1. Log Horizon

A fantasy world based on a massively popular game - check! An uber-cool, clever, or powerful main character - check! And a compelling story that’s full of interesting jinks and incredible scenes - Check! That’s three (3) checks for Log Horizon already and more and unquestionably on the way! And by the way, have you noticed what I did there? All the things I mentioned...are actually the exact same elements you’d find in Overlord. Yes, overlord! And that’s the reason why this show is on this list.

Log Horizon clearly impresses. It’s unlike any other show of the same theme and genre. It focuses more on strategy and battle of wits and talent rather than sheer strength and power. Also, its theme is on the more political/economical side rather than just on action and the usual elements you find in a shounen show. Given all those reasons, you should check this show out not just because it clings so close with Overlord but also, it’s truly impressive for an anime of its own calibre.

2. Sword Art Online

Here comes another obvious contender! With a gaming world bordering the domain of reality at a large extent, it’s no wonder Sword Art Online (SAO) was able to pull-off a breathtaking story that triumphs over a breakthrough! It’s awesome, it’s larger than life - not even the thousands of players trapped in Aincrad of the world of SAO can deny the overwhelming grandeur of this anime.

So why’s this title here? Hmhmhm...that should be obvious! Hailed as one of the most popular titles in its own theme and genre, SAO brandishes its swords in an action-packed and dramatic kind of fashion. That being said, this show should be in the must-watch shows of everyone’s list.

3. Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri

A dimensional gate opens up in Japan and all sorts of mystical creatures pour in to try to invade the surrounding cities – sounds really fantastical but dangerous, right? But well, it’s a good thing that present-day Earth is much more advanced than any medieval fantasy world there is. During the old times, they might have had numbers, but today – we have technology and GUNS! And that pretty much sums up Gate: Jietai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri as a whole.

In Overlord, our main character is transported to a medieval fantasy world where he is a powerful overlord. For Gate, our characters are sent to the invading world to what else…retaliate by invading as well! With those elements and themes in mind now, I’m sure it’s quite noticeable how both anime are very much alike and similar. For your information too, both of these shows came out in the same season of Summer 2015.

No Game No Life

4. No Game No Life

If it’s only fantasy anime or even gaming anime that were talking about, then we have clear, undeniable contender, that is – No Game No Life!

Set in a world that is rather existentially different from our own, two genius Hikikomori N.E.E.T. gamers named Shiro and Sora, or also known as “Blank” together, are asked to leave their boring world and move into the world of Disboard – a world where everything is decided and ruled by games!

Now, if I must say – No Game No Life is a show that’s actually incomparable and very majestic in all its entirety. But even though, it does share some unique characteristics with Overlord. Those include the “fantasy” and “gaming” aspects and a lot more! And so, I shall state that amongst all the titles in this list – I proudly say that No Game No Life is one of the most recommended here for you to spectate!

5. Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka

For starters, Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka is also known as “Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” Doesn’t sound like a serious anime right? But, it actually doesn’t disappoint in terms of plot and characterization! As a matter fact, it shows-off with a very fantastical and trendy theme!

This anime is set in a real world that matches the elements of an actual game. It has a dungeon, it has characters with specific job classes, it has characters that acts like they are straight-up NPCs, and more! It seems that it’s basically putting up all the elements you can find in an adventure game into a much more realistic light. And that’s what makes this show extra special. Also, you’d know from everything that I’ve just said that this show is clearly like Overlord in all those regards. Games and fantasies?! Bring it on!

6. Btooom!

Now going to a much grimmer theme and plot, we have the bomb-packed action anime – BTOOOM! Yes, it’s all bombs and explosions here. And it doesn’t even stop there!

Main character, Ryouta Sakamoto, is Btooom! It’s an online game where the main arsenal a player has is…what else…bombs…all sorts of bombs and explosives! At first, it was just a game he was extremely addicted to but, later on – it becomes his real-world nightmare! Along with a few others, he gets tossed into an isolated island where he gets to play his favorite game for in real life…much to his and everyone else’s horror!

So as I’ve said, Btooom doesn’t even happen in a fantasy world. It happens in the real world! That opens up a lot of serious implications concerning real life and real struggles. But, as it is still based-off on a game, it doesn’t really stray too far from Overlord. For as much as we know, fantasy worlds may even be more real than just mere products of fiction. So, if you like more action but less-to-no fantasy elements, Btooom is the right show for you!

Ixion Saga DT

7. Ixion Saga DT

Throwing off all the serious themes and aspects, we go to a show that’s very much like Overlord (with everything in it happening inside a game-fantasy world and all) but with a much lighter story and the much needed comic relief. I now present the anime – Ixion Saga DT!

Ixion Saga DT is surely set-up in a world the main character, Kon, plays in one of his games. It’s the world of Alma, the same world Kon traverses as a player. But now, with all mysterious things happening around spontaneously, he gets transported into the world he only knew as a game! and as an added bonus, he gets to travel with a crazy party with wacky members (him included).

Mind you people, this anime is bordering the domain of a comedy anime series. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a clear story thoug! Ixion Saga DT is quite good as it is funny! It’s highly enjoyable and very wacky that you wouldn’t curse it for its nonsensical existence.
