After a full day of work, Brandon found himself sitting in the same old living room chair. His evening was going the same way it normally went: totally uneventful. He sipped on a bottle of beer. He went to get up from his chair but sat back down. He would turn on the television but nothing worth watching was on. He yawned with a deep growl. All he knew was that he needed to break these same old boring patterns: which consists of getting off from work, stopping at the liquor store, coming home and retiring to the decade old lazy-boy-chair. He knew he had to change his habits and routines. He just couldn’t take any more of these boring evenings. What could he do?
Getting trapped in the same old routines can turn into a nightmare if we are not inclined to change our habits. Many times we resist change because it is uncomfortable or we are just too lazy to take the time out to do what needs to be done. We work all day long just to come home to spend the rest of our time in a spirit of boredom. However, there are ways in which we can make our coming home from work exciting and new. Lose Yourself in Music
Music has a way of lifting our spirits when we are bored. You can easily pass time away by listening to your favorite music and visualizing yourself singing to the people you love, especially to a romantic partner. You can even dedicate a favorite song on the radio and look forward to listening to it. Sometimes I like to go back to that old school music that really meant something. When I get lost in my favorite music, I found myself in an atmosphere of excitement. The times just pass away.
Games and Movies
Invest in a collection of games and movies and invite friends over once a week. For years, I was a member of a personal chess club whereas many as twelve guys would gather together for a night of chess and movies. During the course of the week, I looked forward to meeting up with all the guys and discovering who would be the ultimate chess champion. And watching movies, eating chips, drinking pop and telling jokes were great activities for passing the time away.
Go for an Evening Walk in the Park
Many times getting out of the house is a necessity if we desire to maintain sanity. Staying inside and away from people connections, often drain our energy and brings on a feeling of depression, especially in the wintertime. Therefore, an observant walk in the park can rejuvenate our spirit and refresh our soul. I have gone for many walks in the park, reflecting on the sights and sounds and speaking to the people that that crossed my path. Walking in the park is a wonderful way to unwind after a stressful day of work.

Participate in a community Program
Many times we get bored because we are too into ourselves. By simply volunteering to participate in an after school program you can make a difference in a child’s life. When we give of ourselves, we feel a strong sense of joy and peace. This is because giving is magic. Whatever time or resources we give to others it comes back to us in the form of love and warmth. The universe was created to support those who give cheerfully give of their time, money and heart.
Comfort the Heartache and Pain of Others
If you are a person who is unable to empathize with others, you may find yourself very lonely and without friendship. Having an empathetic heart compels you to consider the heartaches and pains of our family, friends and neighbors. We take time out to call them, pray for them or visit them with an encouraging conversation. If we look closely to the people around us, we can always find someone who needs a word of kindness or a pat on the back that says “I Care.”
These routines will give you a new perspective on life. Instead of spending your evening performing the same old boring activities, why not spice up your life with routines that make a difference. Each routine takes us away from ourselves and includes others. Our evenings become meaningful when we pass the time away with the people we love.
