Mani ratnam and Ilayaraja - Top Albums

Updated on May 21, 2017

It is interesting that two greatest legends of Indian cinema Maniratnam and Ilayaraja share the same date of birth. Maniratnam is born on June 2, 1956 on Ilayaraja on June 2, 1943. Ilayaraja was the person responsible for the timeless music in Maniratnam's first 10 films.

Ilayaraja is not just a master of melodies and fast beat songs but also a master of background music. Though, there is a list of such memorable BGMs by Ilayaraja for Maniratnam, that's for some other time. This is is list of their 10 albums starting with the best.

1. Geethanjali (1989)

Geethanjali has 7 songs and every song is a super hit and remains etched in the minds of Telugu audience. "Oh Priyaa Priyaa!", "Oh Paapaa Laali!" and "Om Namaha" are heart touching love songs representing different moods of love. "Om Namha" has been shot boldly. While "Jagada Jagada" captures the essence of flourishing youth, "Aamani Paadave" captures the philosophy of a youth who doesn't have a future. "Jallanta Kavvinta" is probably one of the best heroine introduction songs.

2. Anjali (1990)

Anjali also has 7 songs out of which 5 songs are sung by a bunch of children. This is an apt choice as Anjali is film based on Children and all the songs are blockbuster and are wonderful. "Something Something" sung by children is a stylized introduction song. "Iravu Nilavu" is also sung by children along with the legendary singer Janaki which is filler song during an important scene. "Motta Maadi" and "Vaanam Namakku" are again filler songs sung by children to enhance the atmosphere of the movie. "Anjali Anjali" is the iconic song of the film shot around the lead character, Anjali. "Raathiri Nerathil" and "Vegam Vegam" are the two fantasy songs not sung by children.

3. Agni Natchathiram (1988)

Like a standard Indian musical film, Agni Natchathiram has 6 super hit songs. All the songs looks extremely raw and stylized. "Ninnukori Varanam" is probably the best song in this film and this is a wonderful combination of western and Indian classical music. This is a duet shot in one room and very different lighting was used to avoid monotony. "Oru Poonga Vanam" is a song sung by heroine while swimming. One of the most feminine melodies. "Raaja Raajathi" is my personal favorite and a beat oriented song by a youthful hero. "Roja Poo Adivanthathu" is an experimental song sung by heroine while hero Gyms. "Thoongatha Vizhigal" is the most beautiful song with an Indian classical touch. "Vaa Vaa Anbe Anbe" is the most haunting, romantic and bold song with the most beautiful rendering by K.J.Yesudas.

4. Thalapathi (1991)

Thalapathi has 7 songs. All of them are very different and timeless. "Rakkama Kaiya Thattu" was amongst the songs listed in a BBC World Top Ten music poll. While "Kaattukuyilu" is one of the timeless friendship songs, "Sundari Kannal" is the timeless songs for lovers who are away from each other. "Yamunai Aatrile" and "Chinna Thayaval" are based on Indian classical music and are extremely melodious. "Putham Puthu Poo" and "Margazhithan" are two montage songs and really enhances the movie atmosphere.

5. Mouna ragam (1986)

Ilaiyaraja's sensitive and wonderful music in Mouna ragam showcased his urban side once again. "Oho Megam Vandhadho" is a beautiful heroine introduction song. "Nilaavae Vaa" is a timeless melody to hear on whenever you feel like relaxing. "Chinna Chinna Vanna Kuyil" is a clean and detoxifying melody sung by heroine. "Panivizhum Iravu" is a seductive beat based song. "Mandram Vandha" is probably one of the most stylish tamil song.

6. Nayagan (1987)

Nayagan is Ilayaraja's 400th film and his long time partners Vali and S.P.Balu were not part of this. "Thenpandi Cheemayile" is such a wonderful song capturing the essence of Nayagan. "Nee Oru Kadhal Sangeetham" is the super hit timeless melody in this film. "Nila Adhu Vanathumele" is a fast based item song written, composed and sung by Ilayaraja. "Andhi Mazhai Megam" is a celebration of an Indian festival Holi and "Naan Sirithal Deepavali" is a very offbeat song to introduce a prostitute house.

8. Idaya Kovil (1985)

Idaya Kovil is a musical hit though this has not put Maniratnam on the big stage. Idhayam Oru Kovil is the biggest hit which is written and sung by Ilayaraja himself.

S. P. Balasubrahmanyam has given the male voice for almost all the songs except two songs which are sung by Ilayaraja. Only one song required female voice which was given by the legendary singer S. Janaki.

Lyrics are written by 6 different people.
