright and terror. Only a fraction of humans remain, and they live in solitude and isolation keeping ahold of what little they still have.

The good news is—mankind has found a way to counter the Aragami! From the very own cells of the enemy, mankind has created Aragami-infused weapons that are very effective against them. These weapons are called “God Arcs.” And those who wields them are known as—God Eaters!

Does humanity stand a chance now with the God Arcs at hand and the God Eaters dispatched? Will there be an end to the cycle of misery and hatred? What awaits the future of humanity? The God Arcs and the God Eaters shall be at the center stage fighting for survival and the right of everyone to exist.

6. Terra Formars

Cockroaches? Did I just hear that tight? Nooo!!! Cockroaches are icky, disgusting, and scary! Looks like Terra Formars is trying to invoke fear upon mankind with the aid of (what else?) cockroaches!

In a year far away in time, humanity has become so technologically advanced that it can now attempt to colonize mars. Preparations to set-up settlements in mars include equilibrating the atmosphere and starting an ecosystem. And the best way to do so is to send cockroaches and mosses to begin the cycle of a livable world.

Unfortunately, what seemed like a feasible plan took a wrong turn. The cockroaches that were supposed to kick-start the world have mutated into dangerous humanoid creatures. As a result, humanity’s future is starting to look grim at the outlook of these detestable creatures. Will humanity find a way to stop them? Or will humanity just succumb to its inevitable extinction?

7. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

What could be grander than an adventure that transcends the heavens?! Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is as epic as it presents mankind’s struggle of living in the shadows, exiled by maniac creatures presently ruling the surface. This show is like Koutetsujou no Kabaneri but with a lighter atmosphere and a much more epic outlook.

In a far-off age, the human race has succumbed to living underground, unaware of what’s on the surface. No notions of clouds and skies, no stars, no rain, just tremors and earthquakes! One day, two unusual lads rises to bring humanity up to the surface to fulfill a dream that has been locked for so long. One is a digger and one is a man full of determination. Together, they shall piece the heavens and grab the most epic future for everyone!

8. Elfen Lied

There’s a new threat to the world! Wielding strange powers called “vectors,” capable of slicing through anything and even infecting people with the virus, the threat known as “Diclonius” are brewing a storm for the future. Actually, it’s just one that’s the most dangerous of all—Lucy!

Suffering from a traumatic past that most diclonius experience, Lucy is bent on killing all humans and destroying the world. She’s been experimented upon and used as a lab mouse, and so, when opportunity knocks at her door—she begins slaughtering everyone in sight!

Now that she has escaped, will all hell break loose as well? Is there no stopping this menace? What exactly are diclonius? Who is Lucy? The bloody mess of a tragic tale unfolds!

A virus is on the loose and it kills people of more than thirteen of age! And that’s not all—creatures of the dark known as vampires have emerge simultaneously from the shadows to enslave humanity. Thus, a terrible nightmare of a scenario descends upon mankind!

Yuiichirou and Mikaela are among the young ones of the generation that is enslaved by the vampires. In exchange for survival, they are forced to offer their blood. One day, both of them devise a plan to escape—a plan that ends in failure. As a result, only Yuuichirou survives and escapes from the clutches of the vampires.

And so now, he’s thirsty for revenge and is determined to put an end to the vampires once and for all! But is it only the vampires? What about the virus? A conspiracy seems to be cloaked in a veil of darkness. What awaits Yuuichirou and his vow of revenge?

Warning, warning, warning! Black Bullet is another similar show of a totally different caliber! Walled cities, check! Post-apocalyptic setting, check! Monsters plague-ing humans, check! Brink of extinction scenario, check!

With society devastated and left at the brink of extinction by the virus known as “Gastrea,” mankind has lived in the protective enclosures of walled cities. The Gastrea is ruthless and the only thing that could combat it is the metal known as “Varanium.”

With the rise of the virus comes an organization dedicated to fighting it—the Civil Security! With Rentaro as member and the “cursed child” Enju as his partner, they shall both fight the Gastrea and try to secure an uplifting future for everyone.
