Game of Thrones Season 1 & 2

Can you imagine living in a place where one season spans years? Hot summers and frigid winters last a long time. There are seven kingdoms of Westeros, and as summer is ending and winter is beginning, Lord Eddard Stark is asked by King Robert Baratheon to serve as the King’s Hand. Eddard does not want to accept this position at first, but once he finds out that it’s possible his predecessor was murdered, he decides to take up the post and investigate the situation.

Trouble brews on the continent of Essos with the children in the House of Targaryen. The King destroyed the house, and those affected are plotting to return to Westeros and get the usurper King off the throne. Viserys Targaryen arranges the marriage of his sister Daenerys to Khal Drogo who is the leader of 40,000 warriors whom Targaryen wants to use to invade Westeros. Daenerys has no real evil agenda but simply wants to avoid King Robert’s assassins, and get away from her brothers scheming.

Far north, at the border, The Night’s Watch guard the Wall. This 300 mile long fortification has stood for thousands of years but is still watched in the event the wildlings beyond decide to organize and attack the Seven Kingdoms.

Season Two begins with the war between the Seven Kingdoms and the King of the North, Robb Stark. He fights to gain independence for his people, and those in the Riverlands. Robb wants to win the allegiance of the Ironborn for his cause; he sends his best friend Theon Greyjoy to try to make peace with his father who seems to have his own plans. With Robert Baratheon dead, his son Joffrey holds the Iron Throne. However, his uncle Renly is claiming the throne as well and he has a much bigger army. Joffrey is suspected to be born of incest and therefore not the rightful king. As the Cersei, the Queen Regent’s brother comes to help matter, he finds opposition with her.

Stannis Baratheon is Robert's younger brother, and is older than Renly, and he is also claiming the Iron Throne as well. With help from Melisandre’s priestess magic, they are hatching to take the throne.

Back in the east, Daenerys Targaryen has hatched three dragons. As she cares for them, she knows they will become great weapons.

In the north, the Night’s Watch is going beyond the Wall to search for missing rangers and gather evidence of wildlings organizing in the mountains.

The Walking Dead Season 1 & 2

Another highly popular show is one full of the undead. The Walking Dead opens with Sheriff Deputy Rick Grimes slipping into a coma, then waking up to a world forever changed. Zombies have overrun everything and they are labeled as Walkers. Setting across the country to Atlanta Georgia, he is looking for a safe zone that he has heard the CDC has set up. Once he arrives however, he realizes the city is overrun and he still cannot find his missing wife and son. Lori and Carl, whom Rick is looking for, has set up a small camp with other survivors nearby. The family is reunited and Rick takes a leadership position with the group. They leave the camp to search out weapons, but upon their return, they find the camp has been overtaken by Walkers.

Within the CDC, everyone but one man, Dr. Edwin Jenner, have fled or killed them in an attempt to avoid zombification. The small group tries to find a haven in the CDC building but safety is dwindling as the generators die from lack of fuel. They decide to leave and find the French scientists who may have found a cure.

Season two finds the group leaving Atlanta to get to Fort Benning. Hiding under cars to avoid the Walkers, dealing with interpersonal relationships and the stress that been building from fighting for their lives, the group finds themselves divided. One of their own has become a Walker and is shot because of it. Major melancholy sets in as the group is losing hope, especially when they find out that Fort Benning has been overrun as well. They find out that the dead can reanimated even without being exposed to the Walkers. They have discovered that they all carry the plague and will return as Walkers once they die. This new realization changes the way they view everything. As the season ends, the group sees a prison looming in the distance where they hope they can find refuge.

Top Rated Comedy TV Series

The Office Season 1 - 7

This “docu-reality” show is one of the funniest around. The workers at Dunder Mifflin are pushing paper, literally. While working 9-5, they try their best to get clients to buy their paper. It is run by Michael Scott who is the quirkiest of men. He believes he is the office comic and through his strange ways, he tried to get his employees to think he is cool and amazing. Although he usually just comes across as ridiculous. In fact, he bought himself his “World’s Greatest Boss” mug since no one else would. The rest of the office has quite an eclectic group of employees. A creepy guy with a shady history, a middle aged over sexed woman, and the cute receptionist. Some of the best scenes involved Dwight and Jim who sit right next to each other and try to sabotage each other endlessly. Jim has been in love with Pam the receptionist from the beginning, and she seems to favor him, but neither of them are willing to admit it to the other. With constant humor, some very off color, and the romance budding between Jim and Pam, there is enough here to keep you entertained through all nine seasons.

Best Comedy Blended Families TV Shows

Modern Family Season 1 - 3

Now for some lighthearted synopsis’ Modern Family Seasons 1-3 will leave you in stitches from laughing so hard. I like this show because it seems to adequately portray modern families across the globe. The way it is filmed is also unique as a “mockumentary” as the characters talk to the camera about their lives as the show is airing. Revolving around Jay Pritchett is the center of the family with his very young, and very beautiful Columbian second wife who has a child from a previous relationship. This is weird for his daughter Claire who is married to Phil and shares three children with him. Her stepmother is just as young, or younger, than she. Claire’s brother Mitchell is openly gay and is married to his partner whom adopted an Asian baby. This quirky family has all manner of mishaps and miscommunications, but they always come back to the love they have for each other, even if they don’t always see eye to eye.

As a mother myself, I know the kind of chaos that can ensue from children, and from family members with unique circumstances. My husband and I seem to relate very well with Phil and Claire and often tease each other because of it.

Best Drama TV Shows

Downton Abbey Season 1, 2, & 3

In Yorkshire, a country house is the seat of the Earl and Countess of Grantham. The Crawley family and their servants are running the home during the reign of King George V. The first season is before the Great War and starts out with the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. The third series runs through 1921. The show follows the lives of both the aristocratic family and their servants through wars, the Spanish influenza pandemic, scandals and the breakdown of the aristocracy. With love, jealousy, contention and plotting, the characters are portrayed very accurately as how people would behave in such situations.

There is a big need for a male heir to take over the estate. Lady Mary tries hard to find a suitable husband. The Earldom is in peril as finances take a plunge and he saves it by marrying an American heiress. These two have only three daughters and no son to pass their fortunes to. Their daughter is set to marry her cousin and both of them perish on the Titanic. The estate continues to experience financial hardships.
