Best Classic Hindi Movies To Watch

Although Bollywood might be thought of as colorful and brash dancing and celebrations, there are many classic Hindi storyline films from the 1950’s to the 1990’s are some of the best black and white and colored movies of classic Bollywood you can find. It’s part of an evolution of the culture of the genre.

Coolie (1983)

This Bollywood action comedy movie set around the lifestyle of a railway coolie, which is somebody at the bottom of the career ladder in the train station.The star has Amitabh Bachchan playing Iqbal Aslam Khan who is the local go to guy for handling all your baggage. Basically it is a love interest between two of the main characters. There was quite a bit of anticipation about this film before release, as there was a scene filmed that saw Bachchan have a close life and death accident on set, thanks to a mistimed jump.

Evening in Paris (1967)

An Evening in Paris is a delightful love story thriller that stars two Parisians from an Idian origin. They are both in love with each other until the nasty and evil (yeah you know the one) person called Jack shows up, and kidnap Roopa, the woman in the storyline. It is then up to Shyam to use his ingenuity and resources to rescue her among some hefty demands. The locations and sets in this film are breathtaking, taking place in the lovely city of Paris.

Kaala Patthar (1979)

A Film based on the very controversial Chasnala mining disaster, where 380 miners were killed by explosions and flooding inside the mine. The story centres around the relationship of a couple of the main characters. Vijay Pal Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) plays the role of a disgraced former Merchant Navy captain, becomes friends with an engineer named Ravi (Shashi Kapoor).

Love in Tokyo (1966)

Set in the obvious tokyo, this film takes in a great many of the well known landmarks, and most of it happens with a touch of flirting going on between the two main characters. The movie stars Tom who has moved to Tokyo, and is struggling with isolation until he meets the beautiful Saki, a free spirited Japanese lady, who introduces him to more of Tokyo. It has an up to date theme, considering this was made in the 60’s, it features the inclusion of social media avatars on a network.

Qurbani (1980)

Starring Vinod Khanna, Feroz Khan, and Zeenat Aman, this Hindi Action movie is a classic out of the VHS tape (look them up if you don’t know). Sheela plays a beautiful disco club dancer, and singer, while Rajesh who was once a motorcyclist stuntman, and has since turned to a life of crime. Will the relationship of the two blossom, even through hard times may be coming, or will they split? You’ll have to enjoy the movie to find out.


Sholay (1975)

Written by Salim-Javed, directed by Ramesh Sippy, this action packed feature film is about two criminals that are hired by a retired police officer to apprehend the capture of the ruthless criminal Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). Sholay wasn’t widely received by box office critics, yet thanks to its, also all star cast with 6 of the countries top actors at the time. It's also in part a living love story, and remains to this day the highest grossing Indian film of all time, surprising but true. It has even been released in recent years in 3D, to enjoy too.

Tezaab (1988)

Tezaab literary means acid, and this movie will have you tripping along the way, as a violent love story, that has crazy skinheads with large metal sledge hammers, motorcycle chases, and explosions. This all ensured the film ran for more than 50 weeks in the cinema, becoming what is known as a golden jubilee, as well as being the highest blockbuster from Bollywood.

Zanjeer (1973)

This is an action packed Hindi film with love, terrific fight scenes, and a great story line. It’s all about a tough yet honest current police officer, who starts to class with a local crime boss. It takes time to uncover a dark secret between the two, that you will have to watch to find out. I’m not going to spoil the story for you.
