Updated on August 5, 2014

Movie Ideas for 5 Year Olds

Are you looking for ideas of top movies for 5 year olds?

I am always looking for movie ideas for family movie nights that both my 5 year old son and I will enjoy.

There are lots and lots of cool movies that are suitable for 5 year olds. Some that we have enjoyed include Pixar Disney films, old Disney classics, Toy Story Movies, Charlottes Web, Stuart Little and the Care Bears movies. The article has suggestions of great movies for both 5 year old boys and girls. There are also some ideas of Christmas movies.

Read on for suggestions of the best movies for 5 year olds below.

Movies Based on Books

There are some great movies based on books for 5 year olds. Not only are they great movies, you can read the story with children before or after watching it too.

Ideas include movies based on books by Dr Seuss, The Adventures of Curious George and some Disney movies are based on books like 101 Dalmations (see further on in the article),

Charlotte's Webb and Stuart Little (featured below) are two top ones are based on books by the author E B White. Well worth checking out.

Charlotte's Webb

Many of us will remember the classic novel of Charlotte's web by E B White from our own childhoods and this movie doesn't not disappoint in its adaptations. 5 year olds will love it and so likely too with adults and older children. It tells the story of a pig called Wilbur who is constantly being saved from becoming "pork scratchings". Firstly a little girl, Fern saves Wilbur from her father's axe when he is the runt of the litter. When Wilbur is sent to live in a barn, he is saved again by a spider called Charlotte who spins smart word filled webs above his pen. A lovely tale that may have adults in tears at the end.

Stuart Little

This film tells the story of a mouse who is adopted by a human family (the parents are Geena Davies and Hugh Laurie). The film focuses on Stuart's attempt to fit into life with a human family and his big brother as well as the challenges of living with the family cat Snowbell. Stuart falls into danger when some of Snowbell's schemes take a bad turn and an adventure begins.

Disney Pixar Movies

You can't go wrong with most Disney Pixar movies. Kids and their families just love them. Most of the movies are so clever as they work really well for kids and also for adults who can also enjoy them on another level. There are always jokes aimed at the older viewer.

Toy Story 1, 2 and 3

The Toy Story Movie series is possibly the best set of Disney Pixar Movies (with Toy Story 3 being the best in my opinion) and 5 year olds will love them. They make great family films as they appeal to viewers of different ages on different levels. They tell the story of a little boy called Andy and the adventures of his favorite toys including Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Mr Potato Head.

My personal favorite is Toy Story 3 which I saw with my son and husband at the cinema. My husband and I were quite emotional at the end of the film which was very touching. My son was enchanted by the film too.

Disney Pixar Movies

One of my son's favorite Disney Pixar movies is CARS. It tells the story of Lightening Mcqueen, a top racing car who manages to end up in the sleepy town of Radiator Springs. Here he learns about friendship and how relationships with the other characters are much more important than the fame and fortune of being a top racing car. This film will appeal to both 5 year old girls and boys there are both male and female characters to identify with.

Other magical Pixar movies include Ratatouille which tells of a rat's journey to become head chef in a top Paris restaurant.

Up follows the adventures of 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, who fulfills a lifelong dream when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But he discovers a stowaway on the trip an 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell.

There are tons more Disney Pixar movies. Here are some more:

Wall-E - my son absolutely loved Wall-E and its one of my favorites too. I love the first part of the movie. There's no talking but it explores beautifully the relationship between Wall-E and Eva (both robots). The second part of the movie is completely different but it's quite interesting the pereceptions of how humans may evolve in the future.

Monsters Inc - the first bit of this film scared my 5 year old initially. But, when he realised that the monsters are friendly and are actually scared of kids, he loved this movie.

Others include Finding Nemo and A Bug's life,

Classic Disney Movies

There are lots of great Disney classics that 5 year olds and the rest of the family will love. Here are some ideas:

  • The Jungle Book
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Bambi
  • Sleeping Beauty
  • Lady and the Tramp
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Wall-E
  • 101 Dalmations
  • The Sword in the Stone
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
  • Peter Pan
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Leroy and Stitch
  • Bolt

More modern Disney films include Tangled and Frozen.

Peter Pan

You can't go wrong with Peter Pan, the classic tale which resonates with children who will love the movie about the boy who never grows up and his adventures with the Tinkerbell and others.

Care Bear Movies

Many parents will remember the care bears from their own childhood during the eighties when the care bears were extremely popular. However, despite the time that's passed, the care bears still hold lots of appeal for children. If you fancy revisiting your childhood with your own children check out the move where the world is in trouble...and it's up to the Care Bears to save it!

The Care Bear Movie will be loved by 5 year old girls in particular.

More Animated Movies

There are lots more makers of animated movies that are worth checking out. Dreamworks, Warner Bros and Twentieth Century Fox have all made some great animated movies. Here are some more that 5 year olds should love:

  • Shrek 1, 2 and 3
  • Rio
  • Ice Age
  • Antz
  • Happy Feet

Featuring the voice of Robin Williams, Robots tells the story of Rodney, a robot who is the son of a dishwasher but pledges to follows his dream to become an inventor despite all the odds.

Another movie my son really enjoyed and it has quite an inspirational message too.

Christmas Movies for 5 Year Olds

There are lots of great Christmas movies for 5 year olds. Here are some ideas:

Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town - a classic family movie that features lots of upbeat messages such as caring for others and sharing gifts. It tells how many of Christmas's timeless traditions came about like Santa's red suit, gifts under a tree, and the date of Christmas itself!

A more modern take on Christmas is featured in the movie Arthur Christmas. My son and niece both saw this movie at age 5 and loved it. It shows the more modern technology that Santa now uses to deliver his presents (his spacecraft). But when an undelivered present is discovered the only option is for Arthur to go out to deliver it with Grandsanta on his traditional sleigh and reindeer which means a bumpy ride is in store.

Elf - a comedy that stars Will Ferrell as an human who is raised by elves only to discover he's not an elf but human. He then goes on a mission to find his human father.

Home Alone - Eight-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is accidentally left at home alone while his family go on a Christmas vacation.

Here are some more good Christmas movies that 5 year olds will love:

  • How The Grinch stole Christmas
  • Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas
  • Mickey's Christmas Carol
  • Frosty the Snowman
