Plot Synopsis of Btooom!:

Known as one of the most popular online game in the world, Btooom is making a trend everywhere! But unlike the usual games with guns and knives, this one uses bombs and explosives as the primary weaponry. Many people know of its existence online, but just a few (including the unlucky fellows who will the game) know of the existence of Btooom in real life!

22-year-old Sakamoto Ryouta wakes up on a desolate island not knowing why he’s there in the first place. With a bag of supplies, some bombs, and a mysterious crystal on his hand, he realizes that he’s actually playing the game he’s very much addicted to in real life. Problem is - it’s real life! Even though he’s one of the best players of the game online, playing it in reality is different as it includes a lot of stress, strain, and danger. He’s practically a genius in Btooom but will he survive?

1. Deadman Wonderland

If bombs and explosives were the cause of the “BANG!” in Btooom, then in Deadman Wonderland - it’s BLOOD everywhere! Blood is the primary weapon in Deadman Wonderland. And as much as that sounds too fastidious, it surely isn’t less than bombs!

For one, Deadman Wonderland definitely doesn’t pale in comparison with Btooom. It’s also full of action and the scenes are actually gruesomely good! Second, blood as a weapon is quite pretty interesting as well. With the means of utilization as varied as can be, the various attacks could lead to massive awe! Lastly, Deadman Wonderland is a combination of action and horror. The setting is quite horrifying but at the same time dense with cutting-edge action and plot twists - so what more could you ask for?

With Igarashi Ganta, Shiro, and the rest of the Deadman Wonderland cast battling it out for survival, a whacked-out crazy wonderland of a show awaits!

2. Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)

Graced as one of the best psychological action thriller ever made, Mirai Nikki (Future Diary) is one heck of a show you should never EVER miss! I mean, SERIOUSLY, Mirai Nikki literally can choke you into submission and drill every piece of its marvel into your mind and heart. It’s full of seat-knocking action, psychological hijinks, unexpected drama, time-and-space-bending twists, and infinite thrills that would just utterly you make your jaw drop out of awe.

And just so you know, I don’t think even Btooom can outpace Mirai Nikki in its entirety. Btooom does have overwhelming potential (given that it’s still ongoing and all) but, if you’re looking for something much grander and a lot of notch higher (in my opinion), then Mirai Nikki is your show!

Sword Art Online (SAO)

3. Sword Art Online (SAO)

In this day and age, if you say that you’ve never heard of Sword Art Online, then I would be totally floored! FYI, Sword Art Online is so popular that it has become so mainstream that it’s even over-rated (as stated by many people).

Now, I’m bringing up SAO here because for obvious reasons...it’s well-versed and very much similar with the subject of this hub. SAO’s setting is in the virtual gaming world but the stakes are so serious and real that everything amounts to what’s actually in reality. When a player dies in-game, they die in real life!

In Btooom, the scenario from the online game is forced and implemented on an island in real life. And while SAO is more on the fantastical side, Btooom is on more on the realistic side.

4. Danganronpa - The Animation

Survival anime anyone? As if you haven’t drowned yet with stuff about survival anime, here’s another survival show that’ll tickle your wits and make you chuckle in madness. The show is...Danganronpa - The Animation!

Tame when it comes to action (actually, there’s really none) but surely - it’s something that will blow your mind! Danganronpa features a setting where the characters fight it out by using logic and thinking skills. Nonetheless, it’s still a survival show because characters in this show get seriously hurt and do die if they make the wrong choices and decisions.

So, with a mad school full of crazies and eerie cases, Danganronpa is your bet if you’re looking for something that’s part of the survival genre but more on mystery and logic.

5. No Game No Life

Okay, so you might be wondering why No Game No Life is here on this list, right? Well, to enlighten you, No Game No Life is apparently also a survival anime just like Btooom!

No blood, no killing, no crime - that sums up the world of Disboard of No Game No Life in its entirety. It’s like the opposite of what we’re trying to compare here right? But wait, there’s something about this show that it really warrants to be placed here on this list.

It’s really difficult to explain so just watch it and see for yourself! This show is so good it’ll totally knock your socks of your feet (that’s if you’re wearing socks right now). But seriously, see it and learn of its wonder yourself. It’s still about survival after all, and you might just like (and love) it far better than the others.

Psycho-Pass

6. Psycho-Pass

I know it’s quite obvious why this one’s on this list, but I’ll explain nonetheless. Aside from the fact that Psycho-Pass tackles human nature and behaviour in a dark and eerie way, it does so with a plot that’s full of shocks and some action to relay the message effectively. Then, just as I’ve said, it touches the depths of what being a human truly is. With standards and morals at the mercy and scrutiny of the technology known as Psycho-Pass, what’s deeply seated and hidden before is now fully exposed!

Now that’s just like Btooom right? Everyone’s struggling and uses any means necessary to survive. At some point, mere physical battles turn into battle of wits and emotions where the characters are affected in all aspects - physically, emotionally, psychologically, and sometimes even spiritually.

With all that said, I don’t think I can add more. It’s up to you now to discover the answers yourself!

Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

7. Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

As one of the ultimate shows about survival and action, Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) is a no-brainer for this list! C’mon, I think everyone here agrees that this is one of the best action Japanese Animation out there! Those grisly titans and the maneuver gears speak for themselves!

As for the comparison and similarity checking, I know you know already the basics! Shingeki no Kyojin is heavy on action as it is also heavy with some other genres. Then, the plot is also intense! Every movement is fluid and each transition is superb! Truly an astonishing spectacle to witness and behold!

Alas! I think I’ve run out of words. At least now, you know what the essence is and what I’m trying to deliver here. Shingeki no Kyojin is a must-watch and it’s on par, if not, way better than Btooom or anything you’ve seen so far.
