About Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (My Little Monster!)

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (a.k.a. My Little Monster!) tells the story of two indifferent individuals, who knows nothing of the social norm, exploring new budding feelings and emotions. They are high school students Shizuku Mizutani and Haru Yoshida!

Despite encountering each other in a peculiar circumstance, the encounter has led to them opening-up in ways they never have thought would be possible. Both are socially awkward and inept, so what’s with all the sudden escalation?! Unbeknownst to both of them, this is all the beginning of what will soon change their lives for good—love!

This anime is so romantic and comical as it is heart-tugging! That is why, it’s a hit for many people. It’s so sweet and charming that it can’t be helped if your heartstrings are tugged in undefinable ways. Well, this is the main point of the show! After all, love is what makes the world go round.

The small but terrible Taiga Aisaka is the “Palmtop Tiger” while the gentle yet menace-looking Ryuuji Takasu is the “Delinquent!” Both are high school students with their own unique circumstances who’ll fatefully pair-up in order to tackle the bittersweet moments of high school life.

At first, Taiga and Ryuuji were total strangers. But then, their secret desires led them to commit a mistake that will tie both of them together. Now, they have to help each other out! That is—achieve their personal goals and make sure that they succeed. But as they work towards their goals, new feelings of conflict and complexity sprout! This is the story of an unexpected pairing defying all odds and slowly getting closer and closer to each other.

Talk about change, Futaba Yoshioka and Tanaka Kou are walking towards a world clustered with variation. When they were in middle school, they’ve always had each other as fate seemed to work in their favor. Yoshioka was the cute, girly type while Kou was the innocent, quiet type. From an all-boys school to a co-ed school, Seika High School has a plenty share of problems from the transition—especially regarding the boy-girl ratio, with boys outnumbering the girls. Good thing there exists the “Demon President” of the student council—Misaki Ayuzawa. She’s strong, charismatic, and strict, and she’ll do everything to protect the girls of the school! As a result, she is looked-up upon by the girls and detested by the boys.

Misaki has one big secret she doesn’t want to be revealed though. She works as a maid in a Maid Café! Everything’s going well with her role and secret until one day, the most popular boy of the school—Takumi Usui—finds out her secret! Is this the end of Misaki’s reign, or will the encounter just lead to a new, memorable experience in her school life?

Seemingly out from the horror movie “The Ring”, Sawako Kuronuma does share some striking resemblance with Sadako! That is, until one day, a boy named Kazehaya Shouta walks into her life.

Shouta is one of the most popular guys in class and is one who definitely has a refreshing personality. The very moment he connects with Sawako, sparks threw Sawako’s usual life in disarray. Is this the start of something new? Will lasting friendship finally knock on Sawako’s door? Or is this something even greater than friendship?

Despite everything though, competitions and all, Kei looks after Hikari with all his heart. Hikari doesn’t know this herself, but she does the same thing unwittingly. Small guy meets tall gal—it’s a strange world after all! And as if their height complex isn’t enough, their love story is a whole lot more complicated! Risa Koizumi is the tall girl while Atsushi Ootani is small guy. With romance not going in their favor the first time, they get closer only to feel a weird attraction between one another.

Will Atsushi and Risa form a love story like no other? Or will both of them end-up being laughing stocks for everyone? No matter what, love is indeed a complex thing and all its complexities are just beginning for Atsushi and Risa.

A lie—this was all it took for Erika Shinohara to land in a very awkward and precarious situation. What was her lie all about? Well, mostly about her presumed love interest—a good-looking stranger named Sata Kyouya. Unknown to her though, the love interest she’s talking about is also a student in her school. And yeah, he knows everything!

It’s too late for Erika now! The only way to get out of her lie is to ask Kyouya to actually pretend to be her boyfriend. But everything has a price and Kyouya is not really how he seems to be to everyone. Kyouya is actually one who has the personality of a “Black Prince.” And so, things have become even more intricate for Erika. This is all just the beginning though because Erika will soon find out what her lie actually lead to.

10. Sakurasou no Pet no Kanojo (The Pet Girl of Sakurasou)

What will a kind heart lead Sorata Kanda to? Well, at first, he saved some kittens. Then what? His good deed landed him to a peculiar dormitory—the Sakura Hall. Sakura Hall is a place where brilliant yet hard-to-handle students are placed. Sorata doesn’t like it but he has no choice! And now, he has to deal with the most problematic student of them all—Shiina Mashiro!

Mashiiro is a savant who doesn’t know anything except her art. And so, Sorata is left with no choice but to take care of her. The care program is what everyone calls at Sakura Hall the “Mashiro Duty!” Sorata now has his hands full with everything and everyone. But then, this is actually the start of the romantic highlight of his life. Sorata’s in for one of the most unforgettable moment of his existence.

      Interesting list, especially in terms of timing--I only JUST got a copy of My Little Monster about two weeks ago. It also intrigues me that you started your list of similar shows with Toradora, which I recently commented in a video struck me as a likely similar series. I have actually only seen that one out of all of these, but have already pegged nearly all of those shows to watch; I also own Golden Time, Maid-Sama and Special A and intend to watch them (I hope) sooner than later. Anyway, a fun list as always, and I really look forward to seeing more of these.
