Best Kids Movies 2012

Updated on January 20, 2015

The Best Kids Movies 2012

Here's a list of some of the top 10 kids movies 2012. A number of these movies are animated movies so are also fun for adults to watch with their kids.

In general, if the film is of an animated nature then it will be suitable for all audiences, including very young kids. If it is an actual movie with actors portraying a role, then generally this is targetted towards an older audience. There are of course exceptions.

This best kids movies 2012 list will keep you and your kids busy over the holiday season and will make great gifts for the kids.

The Lorax

Release Date: 2nd March 2012

Genre: Animation/Fantasy/Comedy

Directed By: Chris Renauld and Kyle Balda

Starring: Zac Efron, Danny DeVito and Taylor Swift

Synopsis: A 12 year old boy has a crush on the girl next door and tries to find ways to talk to her. Once he does he finds out there is something she has always wanted and he sets out on a mission to get it for her.

While off on his adventure he meets a grumpy, but cute creature called The Lorax, played by Danny DeVito. The Lorax is trying to protect his world and ends up having an adventure with the young boy.

Since The Lorax is an adaptation of a Dr Seuss novel, expect the unexpected and a fantasy land with many outlandish features, but with a lot of beauty at the same time.

Suitable For: Suitable for all ages, as it's an adaptation of a childrens book. Also it's animated and has moments of humour for both adults and children of all ages. If you liked Monsters Inc then it's likely you and your kid's will like The Lorax.

Take a look at the trailer below for a sneak peek at the fantasy world of The Lorax.

If you looking for new animated movies, then please check out the animated movies 2013 list.

The Lorax Trailer

John Carter

Release Date: 9th March 2012

Genre: Sci-fi/Action/Adventure

Directed By: Andrew Stanton

Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem DaFoe and Samantha Morton

Synopsis: John Carter, a Civil War vet, finds himself stranded on Mars, which is different from the Mars we know. This Mars is inhabited by tall barbaric aliens that take John Carter captive. John fights against different aliens in an arena and wins due to the differences in gravity. Since the gravity on Mars is less he seems to have super powers as he is used to Earth's gravity, so can jump higher and move faster than the native Mars species.

Things change when John Carter comes face to face with the Princess. John falls in love with the Princess and starts a crusade to save her.

John Carter is an adaptation of the John Carter of Mars book series, written by author Edgar Rice Burroughs, who also wrote Tarzan.

Suitable For: John Carter is more suitable for older kids as it has a more intircate storyline. There will be some violence as it revolves around a gladatorial like arena at times. In many ways it actually reminds me of the original Star Wars movies.

It will probably have more appeal for teenage boys than for girls. It could also be enjoyable for many adults who like epic like stories, or have followed the novels.

Check out the trailer below, which has a lot of scenes that look like they are direct from Star Wars.

John Carter Trailer

Pirates - Band of Misfits

This is a comedy of errors, but by the end you grow to love the characters and really feel for them. Your kid's will be cheering on this pirate and hoping he finds a way to become Pirate of the Year in Pirates - Band of Misfits!

Suitable For: This movies is suited to all ages and genders. If you liked Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit then you'll love The Pirates as it's by the same people. It's almost a cartoon spoof of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Sit back and enjoy some comedy moments in this trailer.

The Pirates - Band of Misfits Trailer

The Avengers

Release Date: 4th May 2012

Genre: Action/Superhero

Directed By: Joss Whedon

Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L Jackson and Chris Evans

Synopsis: Another Marvel comic adaptation where a group of Superheroes must work together to protect the earth from some badass aliens. Of course, each Superhero has their own individual power and not all of them are keen to work together. Watch as Ironman, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor and a few other superheroes are brought together to help Earth in it's time of need.

There are moments of comedy, mostly provided by Robert Downney Jr, and there's a lot of action.

Suitable For: More suited towards fans of comics and Superhero films. If you enjoyed the Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk or Iron Man then it's highly likely you'll enjoy The Avengers. And for the guys, there's some great eye candy in the form of Scarlett Johansson, in the skin tight leather of course. For the ladies there's Captain America. Of course, the kids will no doubt love all the costumes.

Check out the trailer below and see if you agree.

The Avengers Trailer

Snow White and The Huntsman

Release Date: 1st of June 2012

Genre: Adventure/Action/Drama

Directed By: Rupert Sanders

Starring: Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth

Synopsis: An adaptation of the classic tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. This adaptation focuses on Snow White and the Huntsman that the Evil Queen sends to kill her. The Evil Queen wants Snow White's heart as the magic mirror tells her that if she eats Snow White's heart she will live forever.

In this twisted tale, the Huntsman changes his mind and instead of killing Snow White, he decides to protect her. Snow White becomes a Warrior Princess and they go on a quest to kill the Evil Queen.

If this sounds familiar then you may be remembering the recent TV show called Once Upon a Time, where they did the same kind of thing.

Suitable For: There are a few scenes which are dark and perhaps a little scary but in the main it should be suitable for most audiences, with parental guidance for younger views.

Should also be a hit with fans of Kristen Stewart, as she plays Snow White and fans of Charlize Theron, the Evil Queen.

See both actors in action in the following trailer.

Snow White and The Huntsman Trailer

Madagasgar 3

Release Date: 8th June 2012

Genre: Animation/Action/Comedy

Directed By: Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath

Starring: Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sasha Bowen Cohen, David Schwimmer and Ben Stiller

Synopsis: The usual cast of Madagasgar return in the 3rd installment of the story.

This time Alex the Lion, Gloria the Hippo, Melman the Giraffe, Marty the Zebra are trying to get home to New York City. The only problem is they are on the most wanted list and have to make their way from Monte Carlo, while trying to avoid the Authorities. Of course the Lemar is back too and causing all kinds of bother along with the Penguins!

In order to get back to New York, they decide to join a circus and travel across Europe, while trying to keep their heads down. Well some of them try to do that, at least. Marty the Zebra has other plans!!

Suitable For: It's an Dreamworks Production so adults and children should enjoy this film as it's a comedy and has lots of fun for the whole family. If you and your kids enjoyed the previous Madagasgar films or Ice Age, then this will be right up your alley.

Watch the trailer below to see some of the antics these former zoo animals get up to while travelling around Europe!

Madagasgar 3 Trailer

Jack the Giant Killer

Release Date: 15th June 2012

Genre: Action/Adventure/Fantasy

Directed By: Bryan Singer

Starring: Stanley Tucci, Nicolas Hoult and Ewan McGregor

Synopsis: Watch the latest adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk. The story follows the traditional lines of Jack who accidentally grows a Giant Beanstalk but this is where the story differs. This time the house was taken up into the sky when the Beanstalk grew. Somehow the Princess was in the house and is now at the top of the Beanstalk, where she has been taken captive by a Giant. Jack must rescue the Princess and defeat the Giant.

Suitable For: A more modern day take on a classic fairytale. Young kids may find parts scary with the Giant and the Princess being held captive.

Jack The Giant Killer Trailer

Brave

Release Date: 22nd June 2012

Genre: Animation/Action/Adventure

Directed By: Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman

Starring: Emma Thompson, Kelly McDonald, Robbie Coltrane, Julie Walters and Billy Connolly

Synopsis: Brave is an animated film between Disney and Pixar, set in the Scottish Highlands. Merida is a Scottish princess and refuses to play the traditional role of a princess. She wants adventure and loves archery and adventure.

Merida's nature leads her to make a reckless choice which has disastrous consequences. She must decide how much her freedom is worth and must take steps to fix things before it's too late. If Merida has any chance of breaking the curse she must be Brave and use her archery skills when needed.

Brave was biggest grossing animation movie of 2012. It is based in Scotland, hence the large number of British actors.

Suitable For: This movie reminds me of a number of other movies such as The Little Mermaid, she also didn't want to be just a princess. Ariel wanted to be human. It reminds me of The Lion King as Simba wanted to have his fun and not be restricted by his parents or his "nanny bird". However, these were also great Disney films and may explain why Brave was also such a great hit!

This film is really fun movie perfect for the whole family and is suitable for all ages.

Get a glimpse of how Brave Princess Merida is in the Brave trailer below.

Brave Trailer

The Amazing Spiderman

Release Date: 3rd July 2012

Genre: Adventure/Superhero/Action

Directed By: Mark Webb

Starring: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and Stan Lee

Synopsis: I hear a lot of you groaning thinking, "Oh no not another Spider Man Movie." Sorry folks but it is yet another one.

This version seems to cast a relative unknown in the role of Spider Man while you will probably be more familiar with his Aunt and Uncle, played by Sally Field and Martin Sheen.

It follows the usual storyline, Peter Parker's parents leave him to be raised by his Aunt and Uncle. He somehow gets bit by a spider and develops superpowers and becomes Spider Man. In this version, it looks like it may delve a little more into what happened to his parents and how that has effected his life. Guess you'll just have to watch it to see.

Suitable For: Kids love films that involve superheroes and are adapted from comics. Although you may have seen Spider Man countless times over the years, it's very likely some of your kids have never seen it.

Ice Age 3

Release Date: 13th July 2012

Genre: Animation/Adventure/Comedy

Directed By: Steve Martino and Mark Thurmeier

Starring: Ray Romano, Alan Tudyk, Jon Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Peter Dinklage, Jennifer Lopez and Sean William Scott

Synopsis: The usual suspects, Manny the Mammoth, Diego the Sabre Tooth Tiger and Sid the Sloth embark on another adventure when the continent is set adrift. The drift in the film is caused by the crazy squirell chasing his acorn again!!

The gang need a ship to travel between the continents and use an iceberg. On their adventure they meet new and wonderful characters such as pirates and sea creatures, before they embark on a continent.

Suitable For: This much anticipated 4th installment of Ice Age was a hit across all age groups again.

These funny creatures are hilarious at times, while actually telling a story.

Young kids will enjoy the action and some of the gags, while there will be some adult humour in there for parents too. This is one not to be missed!!

This has to be my favorite kids movie of 2012 and already have the DVD.

Ice Age 4 Trailer

Dorothy of Oz

Release Date: Now moved to 2013

Genre: Animation/Fantasy/Musical

Directed By: Will Finn and Dan St. Pierre

Starring: Lea Michelle, Patrick Stewart, Hugh Dancy, Dan Akroyd, Martin Short, Kelsey Grammar and James Belushi

Synopsis: With this star studded cast it's not hard to see why this is on the list of best new kids movies of 2012.

The movie starts with Dorothy deciding to return to the land of Oz to help her friends once again. Expect a musical journey and adventure as Dorothy travels through Oz.

Suitable For: All ages and genders.

In the video below you can watch the trailer for the next installment of Oz.

More New Kids Movies 2012

There were a large number of kids movies released in 2012. Also remember most films are shown in 3D now. Above are listed ten of the best kids movies 2012. Below is a short list of some of the other contenders.

Step Up 4 - Due to be air in cinema's from July 27th 2012. What kids doesn't like a good dance movie where they battle to see who has the best moves.Expect some of the same as the previous Step Up movies, just with a different couple finding romance.

Hotel Transylvania - Airing in cinema's 21st September 2012. Expect this animated. fantasy, drama to have you giggling away to yourself, especially since it features the voices of Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi, Andy Samberg and Cee-Lo Green.

This movie is about Dracula who runs a high end resort, but not on the human world. That doesn't stop a human boy from finding the resort and falling for Dracula's little girl.

Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 - 16th November 2012. Had to add this as it's such a popular film, especially amongst teenage girls. This will not be suitable for young kids as it's highly likely to be at least PG-13. However, if your child has seen the other films you can bet they are gonna annoy the hell outta you to see the last installment of Bella and Edward.

Watch as Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart turn vampire convention on it's head and have a child. Confusion breaks out where the Volturi believe they have "made" a vampire child by biting a child, which is forbidden. The Volturi are forced to act against the Vampire Coven.

Rise of the Guardians - 21st November 2012. Looks to be a Japanese anime style of movie. It looks like lots of fictional characters such as The Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, Jack Frost and the Sandman have to come together to ward off the Bogeyman. With a star studded cast including Jude Law, Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin and Isla Fisher, it will be interesting to see how this film fairs in 2012.

Let us know what you think of these films. Which movie do you think will be the best 2012 kids movie?

Which of these movies will be the best new kids movie 2012?

I think that the best movie which is enjoyed the most by the kids during the year 2012 is the Madagascar 3. I also enjoyed myself a lot to watch this movie and must say that it was the best kids movie I have seen ever.

I don't know if I am still classified as kid (Maybe) but, I think I'll go with Avengers and Brave. Anyway, they are all great its just that, on Avenger entertainment is something I achieved while watching it. Then, on Brave, which very very good for children to watch because its rich moral lesson.

I've seen Snow White and the Hunsman... I was kinda dissapointed and bored. I usually find the moveis i'm looking SO forward to end up boring and the moveis i think will suck turn out good. The movie Brave looks interresing and i can understand the accents (Im awesome at Accents). I love Lea Michealle and im a total GLEEK so Dorathy looks OK. Ice Age 2 looks funny "when you drink water through your trunk does it taste like boogers!" Diago is definately my fave character on Ice Age.

No way, your all crazy. Pixar owns this genre, and they are notorious for making their movies look odd and crazy in the previews, and people tend to get turned off, but as soon as it rolls it will be the best kids movie of the year. Take for example, well.......every single movie they've made. The others will be great, and I will take my kids but don't be fooled, Pixar will walk with best kids movie of 2012......AGAIN!

divadanni about 50% of these movies are sequels, but generally the sequels I have chosen are supposed to be really good and I can't wait to see some of them myself.

I am really looking forward to the new Madagasgar film and the new Ice Age movie. I love those films. In terms of the new movies, I really enjoyed the Lorax and I think Brave will be amazing. But that could be my bias showing as I am Scottish!

Some of these look great. I occasionally take my brothers children to the cinema, so it's good to know some of what they have to look forward to in 2012.
