Best Comedy Movies to Watch on a Rainy Day

Updated on November 3, 2013

Are you sick or rained in? Need a great comedy to lift your spirits? Look no further. Below is a list with trailers included, so you can preview what you are about to watch right here.

There are many elements to a great comedy. You need a clever script, an engaging and talented cast, a unique point of view, and overall, an ironic plot. The following list is short, but I'm sure you will find a great movie you haven't seen or would like to see again.

I have included a rating system that indicates the movie rating, my age limit suggestions, and quality of script, editing, acting and story. I hope you enjoy watching and reading about some of my favorite comedies. These films are guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.

If you have any favorites you would like to add, leave them in the comments section.

Our Idiot Brother

This film is one of the most entertaining comedies I have seen in a while. The absolutely incredible cast stars Paul Rudd (I Love You, Man; Dinner for Schmucks) alongside Rashida Jones (The Office; Parks and Recreation), Zooey Deschanel (New Girl; Yes Man), Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation; Step Brothers), and so many others. The film follows a hippie, stoner guy named Ned (Rudd) that was just released from jail for giving a depressed cop marijuana. Throughout the film, he lives in each of his sisters' homes and exposes some of their secrets.

The film is very well-done and I would say that the acting was definitely the best element. The writing was spectacular and intelligent compared to the stupidity of Rudd's character. As Ned is looked down on for his lack of common sense, the viewer realizes that he, although not the smartest, may be the most honest and good-hearted person in the family.

I really enjoyed watching the film and laughing during each scene and I hope you enjoy it too.

The Other Guys

I guarantee you will laugh within the first ten minutes of watching this film. If you haven't seen it, it is a spoof on cop movies starring the handsome Mark Wahlberg (The Departed; The Fighter) and hilarious Will Ferrel (Anchorman; Step Brothers). They play two low-ranking cops living in the shadows of two super-cops (played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson). This film is jam-packed with stars including Eva Mendes, who does a spectacular job.

The film is like any other Will Ferrel movie; you will be laughing throughout the film. But the spotlight in this film, unlike some of the others starring Ferrel, is stolen by Wahlberg--at least for me. His character is quiet, reserved, but tough. He ends up being one of the funniest characters due to his reluctance and strange facial expressions. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Cedar Rapids Trailer

Cedar Rapids

Now, I came into this movie when I was sick in bed and had nothing else to watch. I put it on, expecting it to put me asleep, but to my surprise, this film was extremely entertaining and funny. Ed Helms (The Office; The Hangover) plays an insurance salesmen attending a conference that his late co-worker used to attend. He is told to stay away from one man in particular--a fat, party animal played by John C. Reily (Walk Hard; Step Brothers).

If that's not enough to get you interested, the film is as funny as it is dramatic. I would compare the strange ambiance of this film to that of Juno--a hilarious, but sometimes obscure film that makes you reflect on the many elements it has to offer. It's not your classic everything-works-out-in-the-end movie, but is still satisfying to watch as some things are resolved. I hope you enjoy it.

Office Space Trailer

Office Space

If you haven't seen this film, I don't know where you have been. Office Space has become a cult classic, yet, I find it on very few favorite movies lists. The film is about a guy who is tired of the daily routine his life has become. Everyday, he wakes up and drives to work in traffic, gets yelled at by his boss for meaningless paperwork, drives home and plops himself on the couch just to get ignored by his cheating girlfriend.

Written my Mike Judge, this film is a classic comedy filled with smart jokes and relatable story lines. He names one of his main characters Michael Bolton, has a Dilbert-like character who obsesses over a stapler, and casts Jennifer Aniston as a grumpy waitress. This film is a great film for families with older children and also for couples that have a similar routine to the main characters. This is a film you can watch over and over again. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Johnny Dangerously

This is my father's favorite film because of the intelligent humor and extremely creative plot line. This 1984 film is not a very popular one although it remains one of my favorites because of its timeless humor. Set in the 1930s, this film is about a man who struggles to assist his mother with her medical bills, so he has to turn into a criminal just to afford them. He becomes a mob boss.

The star of this film is played by a young Michael Keaten, who is extremely funny and eye-catching in this film. You will be laughing during the opening credits and probably won't stop until the end.

This creative, unique film-style is the work of director Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High). She uses different styles of cinematography to make this film a cult-classic and ultimate favorite of many.

Fargo Trailer

Classic: Fargo

This film is the masterpiece of the Cohen Brothers and because of that, I'm sure you've seen it. If not, you have been missing out on one of the most interesting, entertaining, and unique films of our time. The film is about a crime in Fargo, Minnesota (where everyone has an accent that you won't stop imitating for weeks). The film stars the incredible William H. Macy, Frances McDormand and Steve Buscemi.

McDormand plays a pregnant cop that pushes herself to the limit trying to defend the innocent. Macy is just the most exciting person to see in this role. He plays Jerry Lundergard, a shy used-car salesman that gets himself into trouble with Buscemi's character, a criminal that makes all of the wrong choices. I know you will love this clever, witty and just genius film. So, if you haven't seen this classic, I suggest you pick up a copy as soon as you can.
