best sci-fi movies 2012

Sci-fi movies in 2012 promises to give us many blockbusters. We try to make here a list with the best science fiction movies from 2012. With much hype and anticipation, movie-goers will be treated to a year of entertaining science fiction fun. Much of the hype for sci-fi movies 2012 comes from the Avengers, a film planned, developed, and built-up on since 2005. The year will also see Men in Black III, Underworld Awakening, the remake of Total Recall, Battleship, and Ridley Scott's Prometheus.

Underworld: Awakening will be one of the first to come to theaters as it will be released in January 20, 2012. It features the return of Kate Beckinsale as the Vampire Selene, the heroin of the first three Underworld films.

It will be set in a world where the humans know about the existence of vampires and lycans and are out to eradicate them. It will also feature the vampire-lycan hybrids and how they will fit into this war. The film is directed by Len Wiseman.

In The Avengers we will see the return of the leads from the tie-in movies Iron-Man, Iron-Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. Robert Downy, Jr. will play Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, and Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

The film will also feature Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Much like in the comic books, The Avengers features superheroes banding together to stop a foe not one of them can defeat alone.

Directed to by Joss Whedon, the film will bring to life the comic book super team as they save the world against Loki the Asgardian god of mischief. The movie will be released on May 4, 2012. Also there is a news that tell us that we will have The Avengers 2 movie.

Battleship is a film inspired by a board game of the same name and will be for sure one of the best science fiction movies 2012. The film features an american naval fleet going against an alien invasion fleet. The film will show both sides of the fleet so that the audiences know their position much like in the board game.

Much more are the effects involved and how the Naval Fleet will handle the invading forces. The film stars Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Alexander Skarsgard, Rihanna, and Liam Neeson. It is directed by Peter Berg and will show great visual effects and a different way of watching two sides of a war. It is set to be released in May 18 2012.

Men in Black III will see the return of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as Agent J and Agent K of the M.I.B. organization. This time Agent J must travel back in time to stop an alien from eliminating a young Agent K played by Josh Brolin and not only save the future but also all of mankind. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and produced by Steven Spielberg, MIB III promises to deliver great action, adventure, special effects, and humor like its predecessors. It is set to be released in May 25, 2012.

Ridley Scott directed the first Alien film and with Prometheus goes back to those roots a little bit. Admittedly written as a prequel to the first Alien film, rewrites forced the story to exist in a world of its own. The film is set in the 21st Century where the crew of a ship named Prometheus explores a place where an advanced civilization of an alien race used to live and tries to discover the origins of man. The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pierce, Idris Elba, and Charlize Theron. The film is set to come out on June 8, 2012.

Total Recall is a remake of the 1990 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. This remake stars Collin Farrell as the main protagonist. His character lives in the far future where Euromerica and New Shanghai are battling for supremacy. He has violent dreams and thinks he is a spy but does not know for which side. This remake reimagines the world of the future in Total Recall adding better effects and settings not available two decades ago. The film is also directed by Len Wiseman and also stars Kate Beckinsale, and Jessica Biel. The movie will come out in theaters in August 3 2012.

Vampires, werewolves, a superhero team, alien invader, time-travel, space exploration, and a dystopian future are only a few of the things that awaits sci-fi lovers in 2012. These are good sci-fi movies and are definitely worth watching on the big screen. Also there are very good movies available down here at the poll: G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Hunger Games, John Carter, Resident Evil: Retribution and the list could go on. You can add your own lists in the comment section.

A pretty poor year for sci-fi. Prometheus storyline could have been a lot better, but the visuals were stunning.

I really liked the Underworld series. Prometheus was pretty good too- although I didn't realize it was a different type of aliens movie, lol. Nice collection

A couple of notes. Isn't the next Batman film due "Batman Rises" -- that should be a major draw. I also do not see the new Spider-Man film listed. In your voting block, a lot of people are betting (so to speak) that "Prometheus" will be the big box office winner. I'm not so sure. It will depend HEAVILY on word of mouth and critic reviews. If all is favorable it should do quite well but may not come out on top. A lot of young people are "past" the whole alien/predator concept. It could turn out to be another "John Carter" unless the studio handles the marketing correctly. My chips are on "The Avengers" and "Batman," and they are the only two films I plan to see in a theater (with the possible exception of "Prometheus. I'll wait for the DVDs to come out to see the others. One last remark. Kate Bekinsale only starred in the first two Underworld movies. She merely had a ten-second cameo in the third.
