Billy Joel - Piano man Harmonica

Updated on February 17, 2012 flickr flickr

Billy Joel Harmonica Lesson

Hi guys, Billy Joel fans and fellow harmonica players/learners, This is one song which I found particularly easy to pick up, it's a great song and the Youtube video is also especially artistic because it has actors in a bar 'playing the character's' he talks about in his lyrics.

Please excuse the fact that my tutorial video is no longer present, I started a new Youtube channel and accidentally deleted my old one, I will get around to filming me playing in the future, for now I have left the tab for you to practice.

This song is a representation of Billy's previous employment at a Lounge Bar in Los Angeles, and how he comforted other's at the bar and allowed them to escape from their 9-5 jobs, giving them hope to pursue their life's dreams. flickr flickr

Above is a photo of Billy Joel in concert during recent years, he obviously still has the energy he had when he release 'Piano man' in 1973, which is considered his hit song. Without further ado, here is the tab for the chord's played during the beginning of the song and it is played in a key of 'C':

567 -567 567

-56 56 -56 56

45 - 56 56 - 56

56 -56

567 -567 567

-56 56 -56 56

34 -45 45

-34 34

Its' NINE o'Clock on a Saturday..

And that's basically it, remember that the minus symbol means draw and that two or more numbers together means you play them at the same time(chords) Try to practice until you can play it rather fast and add a little vibrato if you've learnt that, its basically giving the end of the harmonica a little shake while its in your mouth.

Good Luck!

That's the end for this lesson, I hope you found it helpful or entertaining, I didn't want to digress into all information about Billy Joel's history and different albums, because lets face it, if you've found this page you're either looking for tips on playing the harmonica or your a big Billy Joel fan looking for something different about him, not pages with statistics you probably have already seen on a ton of other similar pages. I apologise, I think something went wrong with the webcam halfway through and the audio doesn't stay in time with the video, so you can still see me playing and the audios already reached the part where I'm talking!

@earnestshub how can you tell someone you cant even spell the name right (which mean you must not have listen to a lot of his stuff) that he is a bad harp player? all their songs with harps are the best i know, i love their style, it just something different from what you listen to but it doesn't make them bad harp players

Nice! Billy Joel is a fine musician in many ways, but like Bob Dillon, not a great one on the mouth organ. I have a full set of blues harps.

I can play better than both of them.

Don't get me wrong they both do fine work, but the mouth organ does not seem to be either musicians forte.

Having said that, I love both of them otherwise as musicians although Bob Dillon as a guitarist is also pretty poor in my view.

      Thumbs up for this hub.

Never heard of him (sorry: ( But I will spend a considerable time of my afternoon looking him up and acquainting myself with his music! Great hub by the way. I like your idea! I will say this however. Years ago I bought I cheap harmonica thinking all you did was slide your mouth across the cool metal. My poor, poor family. It's a wonder I did not bust any of their ear drums! I gave up that ambitious hobby in no time at all!
