The Story: Back in elementary school, four boys became friends with the sport of swimming tying them together. They swam, they competed, and ultimately claimed victory in a tournament. Such was their legacy and such was their history; but, who would have thought that their paths would cross again in high school? Everyone still loves swimming, but one will cause an unforgettable rife that will push everyone to their utmost limits.

The Verdict: Like Yuri on Ice, this show was made for people who fancy bromance moments and male fanservice. Through and through though, it’s still a sports anime; and that means a lot of intense sporty scenes and action for you! And the story? It’s a high-quality one full of competitive spirit, highly-anticipated instances, and exciting challenges that are dashed with a big helping of well-fitted clichés and tropes.

2. Ginban Kaleidoscope

Ginban Kaleidoscope

The Story: This is the story of 16-year-old girl Tazusa Sakurano. She’s a figure skater and a girl with a big attitude. On the other hand, there’s Pete Pumps—a stunt pilot who just died after performing a dangerous air stunt. For some reason, Pete Pumps has become a ghost and is now possessing the body of Tazusa. What in the world is happening? Tazusa only wants to join the Winter Olympics, but now, she has to deal with a strange ghost in addition to her usual problem with the meddlesome media people.

The Verdict: This is another figure skating anime. Also, the premise of Ginban Kaleidoscope is actually the same as Yuri in Ice. The main character is experiencing a major down in her career—in this case, figure skating. But then, someone unexpected comes into her life to motivate and inspire her to do better. Add some romance and relational elements into the fray and what you’ve got is a complete meal of a show. Ginban Kaleidoscope may not be the best in its genre, but it is sure that it will give you a day’s worth (or even a week’s worth) of laughs and tears.

3. Haikyuu!!

Haikyuu!!

The Story: Shouyou Hinata’s volleyball idol is the “Little Giant”—a powerful small-statured player who towers above everything! As such, his dream is to become like his idol in the future. He then revives the volleyball club of his middle school only to suffer painful defeat from the “King of the Court”—Tobio Kageyama. And so, a new goal is added to his list—train and crush Tobio! Come high school, Shouyou comes upon very shocking news—Tobio is his school mate and he is going to be his teammate in the volleyball club!

The Verdict: Intense sports action is what you’ll also find in Haikyuu!! And mind you, this is as real as it can get. Everything feels close to reality. There are no impossible moves or crazy stunts. It’s just volleyball. Add a great cast of characters and a whole lot of training and motivational cues and you’ve got this anime called Haikyuu!!

4. Days

Days

The Story: Tsukushi Tsukamoto is a young man who is not athletic but is strong-willed. On the other hand, Jin Kazama is a genius when it comes to sports. Due to unforetold circumstances, the two gets dragged into the world of soccer. Tsukushi may not be athletic, but Jin has found some overwhelming potential in him. Will it hold true until the end? Will soccer be the sport that will bring them success?

The Verdict: Days is another sports anime show that not only focuses on the sport itself but also on the players themselves. Trust me, there’s a big character development waiting for you in this anime; and that’s what makes it special. It has moments that will make you smile. It has moments that will make you feel down in the dumps. It has moments that will take you high with the sports action. Days isn’t very popular, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch it. I suggest you do because it has its own charm that might make you love it more than anything else.

5. No.6

No.6
No.6 | Source

The Story: No. 6 is a city that is as perfect as it is peaceful. However, not everything is what it actually is—No. 6 is hiding a terrible secret! Young Shion is a boy who’s about to sink deeper into all the mess of the city. Thanks to a certain enigmatic guy named Nezumi, Shion’s usual way of living is shattered and changed forever. What will he learn and discover? What is the truth behind the perfect city known as No. 6?

The Verdict: If Yuri on Ice has Yuri and Victor, then No. 6 has Shion and Nezumi. Mind you, No. 6 is actually also a non-shounen Ai series with heavy focus on the relationship of two main male protagonists and their character developments. As for the overall essence, No. 6 is a beautiful anime that will lull you into getting emotionally attached with the characters and pull you compulsorily into the fabulous yet heartfelt story.

6. Starmyu

Starmyu

The Story: Five students, one goal—to enter the Star Frame Classs! Music is their passion so the best musical class is the right class to go. However, things are not looking so easy for them. Luckily, a member of the Kaou-kai—Itsuki Ootori—spots them. This is their chance. This is their ticket to the melodic world of music.

The Verdict: “Never give up”—this is the primary message of this anime. It broadcasts things about trying your best to achieve your dreams and never letting the downs to pull you back. Starmyu is also about friendship and bonds. In this case, it showcases the stunning relationship between boys. Many are put-off by this show but in reality, it’s just too underestimated. Trust me, it’s quite good and enjoyable if you just give it the chance.

7. Kuroko no Basket (Kuroko’s Basketball)

Kuroko no Basket (Kuroko’s Basketball)

The Story: Kuroko Tetsuya is one of the newest basketball team members of Seirin High School. What everyone doesn’t know is Tetsuya was actually the phantom 6th member of the super famous “Generation of Miracles” of Teiko Junior High School. With him added to the team, a new generation begins. The upcoming games won’t be easy though because the other members from Tetsuya’s previous team are also out to win everything!

The Verdict: Since we are talking about sports anime shows, then it would be a shame if we don’t talk about Kuroko no Basket. Yes, this show is on this list for the reason of it being a sports anime and a show with a lot of boys. Believe me on this though, Kuroko no Basket has the power to surprise you with all the high-end basketball action it possesses. The moves presented therein are very spectacular you’d surely knock your socks off your feet!

8. Ping Pong The Animation

Ping Pong The Animation

The Story: Table Tennis is the sport both Peco and Smile loves. As a matter of fact, it is because of table tennis that both of them are very close friends in the first place. Peco has the ambition to become a table tennis star while Smile, on the other hand, is contented with just having fun playing the sport. As the inter-high table tennis competition draws near, what awaits both friends as the chant “The hero comes. The hero comes. The hero comes.” comes into play?

The Verdict: Ping Pong The Animation is very unique. It’s actually so unique that it deserves more attention than it ever got. Just like Yuri in Ice, Ping Pong The Animation explores every nuance the sport in focus has. The ups, the downs, the middles—everything is dissected! And although this one needs some getting-used-to in terms of art and animation, Ping Pong The Animation is actually a work of art with a grand story and a great character development.

9. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April)

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April)

The Story: Kousei Arima is a piano prodigy who can no longer hear his own music. Stuff happened in the past and now he’s contented with living a normal high school life. But then, a mysterious girl by the name of Kaori Miyazono barges into his life with intentions beyond what anyone could imagine. Is she actually the person who will paint new colors to Kousei’s music and life?

The Verdict: Although Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso has less drama, it still talks about people who are hopelessly on the verge of quitting but then are spurred into action again by someone they cherish. That’s right, it’s the power of motivation and love that makes everything move. The major theme of this anime is music so prepare to ride the notes of drama and breeze along the melody of the wonderful musical performance. Be sure to ready your tissues because by the end of it all, your heart would surely have felt all the harmonic nuances of every heart-touching emotion.

10. Keijo!!!!!!!!

Keijo!!!!!!!!
Keijo!!!!!!!! | Source

The Story: Presenting…the new sport known as Keijo. It’s a sport wherein female participants battle it all out using nothing but their butts and breasts. With a “land” surrounded by water as a stage, it’s time to see who’s the best! But first, all must train hard and discover their unique skills. 17-year-old Nozomi Kaminashi is about to enter the world of Keijo. Does she have what it takes to reach the peak of success? Or will she flop and sink to the bottom?

The Verdict: The thing with Keijo being on this list has something to do with it having a lot of fanservice material. The butts, the breasts, and the action involving the butts and the breasts are what makes this anime a unique and oddly satisfying show. Of course, the sport presented by this show is a figment of the imagination, but that didn’t stop it from gaining fame and popularity. As a matter of fact, Keijo is such an exciting sport that every moment actually counts. Thus, this show has become a hit for a lot of people around the world.
