Updated on January 20, 2015

The Best Kids Movies 2012

Here's a list of some of the top 10 kids movies 2012. A number of these movies are animated movies so are also fun for adults to watch with their kids.

In general, if the film is of an animated nature then it will be suitable for all audiences, including very young kids. If it is an actual movie with actors portraying a role, then generally this is targetted towards an older audience. There are of course exceptions.

This best kids movies 2012 list will keep you and your kids busy over the holiday season and will make great gifts for the kids.

The Lorax

Release Date: 2nd March 2012

Genre: Animation/Fantasy/Comedy

Directed By: Chris Renauld and Kyle Balda

Starring: Zac Efron, Danny DeVito and Taylor Swift

Synopsis: A 12 year old boy has a crush on the girl next door and tries to find ways to talk to her. Once he does he finds out there is something she has always wanted and he sets out on a mission to get it for her.

While off on his adventure he meets a grumpy, but cute creature called The Lorax, played by Danny DeVito. The Lorax is trying to protect his world and ends up having an adventure with the young boy.

Since The Lorax is an adaptation of a Dr Seuss novel, expect the unexpected and a fantasy land with many outlandish features, but with a lot of beauty at the same time.

Suitable For: Suitable for all ages, as it's an adaptation of a childrens book. Also it's animated and has moments of humour for both adults and children of all ages. If you liked Monsters Inc then it's likely you and your kid's will like The Lorax.

Take a look at the trailer below for a sneak peek at the fantasy world of The Lorax.

John Carter

Release Date: 9th March 2012

Genre: Sci-fi/Action/Adventure

Directed By: Andrew Stanton

Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem DaFoe and Samantha Morton

Synopsis: John Carter, a Civil War vet, finds himself stranded on Mars, which is different from the Mars we know. This Mars is inhabited by tall barbaric aliens that take John Carter captive. John fights against different aliens in an arena and wins due to the differences in gravity. Since the gravity on Mars is less he seems to have super powers as he is used to Earth's gravity, so can jump higher and move faster than the native Mars species.

Things change when John Carter comes face to face with the Princess. John falls in love with the Princess and starts a crusade to save her.

John Carter is an adaptation of the John Carter of Mars book series, written by author Edgar Rice Burroughs, who also wrote Tarzan.

Suitable For: John Carter is more suitable for older kids as it has a more intircate storyline. There will be some violence as it revolves around a gladatorial like arena at times. In many ways it actually reminds me of the original Star Wars movies.

It will probably have more appeal for teenage boys than for girls. It could also be enjoyable for many adults who like epic like stories, or have followed the novels.

Check out the trailer below, which has a lot of scenes that look like they are direct from Star Wars.

The Evil Queen wants Snow White's heart as the magic mirror tells her that if she eats Snow White's heart she will live forever.

In this twisted tale, the Huntsman changes his mind and instead of killing Snow White, he decides to protect her. Snow White becomes a Warrior Princess and they go on a quest to kill the Evil Queen.

If this sounds familiar then you may be remembering the recent TV show called Once Upon a Time, where they did the same kind of thing.

Suitable For: There are a few scenes which are dark and perhaps a little scary but in the main it should be suitable for most audiences, with parental guidance for younger views.

Should also be a hit with fans of Kristen Stewart, as she plays Snow White and fans of Charlize Theron, the Evil Queen.

See both actors in action in the following trailer.

Jack The Giant Killer Trailer

Brave

Release Date: 22nd June 2012

Genre: Animation/Action/Adventure

Directed By: Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman

Starring: Emma Thompson, Kelly McDonald, Robbie Coltrane, Julie Walters and Billy Connolly

Synopsis: Brave is an animated film between Disney and Pixar, set in the Scottish Highlands. Merida is a Scottish princess and refuses to play the traditional role of a princess. She wants adventure and loves archery and adventure.

Merida's nature leads her to make a reckless choice which has disastrous consequences. She must decide how much her freedom is worth and must take steps to fix things before it's too late. If Merida has any chance of breaking the curse she must be Brave and use her archery skills when needed.

Brave was biggest grossing animation movie of 2012. It is based in Scotland, hence the large number of British actors.

Suitable For: This movie reminds me of a number of other movies such as The Little Mermaid, she also didn't want to be just a princess. Ariel wanted to be human. It reminds me of The Lion King as Simba wanted to have his fun and not be restricted by his parents or his "nanny bird". However, these were also great Disney films and may explain why Brave was also such a great hit!

This film is really fun movie perfect for the whole family and is suitable for all ages.

Get a glimpse of how Brave Princess Merida is in the Brave trailer below.

Brave Trailer

The Amazing Spiderman

Release Date: 3rd July 2012

Genre: Adventure/Superhero/Action

Directed By: Mark Webb

Starring: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and Stan Lee

Synopsis: I hear a lot of you groaning thinking, "Oh no not another Spider Man Movie." Sorry folks but it is yet another one.

This version seems to cast a relative unknown in the role of Spider Man while you will probably be more familiar with his Aunt and Uncle, played by Sally Field and Martin Sheen.

It follows the usual storyline, Peter Parker's parents leave him to be raised by his Aunt and Uncle. He somehow gets bit by a spider and develops superpowers and becomes Spider Man. In this version, it looks like it may delve a little more into what happened to his parents and how that has effected his life. Guess you'll just have to watch it to see.

Suitable For: Kids love films that involve superheroes and are adapted from comics. Although you may have seen Spider Man countless times over the years, it's very likely some of your kids have never seen it.

Ice Age 3

Genre: Animation/Adventure/Comedy

Directed By: Steve Martino and Mark Thurmeier

Starring: Ray Romano, Alan Tudyk, Jon Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Peter Dinklage, Jennifer Lopez and Sean William Scott

Synopsis: The usual suspects, Manny the Mammoth, Diego the Sabre Tooth Tiger and Sid the Sloth embark on another adventure when the continent is set adrift. The drift in the film is caused by the crazy squirell chasing his acorn again!!

The gang need a ship to travel between the continents and use an iceberg. On their adventure they meet new and wonderful characters such as pirates and sea creatures, before they embark on a continent.

Suitable For: This much anticipated 4th installment of Ice Age was a hit across all age groups again.

These funny creatures are hilarious at times, while actually telling a story.

Young kids will enjoy the action and some of the gags, while there will be some adult humour in there for parents too. This is one not to be missed!!

This has to be my favorite kids movie of 2012 and already have the DVD.

More New Kids Movies 2012

There were a large number of kids movies released in 2012. Also remember most films are shown in 3D now. Above are listed ten of the best kids movies 2012. Below is a short list of some of the other contenders.

Step Up 4 - Due to be air in cinema's from July 27th 2012. What kids doesn't like a good dance movie where they battle to see who has the best moves.Expect some of the same as the previous Step Up movies, just with a different couple finding romance.

Hotel Transylvania - Airing in cinema's 21st September 2012. Expect this animated. fantasy, drama to have you giggling away to yourself, especially since it features the voices of Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi, Andy Samberg and Cee-Lo Green.

This movie is about Dracula who runs a high end resort, but not on the human world. That doesn't stop a human boy from finding the resort and falling for Dracula's little girl.

Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 - 16th November 2012. Had to add this as it's such a popular film, especially amongst teenage girls. This will not be suitable for young kids as it's highly likely to be at least PG-13. However, if your child has seen the other films you can bet they are gonna annoy the hell outta you to see the last installment of Bella and Edward.

Watch as Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart turn vampire convention on it's head and have a child. Confusion breaks out where the Volturi believe they have "made" a vampire child by biting a child, which is forbidden. The Volturi are forced to act against the Vampire Coven.

Rise of the Guardians - 21st November 2012. Looks to be a Japanese anime style of movie. It looks like lots of fictional characters such as The Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, Jack Frost and the Sandman have to come together to ward off the Bogeyman. With a star studded cast including Jude Law, Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin and Isla Fisher, it will be interesting to see how this film fairs in 2012.

Let us know what you think of these films. Which movie do you think will be the best 2012 kids movie?

I think that the best movie which is enjoyed the most by the kids during the year 2012 is the Madagascar 3. I also enjoyed myself a lot to watch this movie and must say that it was the best kids movie I have seen ever.
