Batman V Superman: A Review
I did it! I saw Batman V Superman! I'm going to be honest and say that I did read some reviews and looked at the rotten tomatoes score (29% at the time) but I told myself that I was not going to let those snobby critics ruin the movie I have been looking forward to for 2 years. Well sadly, the critics weren't wrong...
Ben Affleck is a good Batman. I think he will do a fine job carrying this character through the twenty million movies that DC has coming up. A performance in the movie that I surprisingly like was Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor Jr. He is the source of a lot of groaning for people but I actually liked his crazy, unstable version of the character. I will admit that I have never read a comic in my life so I only have a vague understanding of the character, but I thought he was interesting and kind of unsettling. The not so good characters I think came from Superman and Lois Lane. They both seem kind of like an afterthought and their character story really doesn't have much of a through-line. It kind of seemed like director Zack Snyder just really hated Superman as a kid. Like he wore a Superman costume to school once and got bullied and he swore from that day on that Superman would "RUE THE DAY!".
Plot. Plot. Plot. What plot? My main problem with this film is the lack of any kind of plot or motivation. Batman has a decent reason for disliking Superman, but Superman has very little reason to dislike Batman. Also, no spoilers, but the conflict resolve between Batman and Superman had me laughing in my seat and wondering which writer is getting fired for it. I guess in the end the movie is pretty to look at, but once you start dissecting it, the whole thing just starts to fall apart.
Who should see this movie? Someone with the ability to turn their brain off and just look at pretty pictures on a screen.
Who should skip this movie? Anyone who loves the traditional Batman and his values
