Bae Doo Na award winning actress and supermodel from South Korea that became a Hollywood Star

Updated on January 6, 2018

A first look at the beautiful Bae Doo Na

Who is Bae Doo Na?

Bae Doo Na (sometimes known as Bae DooNa) is an award winning actress and supermodel from South Korea. Usually, I write biographies about Japanese celebrities and movie stars but for now, South Korea will be the focus. The country that gave birth to beautiful actresses such as Kim Hye Soo, Jeon Do Yeon, and Hyori Lee has introduced us to this successful movie star that finally made it to Hollywood.

Bae Doo Na talks about about acting and making movies

"I never lived even once without having anything to do. The moment a film was presented to the press, I was almost always already shooting the next one ... I thought by myself: now my first cycle is really over. While I rest a little, I wanted to make a fresh new start."

Basic stats for Bae Doo Na

  • Her birth date is October 11, 1979.
  • She was born in Seoul, South Korea.
  • Her height is listed at 171 centimeters.
  • Her weight is listed at 49 kilograms.

Bae Doo Na did not initially want a career as an actress and here is why

Bae Doo Na was strongly influenced by her mother Kim Hwa-Young who is a famous stage actress herself. Bae would follow her around the theater and stage halls. It was during this period of time that she would learn the lines of dialogue. Contrary to what was believed, these experiences did not initially lead her towards a career as an actress. Bae Doo Na says that these experiences actually had the opposite effect because since she saw so many actors that worked with her mother, Bae thought that acting was a job that only people with talents that are extraordinary could do.

Bae Doo Na's modeling work and early acting career

In 1998, Bae Doo Na was a Hanyang University student when she was discovered by a model talent agency while she was walking in Seoul, South Korea. Then she became a fashion model for COOLDOG's catalog. In 1999, her acting career began and she made her debut in the KBS TV drama called School. In that same year, Bae Doo Na starred as Eun-suh in the Ring Virus which is a remake of the Japanese horror film called Ring. In the following year of 2000, Bae Doo Na was cast as Hyeong Nam in the movie Barking Dogs Never Bite. She was given the role because of her willingness to play that part without wearing makeup. This was something that other South Korean actresses refused to do. Sometimes you have to make self-sacrifices and do what is best for others and Bae Doo Na made a very courageous move. Bae Doo Na would follow up that role with two more successful films. These were Take Care of My Cat in 2001 and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance in 2002.

Bae Doo Na: 2003-2006

With all of her initial success, Bae Doo Na would encounter a less than stellar year in 2003. She saw that the films Tube and Spring Bears Love become less than a success at the box office. It was after this setback that she decided to take a break from acting. While on a hiatus from acting, Bae Doo Na spent much time as photographer and evidence of this can be seen in her official blog and photo book releases. Bae would make her return to acting in 2004, making her return by starring in a theater production of Sunday Seoul. The play's co-writer was Park-Chan Wook whom Doo Na had worked with before. In 2005, she appeared in the Japanese movie Linda Linda Linda. Bae Doo Na would make history in 2006 when she starred in The Host which to date is still the highest grossing movie in South Korean movie history.

Bae Doo Na: her Work in 2010

In 2010, Bae Doo Na received even further recognition when she starred in Air Doll, a film by the Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda. The film is about an inflatable sex doll that develops a soul and falls in love after that. Bae Doo Na would then star in a sports film called As One. The film is based on a true story that covers the world table tennis championship in Chiba, Japan in 1991. Chiba is the birthplace of former AKB48 idol singer Atsuko Maeda and gravure model Harumi Nemoto.

A North Korean and South Korean table tennis duo face difficulties, overcome them, and eventually beat the Chinese team.

Bae Doo Na Finally Makes it to Hollywood!

Bae Doo Na made her Hollywood debut in Cloud Atlas playing the role of Son-Mi 451. The movie is based on the novel by David Mitchell and it cost $150 million dollars to make. In 2014, the film Girl At My Door was selected as one of the films to be shown at Cannes, France. Bae Doo Na also revealed that she is dating her Cloud Atlas co-star Jim Sturgess. Doo Na said that he has been with her since she chose to appear in Girl At My Door. This puts to rest reports by the media that the two are just friends. It is now official that Doo Na and Sturgess are a couple. Note: in March 2015, Jim Sturgess and Bae Doo Na ended their relationship. In 2000, Bae Doo Na received awards for Best New Actress and Most Popular Actress. Bae Doo Na joins Hyori Lee as one other famous Korean celebrity to be born in 1979. In 2014, Bae Doo Na starred in the movie called A Girl at My Door in which she plays the role of a police officer who is trying to save a girl that she suspects has become a victim of domestic violence. The movie role was described by the actress as being fascinating and emotionally challenging. The movie was a success for international reasons because it premiered in what is called the Uncertain Regard section of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival in France. Bae Doo Na would win a Best Actress award or her role in the movie at the Asian Film Awards.
