Great Religious Films

1. The Passion of The Christ (2004): This film was directed by Mel Gibson and depicts the final twelve hours of the life of Jesus Christ. The film follows the New Testament accounts of Jesus. The movie is the highest grossing R rated film ever made. The film follows the capture and final hours of his life and death on the cross. It has been seen by millions upon millions of people and it is one of the highest grossing movies ever produced. This movie was also very controversial to some people.

2. Left Behind (2000): The film stars Kirk Cameron as a television reporter who discovers the truth about Revelations. When bodies disappear and clothing remains, cars crash and no bodies are found and about a third of the population is gone, he starts to realize that The Lord has took the ones who have accepted him as Lord and Saviour and the rest are Left Behind. Left Behind is a Christian movie based on the book series of the same name. The series focuses on end times in Revelations. Revelations is the last book of The Bible.

3. Bruce Almighty (2003): Morgan Freeman plays the role of God and Jim Carey plays a reporter who thinks he can do a better job at running the world than God. Needless to say, God gives him a chance to run the show and see how complex life really is. It is hilarious and it has a great moral point as well. Bruce Almighty realizes that having the weight of the entire world is more than he bargained for, and harder than expected. It makes you think more about what God goes through each day. The part where Carey hears all the prayers of all the people at the same time makes you think twice about having the ability to hear everything all the time.

4. Noah's Ark (2007): This film takes the plot from the Old Testament in the Bible except in this Disney film the people and the animals interact with each other. Also, the movie is more or less told from the point of view of the animals. It follows the Bible scripture closely and it's very entertaining to say the least. This film is a good family film. Even the children will enjoy watching this one because, it shows all of the animals.

5. The Ten Commandments (1956): Charlton Heston stars as Moses in this look at the Ten Commandments as told in Exodus of the Holy Bible. The Library of Congress preserved this film the National Film Registry. The film was a hit, receiving 7 Academy Awards. The movie had great acting and it followed the Old Testament accurately and truthfully.

6. Saint Mary (2002): This is a movie based on the life of the mother of Jesus according to Islamic readings. The film is shot in the Persian language but it is also in English. The film shows Mary being told by the Angel Gabriel that she will bear a son named Jesus.

7. Peter and Paul (1981): This film stars Anthony Hopkins and tells about the Life of Apostles Peter and in particular Paul. The film shows Paul go from Christian persecutor to Christian recruiter. It's a very moving and dramatic movie based on Bible events from the New Testament.

8. The Book of Life (1998): In this film Jesus, the devil and Mary Magdalene discuss the end of the world and whether or not to go through with it. Jesus comes Dec. 31, 1999 and finds himself enamored by the humans. A very interesting film to say the least. Although fictional it is somewhat based on facts and doctrine. This is personally one of my favorite religious films that I have ever seen.

9. The Omega Code (1999): The film starts in Jerusalem and it focuses on the Anti-Christ and his plan for earthly domination. The film has had a sequel and pulls many of it's themes from Revelation in the Holy Bible. It is actually frightening in ways if you think about what it is saying.

10. Left Behind 2: Tribulation Force: This Bible based film is the sequel and it begins after the rapture where part one ended. The survivors must learn to let God lead their lives. It's a very emotional film especially if you have seen part one. It is a continuation and Kirk Cameron returns in his roll. It was a really good film but, it was not as good as the original.

If you have a favorite religious movie, I would love to hear about it. Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments capsule located at the bottom of this article.

Religion is About Loving God and Your Neighbor

Many religious people bicker and fight against one another which is ridiculous. Christians, Muslims and Jews are taught to be peaceful. When fights start it is really disheartening because it's not supposed to be this way. Remember the next time you are in a confrontation to try to turn the other cheek.

You totally forgot "The Life of Brian"! Great list here, but missing the Monty Python film hurts my heart a little!
