Stories!

1. The Young and The Restless (1973) The show is based in a fictional place called Genoa City, Wisconsin. It features wealthy Victor Newman and his life beyond his company, including his hatred for Jack Abbot. Also, Jill Abbott and Kay Chancellor have had a thirty plus year running feud. There's a lot of jealousy of each other. Jealousy over the things that each other have, how they look, what women they have and what car they drive. Who has the biggest and best of things.. If I was going to watch a soap opera, it would be this one. I did watch it for a little while.

2. The Days of Our Lives (1965) The Horton and the Brady families are the focal point of this show which is set in the fictional city of Salem. Both men were doctors and one of them was over a mental hospital, The show is a cross between a soap opera and Greys Anatomy wrapped into one burrito. I never got into watching this soap opera. This show succeeded because of great story lines that was ever changing and the writers of this show should be commended.

3. As The World Turns (1956) This story/soap opera ran for fifty four (54) years before calling it quits in 2010. The show is set in fictional Oakdale, Illinois and the characters are mostly doctors and lawyers. The show focuses on the lives of the Hughes family. Drama at home and in the workplace, is profiled on a daily basis. The show started out in black and white before converting over to color. This show saw many changes in how episodes were recorded.

4. The Bold and The Beautiful (1987) This show centers around the Forrester family and their daily lives. The family owns a fashion business and it is chronicled on each episode. The stories are set in Los Angeles, California and the Forrester's have four children. Some of the characters on this show also guest starred on The Young and The Restless and vice versa.

5. One Life To Live (1968) This series first aired in 1968, and it is set in a fictional Pennsylvania town. This show focuses on the Lord family, which is very wealthy, and the Riley and Wolek families, who are middle class. This show deals with any and every topic from drugs, alcoholism and espionage to out of body experiences and cults. It is the first soap to have interracial couples. This was a big deal for this era in our history.

6. General Hospital (1963) The show centers on the personal lives and the professional lives of those people who work for the hospital in Port Charles, New York. The hospital is barely a part of the series any longer as the focus has switched to the Quartermaines company called ELQ. The show deals with the mob as well as everyday problems like divorce.

7. Guiding Light (1952 and on radio from 1937- 1956) This show ran from 1952 until 2009 and the heart of the show is the Bauer family. A middle class, hard working family. Also, many wealthy families emerge throughout out the years. This show has had some of the best dramatic scenes ever seen. It would rank higher but, sometimes they went a little over the top which hurt their overall standings.

8. All My Children (1970) This show aired for 41 years and it is set in the fictional town of Pine Valley, Pennsylvania. This show centers on Erica Kane and her personal and professional life as well. The show is popular for it's social issues which kept up with today's problems. The rich, middle class and the poor make up this soap opera cast. A show that lasts for this long means, that a lot of people could relate to these characters.

9. Dark Shadows (1966) This Gothic, horror soap opera documents The Collins family. This wealthy family is tormented by demons, vampires and ghosts. The plot twists and scary themes were what made this a unique show. Also, the show has the second most episodes in history for a Paranormal show, behind only Passions.

10. The Edge of Night (1956) This soap aired from 1956-1984 and revolves around several lawyer's and their crime solving techniques. And of course, their personal lives are par for course. This show features a woman with a split personality and mafia gangsters throughout and many more dramatic scenes that are top notch. I don't remember this particular soap opera but, it also had a good long run on television.

I can see how easy it is to become addicted to watching soap operas. I hear women talk about their favorite soap operas and how they have watched the same ones for years. I know of people who tape them everyday and come home and watch them. There's a soap opera magazine. There must be something about them though, because, they are so popular. i would hear certain women who would watch several soap operas a day. Being able to record TV shows to DVR has really changed this world of recording.

All My Children gets my vote for best soap ever. General Hospital comes in 2nd place. I haven't watched either in many years, but a lot of nice memories come along with each of those shows.
