Amy Winehouse & Other Great Female British Artists

Updated on January 8, 2013

Amy Winehouse, was a woman with a soulful, captivating voice that would draw you in and make you close your eyes and rock, dare I say sway, side-to-side.

I cried the other day, yes, I literally cried, after watching the duet with Amy and legendary Tony Bennett. How could someone with such a precious voice be taken away from us so early in her career? It made me sad to think of her as this woman fighting internal demons and struggling so hard to be sober. (Yes, I said it, I cried.) That never happened to me before, so I questioned myself if it was me sinking into another episode of major depression or did I really, truly feel sad about her death. It was the latter.

So, this inspired me to write about her. Not that there aren't already millions of stories out there about her already (Google showed results for about 189,000,000 when I researched her on 9/21/2011) but that as a former singer myself (weddings and funerals) I needed to reach out to people and show just how talented this very loving and complex woman was.

She debuted in 2003 with her album "Frank" and gave the British music industry a kick in the you-know-what. Over the last few years, there have been some highly talented women coming from the UK and their music is all over the waves stateside.

Okay, first things first. You HAVE to watch this video. Appreciate how she sings and how it just comes right out of her spirit. It's amazing to watch; it comes so naturally to her like breathing or sleeping.

Body & Soul - Amy Winehouse and Tony Bennett

Now that you've watched the video and wiped away your tears. Wasn't that beautiful?

I don't want to get sucked up into all the stories about how she died and what she should have done. What does it matter? A human being is gone. A family will never be the same. A public is left wanting more, never to have their appetite curbed. It is tragic...for everyone.

So, I just want to say, Happy Birthday to Amy (September 14th). I wish she was here in person to celebrate. Please support the Amy Winehouse Foundation by purchasing her duet song with Tony Bennett. All proceeds go directly to The Amy Winehouse Foundation which was set up by her father to help young people in the UK or US who are in need due to illness or disability or addiction. It provides help and support for our young people, what more do you need to know?

      Hi there, DIYmommy!

Thank you so much for stopping by! I totally agree with you. So many great people are taken from us at a young age. I think about Amy Winehouse and Aaliyah all the time and wonder what could have been were they still here.

Amy's death was sad. Untimely. Tragic. It's always sad to see young lives go so prematurely in their lives. She really had so much to offer to the world in terms of her vocal prowess and reach. Thank you for the great hub about Amy Winehouse!

I know MT!! The video was actually what inspired me to write the hub. After I saw it, I just knew I had to pay some sort of tribute to her. It's so sad to see someone with such a beautiful talent get taken away from us so early in her life. Thanks for commenting!

I have always loved Amy Winehouse and I was devastated when I heard of her death. She was so talented and singing for her was just a part of her. The clip really choked me up. I think they filmed that too long ago. So sad and she will be missed. Addiction is such a killer. I have lost many to the disease of alcoholism.

See. such things are just spoiling the young generation. We all lost a great artist. Anyways, we should try that it'll not happen again. Nice hub!

Actually I think the coroner said it was alcohol poisoning

Drugs has spoiled the lives of many people. But I think Amy didn't died because of excessive drugs. Did she?? But I'm sure that drug played a major role in that. We should discourage and try to stop drug abuse. She was great.

Thanks so much for the comment! I think Amy Winehouse is one of the "greats" definitely! And it's true, the music coming out of the UK now (and other European countries) is phenomenal!!

Hi S>A>M great hub and great singers. Nice to see British artists getting the praise they deserve. Shame about AW.I am sure she will be missed the world over. It is so true that the Great's are often tormented by their demons and it is inevitable that this will happen.

      Vote up and awesome.

I agree with you - What does it matter how/why/when? A human being is gone and she will be missed. There is a saying: "A person is not always what he/she does." The 'real me' in our souls is most of the time, if not all the time lonely, afraid and vulnerable. Only to be consoled by love.

I think you're absolutely right when you said that there isn't a point in trying to argue what Amy could and should have done, just the fact that an artist left us is a great tragedy in itself.
