Best Telugu Movies 2014
2014 has been a very successful year for Telugu cinema. Along with major hits like Manam, Legend and Race gurram, there were some very special movies like Nenokkadine, Minugurulu and Chandamama kathalu. Success of these offbeat films is a welcome change and hope more such films are made in future.
Along with this success, there were also some major disappointments like Aagadu, Anamika, Alludu seenu, etc. Below is a list of,

A prestigious film for Akkineni family, Manam is a drama film directed by Vikram Kumar and produced by Akkineni family. This film stars heroes of three generations from the same family. Before this, only Raj Kapoor family managed to do this feat. This film is an example of intelligent choices that Akkineni family makes. This film deals with rebirth and ‘eternal love’. An extremely innovative plot, excellent technical values and most importantly, great performances make this film a milestone film in Telugu film industry.
Radha, Krishan and Bittu make a family with some frictions between the couple. One particular day, the couple die in an accident. Bittu grows up and notices that his parents are born again and his goal becomes to unite them. On the same lines, Bittu and his love dies in a previous birth and their son is the oldest character in the movie unites Bittu with his love.
Such a complicated subject was beautifully handled and the performances of real life father playing reel life son in previous birth are a pleasure to watch. This film is one of the highest grossing film in overseas.
2. One: Nenokkadine
Different and good films are rare in Telugu film industry. A Neo-noir, psychological thriller, 1: Nenokkadine is one such film directed by innovative and talented Sukumar and distributed by 14 Reels Entertainment. Though, this film lags here and there, Opening scene is stunning, the idea of the film is great, technical values are brilliant along with a haunting theme music makes it one of the most stylish Telugu films. Mahesh Babu’s performance is as usual top notch.
A famous rock star is suffering from a very interesting psychological problem while he knows that someone killed his parents and he has to take revenge. The film is about how he finds the truth while the truth and imagination is blurred in his mind.
Boyapati srinu known for his violent and gripping action movies directs another such movie while 14 reels distribute the movie. Though the story is not very innovative, treatment is good and the movie is very engaging. Action sequences are violent and Balakrishna gets a fresh style. This film joins the 40 Crore club making it one of the highest grossing films of all time. Jagapathi Babu plays the villain for the first time.
The plot is about a conflict between two families. One which is righteous and fights for people while the other family is a power hungry family for whom killing comes easy.
4. Race Gurram
Joining the 50 Crore club; this is the highest grossing film of 2014. Not only that, this is probably the most entertaining film of 2014. Known for his innovative comedy, plot and racy screenplay, Surender Reddy directs this film while Nallamalupu Srinivas and Dr. Venkateswara Rao produces this film. Racy screenplay, brother sentiment and very high entertainment quotient makes this a stress busting film.
A sincere police officer and a happy-go-lucky guy are brothers who don’t agree with each other in anything which is a concern for their parents. Siva reddy is factionist who wants to become politician while the sincere police office stands in the way. In a scuffle, the younger brother realises his love for his brother and rest of the film is the race between Siva reddy and the younger brother.
A remake of the most successful Malayalam movie of the same name, Drushyam is directed by yesteryear heroine Sripiya while D. Suresh Babu produces the film. Choosing a family thriller at this time of the career is one of the best decisions Venkatesh has made.
This film is about how a simple man with his movie knowledge takes extreme steps to save his family from law for a crime which can be morally justified.
A supernatural thriller, Karthikeya is shot both in Telugu and Tamil simultaneously. This film is directed by Chandoo Mondeti while Venkat Srinivas produces the film. Another different and successful film of this year is a very good addition to Telugu film industry.
A medical student, Karthikeye sets out to unravel the mysterious shut down of a temple in south India.
7. Run Raja Run
Directed by Sujeeth and produced by UV Creations, Run Raja Run is a caper-comedy film. Sharwanand carries this film throughout thus making a commendable come back. A caper story with good screenplay makes this a breezy entertainer.
While Raja keeps breaking up with girls, he finally falls in love with a girl. At the same time, serial kidnaps are the talk of the town which is being investigated by none other than the girl’s father. The rest of the film is about how Raja gets struck in this kidnaps and what happens to his love.
8. Oohalu Gusagusalade
Adaptation of a 19th century French play Cyrano de Bergerac, Oohalu Gusagusalade is directed by Srinivas Avasarala and produced by Sai Korrapati. This breezy romantic sitcom type movie lags here and there. However, it manages to stand out through its more than decent performances, great cinematography, wonderful music and crisp screenplay.
Venky is an aspiring news reader and to fulfil this aspiration, he has to help his boss to woo his fiancé. The trouble starts when Venky realises that his boss’s fiancé is Venky’s ex girl-friend and they both are still in love.
Successful writer, Kona Venkat writes and produces while Raj Kiran directs this Horror comedy film Geethanjali. Heroine Anjali, though she appears fat, she stands out through her terrific performance. The plot twists are fantastic and makes this film very gripping. This film is a very good film that can be made in low budget and look rich through performances and story.
An apartment becomes haunted after a girl commits suicide. Srinivas is an aspiring film director who narrates his interactions which the ghost to a film producer. The film producer insists Srinivas to interaction with the ghost more to form the climax. However, an interesting twist reveals the relationship between the ghost and producer.
10. Govindudu Andarivadele
This family drama film, nicknamed as GAV, is a comeback film for the creative director Krishna Vamsi. This beautiful looking film is a typical Krishna Vamsi family entertainer and it fetched success to him after a while. Also, this film has given a new look to the Ram Charan whom we have seen mostly in Action roles.
Though special films are a little rare in Telugu cinema, this year saw some very different movies.
This film which is a story of visually impaired children has been selected as the Best Indian Film at the 9th India International Children's Film Festival and is also an official selection to Fifth International Disability Film Festival - Ability Fest. This film is by far the best Telugu film of the year.
An anthology film directed by Praveen Satturu, this shows the lives of eight different people through eight different stories and how they are intertwined.
This film is about the journey of five college graduates who are unable to bid goodbye to each other decides to visit each other’s houses.
This is a story of a young, intelligent man played by Nara Rohit who deals with corruption and political issues by kidnapping a minister.
A very different film directed by a very different actor, Prakash Raj, Ulavacharu Biriyani is a film about how a recipe unites an old couple and how a young couple plays havoc with that union.
A psychological thriller film by the National award winning director Neelakanta, this film is about a girl who can see future and how that affects her life.
A young chap returns to India from America and regrets his decision. His dad’s advice changes his perspective towards India. However, does that change in perspective help is the rest of the film.
Another movie by a very special and innovative director, Ravi Babu. This film is about a fatso and how his association with a kid changes his life. Though the story and the screenplay of the film is pathetic, Allari Naresh’s performance as a fatso and such an attempt by Ravibabu is commendable.
