Best Anime Movies List

Updated on June 18, 2016

Want to watch a great anime movie?  This is my list of favourite anime movies that I recommend watching if you haven't already. Whether you choose English dub or Japanese with English subtitles is up to you.

Many films from Hayao Miyazaki are in my list, so many of which are classics.

First up on the list...

Spirited Away. The only anime (to my knowledge) to ever win an Oscar award. Can easily be enjoyed by people of all ages. About a girl who enters a magical world with her parents and must then rescue them from being stuck in pig form.

Steamboy Trailer

Steamboy. Steamboy cost 26 million dollars to produce over a period of 10 years. It remains the most expensive full length Japanese animation ever produced. It is a steam punk science fiction setting in the late 1800's. Ray Steam is a young inventer and son to the greatest scientist of the time. Ray receives a package from his grandfather of a 'Steam Ball' which his father and grand father invented. Ray must protect it from those who would use it as a weapon.

Steamboy has a great OST soundtrack which I still enjoy listening to

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

A great movie. When Makoto gains the ability to leap back in time, she uses it to her advantage, unlimited time to study for the exam, unlimited time at her favourite things, she soon realises that often when she changes things to her benefit someone else will end up suffering as a result. Time waits for no one, so watch this anime!

Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

1986 Miyazaki film well deserving in my top anime movie list. Plot: long ago people had the technology to build great flying machines and flying cities, most then were destroyed but a legend continues of Laputa still being out there lost in the clouds.

Some of my all time favourite pieces of music contained in this movie.

Howls Moving Castle

Sophie is 18 and works in a hat shop, she meets the wizard Howl, whose house is a giant 4 legged contraption that walks. The Witch of the Waste puts a curse on Sophie transforming her into an old lady because she is jealous of her being around Howl. She then shelters in Howl's castle while she tries to find a way to reverse the curse.

Princess Mononoke

Ashitaka becomes cursed when battling a boar demon to save his village. He must travel to the forests to find a cure, upoc arrival he finds himself in the midst of a battle between the forest spirits and the humans of a mining town who have been exploiting and killing the forest.

The anime Akira is set in 2030 Neo-Tokyo which is troubled by anti-government protests and gang violence. While riding his motorbike Tetsuo crashes into a strange blue skinned child, the incident awakens psychic powers in Tetsuo.

Summer Wars

Summer Wars is about a guy who is given a special job by the girl he likes to pretend to be her boyfriend while she attends the family reunion (though he doesn't know this until after his arrival)

A huge social network game called Oz which is used by everyone in the world becomes hacked. Every business and organisation also has their secure information inside. Information obtained in Oz enables the terrorist to wreak real world havoc. A great movie produced by the same people who made The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Give it a try!

Summar Wars is one of my favourite movies right now.   Check out its sound track OST on youtube

I know this article is almost two years old, but I would also recommend "Metropolis" and "Darkside Blues." And to Mr. Aposman, Arietta wasn't released when the article came out.

My only addition would be to add some Satoshi Kon to the list. Paprika, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers and Perfect Blue all qualify as some of the best anime movies. Subject matter is a little surreal, but sometimes the best films push boundaries while making you think. Some of my personal favorites can be found at
