Classic Hip Hop Groups

1. Outkast: This band transcended the rap game with a mix of guitars, horns and other instruments. Andre 3000 is a wild entertainer while Big Boi is the more laid back of the two. Their hip hop music is unlike any other and their music is played on Pop and rock stations as well as hip hop stations. My favorite song by OutKast is: Player's Ball. Another popular song is Hey Ya! Their songs are usually a more faster paced song.

2. N.W.A.: Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Easy E and Yella made up this gangsta rap group. Along with the Geto Boys and 2 Live Crew, N.W.A. is the reason that Parental Advisory Stickers are placed on the covers of music CD'S, even to this day. They had hard drum beats and even harder lyrics usually about street life. Their were songs that referenced black on cop violence. My favorite song by N.W.A. is: Strait Outta Compton. Now, there is a movie that has been released at the movie theater called, Strait Outta Compton. It did very well at the box office.

3. Geto Boys: This group came out of the Fifth Ward in Houston, Texas and the music describes the hood in vivid detail. Their is a lot of details too. Street life is hard and this is a way of expressing yourself as well as letting off some steam at the same time. Their beats are very hard and usually slow but, right on point. Scarface is the leader of the band with Willie D and Bushwick Bill on the mic as well. My favorite song by the Geto Boys is: Minds Playin' Tricks on Me.

4. Run DMC: This band were the true pioneers in the rap industry and they were the first rap artists to team up with a rock band, Aerosmith. Their music featured a live band which made their music sound one of a kind for their time. My favorite song by RUN DMC is: Down with The King. They are a very positive force in rap and they performed music that had meaning to it. Run DMC sand a duet with Aerosmith, Walk This Way.

5. Beastie Boys: They started out as a hard core punk rock band but, these three pale faces gave rap a try and mastered it quickly. They became famous with their album, Licensed to Ill and in particular their songs, Brass Monkey and Paul Revere. My personal favorite song by The Beastie Boys is: No Sleep Till Brooklyn.

6. Naughty By Nature: Treach and Rock came out with hard core street rap but, also they made pop songs with a chorus to appeal to the masses and it worked and in particular, on songs like" You Down With OPP." Queen Latifah discovered NBN and put them on the map. My favorite song by Naughty by Nature was dedicated to Tupac and it was called, "Mourn You Till I Join You."

7. Three Six Mafia: They came out of Memphis, Tennessee in 1991 and they always have catchy choruses with their music and club dance songs as well. They won an academy award for the song, It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp, and they perform in concerts on a regular basis. Known for using a chopped and screwed style in many of their songs. My favorite song by Triple Six is: Rainbow Colors, featuring Lil Flip.

8. Underground Kings: Bun B and Pimp C formed the group in Texas in 1987 and they stayed together until the death of Pimp C in 2007. They are a controversial band with somewhat rough lyrics but they also have dance music to bounce your head to. My favorite song by UGK is: Big Pimpin' featuring Jay Z.

9. Wu Tang Clan: This New York rap group consisted of five of the craziest characters you will ever see in hip hop. They started out in 1992 and they have found a lot of success as a group and with solo albums. My favorite song by Wu Tang came off of their first album and it was called: C.R.E.A.M.

10. Eightball and MJG: This rap duo began in Memphis, Tennessee in 1989 and they have more club dance mixes than any group on this list. Diddy now produces all of their music and they have a great sound and the flow is on point especially from the Fat Mack. My favorite 8 ball and MJG song is: It's Like Candy.

Geto Boys

Scarface

Scarface was the leader of the Geto Boys and he had an even more successful solo career. Their most famous song as a group was My Minds Playin Tricks on Me.

Scarface was on MTV Cribs and he had a huge apartment complex that was gutted out and made to his home. His home was in the projects in Texas but the inside is as awesome as any home you'll ever see.
