The Best Elvis Presley Movies

Updated on August 17, 2014

The Best Elvis Presley Movies

All of Elvis Presley's movies were considered financially successful. He was at one time one of Hollywood's top box office draws and one of the highest-paid actors. "Jailhouse Rock" (1957) and "King Creole" (1958) are his two most critically acclaimed movies and are now classics of that time. I've added Viva Las Vegas (1963) to this list. However, all of his movies remain popular to this day.

Jailhouse Rock (1957)

An MGM picture.

Jailhouse Rock was Elvis Presley’s third movie and starred Elvis, Judy Tyler, Mickey Shaughnessy, Vaughn Taylor and Jennifer Holden. It was released in 1957 and features Elvis as the man who saves a woman from an assault but winds up killing his opponent and is sent to jail for manslaughter. He learns how to play guitar while in jail and becomes a singing star when he gets out of jail. However, his ego winds up getting him in trouble with his ex-cellmate and with his girlfriend.

Jailhouse Rock features lots of music including Jailhouse Rock, Treat Me Nice, Baby I Don’t Care and Don’t Leave Me Now. The title song was done as a large musical number that Elvis choreographed.

King Creole (1958)

King Creole starred Elvis Presley, Carolyn Jones, Walter Matthau, Dolores Hart and Dean Jagger and was Elvis’ fourth movie. He played a teenager who was trying to graduate from high school and who was, at the same time, working in a not-very-nice club in order to support his family. He is a troubled youth with a temper and with bad feelings about his father. His singing ability provides the opportunity to pull himself up. However, he becomes involved with a gangster who threatens to ruin his future success as a singer and to mess with his family.

Presley was young enough to carry off the role of a teenager and is considered to have done a good job of portraying a young man who feels both rage at and a yearning to improve his life.

Viva Las Vegas (1963)

Fans of Elvis love Viva Las Vegas, a movie in which Elvis plays a character named Lucky Jackson who is a race car driver and who goes to Las Vegas for a Grand Prix race. He needs work done on his car so he takes a waiter’s job in a casino and is soon charming the ladies. The chemistry between Ann-Margret and Elvis Presley is considred top-notch and given credit for making this movie fun.

The music in Viva Las Vegas includes Ray Charles’s “What’d I Say” and “The Yellow Rose of Texas.” It contains great musical numbers, race cars and lots of Las Vegas!

Thanks for your visit, Rachel. Elvis was one of the first musicians I listened too though I was listening a bit after his prime.

There's no denying it, Elvis had one of the best voices of all time. I loved listening to him sing. My favorite movie was Blue Hawaii. Thanks for such an interesting hub. Voted up.

Blessings to you. Thanks also for following me.

Hi, Ron - I definitely feel that Elvis movies are different somehow from ordinary movies so I can understand people not being drawn to them unless they are interested in seeing how Elvis translated onto the big screen.

I have to say I've never actually watched an Elvis Presley movie. There is, however, one scene I remember and like - the Jailhouse Rock production in that movie. As for the rest, I've never felt drawn to any of Elvis's movies. Forgive me!

I think everyone likes some of Elvis' music, he was a class act, but I have never been so sure about his films.

Guess I haven't seen as many of Elvis's movies as I thought. How fun to watch these clips - Elvis was adorable and it's always good to see him (and listen to him) again.

Just thought I would mention that TV Guide Magazine has a Remembering Elvis magazine out on the newstands right now. So, if anyone is an Elvis fan and isn't aware of that... now you are. :) It has nice color and black and white photos, information about some of his films, and other stuff, too. A bit of trivia from the magazine... Judy Tyler who worked with Elvis in Jailhouse Rock, died in a car accident shortly after filming was completed. Elvis was never able to watch that movie ever again because of that.

Thanks, Ibidii - My first record (not children's music) was an Elvis Presley album. We listened to it so many times....

Have been a fan of Elvis since 1957 when I saw him on TV, Mom was a fan too! My daughter liked Elvis when she was a tween. I am not sure if she still likes him. She had a Elvis doll with her Barbies. Great movie review!

Looking at your list I've probably seen all or most of his films. Can't say I like all of them or all his music, but I do have my favorites. That's normal I think with any actor/musician.
