The Story: When a dimensional gate opened in the heart of Mikado City, creatures known as “neighbors” came flooding in, terrorizing and abducting the residents of the city. The neighbors were so powerful and technologically advanced that the city of Mikado was basically at the mercy of the ruthless invaders. Fortunately, a mysterious organization called “Border” came to the rescue of the city and repelled the invading neighbor forces. From that day on, Border settled-in to ensure that the city and its residents are safe from future neighbor attacks as well as train agents and advance technology to prepare for the worst-case-scenario of another large-scale neighbor invasion happening in the future.

The Similarity: What comes as a similarity with World Trigger and Kekkai Sensen is the fact that a breach manifests in the middle of a certain city and alternate dimension beings come pouring in. There’s no barrier in World Trigger but, the mere fact that the balance of both worlds is at stake is the whole definition of the likeness. Those aside, both possesses a fair amount of action as well as story-lines that’ll make you hold-on to until the end.

2. Durarara!!

The Story: At first glance, Ikebukuro may seem a lot like a very ordinary busy city but, deep behind the simple facade that it’s showcasing lies mysteries that far exceeds mere rumors and urban legends. Gangs, crazed people, brilliant schemers, students, and headless bike rider to top it all –Ikebukuro is rustling with elements that are actually interconnected and part of a grander plan. Much to the surprise and anticipation of Ryugamine Mikado, a new student in one of the schools of the city, Ikebukuro has a lot of crazy things to offer just as much as how extravagant his true nature is.

The Similarity: “What in the world is happening with these cities?” – that’s what you’ll probably be asking after seeing both anime shows. Mysterious events and supernatural phenomena are simultaneously happening that it’ll just make you wonder what’s going to happen next. Well, that’s Durarara and Kekkai Sensen for you, and that’s the fundamental commonality they both have.

3. Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End)

The Story: Due to a mysterious virus that’s been indiscriminately killing people of over the age of thirteen (13) and vicious creatures known as vampires taking advantage of the grim situation, humankind is essentially at loss and in despair. With the captive humans being treated as slaves and livestock to the vampires, the desolation exacerbates as the days go by. Years later, a group of children tries to escape from oppression of the vampires...only to suffer a great loss. Just one boy manages to escape; and on that very day of grief, the boy vows to put an end to all the vampires that exists once he gets stronger.

The Similarity: It’s demons for Kekkai Sensen while it’s vampires for Owari no Seraph. In either case, both just sound as bad; and believe me – trouble is always brewing with both of these alterworld entities. Besides that rudimentary reason, these two shows are of the same season and they both occupy a degree a likeness in terms of their intriguing story and the progress of their respective plots. Also, action and drama are evident in both!

4. Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)

The Story: Since the dawn of time, two worlds co-exist but isolated from one another. One is the world of humans, Assiah, and the other is the world of demons, Gehenna. Fundamentally, both worlds cannot touch nor have contact with one another but, the demons have found a way to breach the human world; and that is to possess humans. Satan, the king of Gehenna, is hell bent on conquering the human world but, he has a problem - he needs a strong vessel to possess! With his power and his wits, he spawns a child in the human world to stand as his vessel in the future. But, as things turned out, the child of Satan became an Exorcist -an adept who fights and drives away demons!

The Similarity: Demons are so IN when it comes to Japanese animation these days; and mind you – Ao no Exorcist and Kekkai Sensen are heavy with these entities and the whole genre in general! Hmmm…for these two, the similarity not just comes from the fact that demons are prominent, but also, to the fact that they share the same amount of genre mix, which includes action, comedy, and drama. Both are also fairly good and enjoyable to watch where one is actually a Shounen (AnE) while the other is a Seinen (KS). Shounen or Seinen, there’s not much of a difference in these shows though.

5. Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis (Rage of Bahamut)

The Story: In a mystical world where humans, demons, and gods all live together, conflict is a staple between the relationships of each race. But, unknown to all of them, there’ll come a day when they’ll all band together to defeat a common threat. With all their powers combined together, a powerful seal was forged to trap the destructive Bahamut. And thus, peace came flourishing upon the land. A thousand years later, a vicious plan to release Bahamut dreadfully comes to motion.

The Similarity: We were just talking about demons, but here again is another contender with demons at its essence! Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis has lots and lots of demons! And oh, it also has lots of gods! Its character designs (especially for the main characters) needs some getting-used-to, but the excitement and the fun are real! Also, it’s actually highly anticipating just like Kekkai Sensen that you won’t mind any other unusual elements at all. And that’s what ties both into the definition.

6. Noragami

The Story: In order to become regarded as successful and godly enough, the gods has to build-up reputation in the human world by any means necessary. One of them is Yato, and as things are looking for him, he’s currently a lowly god with no redeeming qualities. Until one day, he saves a girl named Hiyori from being run over by a vehicle, which causes her to gain the ability of unconsciously projecting her soul out of her body. And so after that, with Yato her only hope for returning back to normal, Hiyori teams-up with Yato and his Regalia, Yukine, in order to achieve what each of them wants.

The Similarity: In line with the supernatural genre, Noragami is a show that will never get left behind. It feels kinda like a slice-of-life with added action and a deep plot, but that’s what we’re experiencing with Kekkai Sensen as well! There’s the action too as well as the sparse interjection of comic relief so if like the other then you’ll definitely like this as well.

7. Mekakucity Actors

The Story: Amidst the heat of summer in a certain city, a group of kids with mysterious eye abilities ventures into the unknown to seek answers for their uncanny situation. Their group is known as the Mekakushi Dan (Blindfold Gang), and their mission is to get down to the bottom of the mysteries surrounding the city and themselves. Red eyes, unique abilities, the Heat Haze – who knows what sort of unbelievable things and events would happen in the sweltering heat of summer?!

The Similarity: I’ll guess what you’re thinking now (or seeing) – yes, it’s the eyes! If the main character of Kekkai Sensen has the all-seeing-eyes of god, then the cast of Mekakucity Actors has the mysterious red eyes of the heat haze with various powers and capabilities. These eyes are all the fuzz with these two anime shows, and it’s their mysteries that were trying to get-on-with on both! These two anime are “supernatural” as they are “mystery” with a lot more other aspects in common.
