Background

Blue Jays is the name of the album released in March 1975 by Justin Hayward (born 14Oct1946) and John Lodge (born 20Jul1945) during their five year break from recording and performing with the Moody Blues.

Following the release of Seventh Sojourn there were tensions and strained relationships between the band as they planned the next album, and the project was subsequently called off. Hayward said at the time that he was under a lot of pressure from the record label Decca to release something so he went to the USA to work with Mike Pinder. John Lodge and Tony Clarke (music producer) had later turned up at Pinder’s house and he then said to Hayward that he would not work with anyone else and Blue Jays was instead recorded by Hayward, Lodge and Clarke in the Decca Studios in London.

My Own Personal Opinion

All the tracks are emotional, moody and melodic with beautifully constructed lyrics, harmonies and orchestral arrangements. It is a truly great album of pure quality. It has an almost ethereal sound created by the vocals of both Justin Hayward and John Lodge. This is how true music should be. They just don’t make them like this anymore. The thoughts and opinions on most of the songs meaning are my own interpretations. So if anyone has any official interpretations they would be gratefully received.

List of Original Album Tracks and CD Bonus Track with Lyrics

There were 10 tracks on the original vinyl album. Blue guitar which was released as a single was added as a bonus track when the CD was released.

This Morning (Hayward)

This opening track gives the listener a flavour, almost a teaser, of how the album will develop musically and vocally and designed to take the listener on the first steps of a symphonic journey. It is considered to be about having someone and not realising their worth instead just accepting they will always be there. Then suddenly it is too late as they are gone.

Lyrics

As the dawn is breaking on your future my child is there none of your love alive? If every door you open closes on me I don’t know if I can survive. I don’t know if I can survive. Long is the road that takes you from home. My baby, oh my darling. And sleepless are the hours, and lonely is the night for the poor tormented soul who is searching for the light.

This morning I opened my eyes I knew from the silence that something was wrong. Turning I realised I wanted to cry when I knew I was alone. But where will you go and who will be your guide and which way will you turn the waters are so wide. ‘Cause I never told you, no you’ll never really know, I need you so.

Now the sun is rising on your freedom my child is there none of your love alive? Every door you open closes on me I don’t know if I can survive knowing part of your love was lies.

Remember Me (My Friend) (Hayward and Lodge)

Released as a single in April 1975. Hayward and Lodge preferred this as the A side while the public actually favoured the B side “I Dreamed Last Night”.

The song is about a having a true friend who is there for you and thinks as you do without having to say the words. It was also thought the lyrics were being sung by someone who has died and is asking that their friend never forgets them.

Lyrics

You don’t need to ask me if I’ll be your friend. I am. I am. You don’t need to ask me if I’m sure my friend. I am. I am.

I am your friend you must remember me. I’m the one who saw through the world’s disguise. Took away its cloak and made it hide. From me, remember me.

Walking on this Earth finding you, you, you, you. Walking on this Earth finding you, you, you, you. What can I say? You don’t need to find the worlds to say what’s on your mind.

If you need a reason to begin again. I am. I am. You will find an answer at your journeys end.

I am waiting there my friend you must remember me. I’m the one who knew you when I’m the one you call your friend. Feel free, remember me.

Walking on this Earth finding you, you, you, you. Walking on this Earth finding you, you, you, you. What can I say? You don’t need to find the worlds to say what’s on your mind. (Repeat and fade on you, you, you).

My Brother (Hayward)

The lyrics suggest the song is about not just a brother but a true friend who has moved across the ocean.

Lyrics

My brother if you could cast a little light on someone it’s not too soon. You took me halfway round the world I’m running out of time and reasons. My true friend if you could tell me what it is that keeps you from coming down. You left me way up in the clouds the higher you fly the less I see you.

So far across a wild and windy sea. So far that our voices are divided by an ocean, an ocean.

My brother if you could take a little time to slow down it’s more your style. It takes a lifetime to decide I’m running out of time and reasons.

So far across a wild and windy sea. So far that our voices are divided by an ocean, an ocean.

You (Lodge)

This song signifies that too many people judge others without knowing them or understanding the world they live in. It is also thought to mean that Lodge felt to many people knew him but didn’t really take the time to find out how the real John Lodge feels. Another suggestion is that it is simply the way Lodge felt about the differences in the Moody Blues which lead to the five year break up.

Lyrics

You don’t even know my name. Time was when you would, take the love you’ve given all away, take a part of me. You don’t even walk my road. Can’t find where you turned. Looked away and you were gone, now we’re on our own. Old man is this why we’re alone.

I, I believe what is lost forever has brought the change in me. I, I believe what is lost forever has brought the change in me.

You don’t even know my world. I’ve tried hard to see, if I’d found the world you’re looking for there’d be a change in me.

You don’t even know my name. Time was when you would, take the love you’ve given all away, take a part of me. You’ve gone and changed the world I see.

I, I believe what is lost forever has brought the change in me. I, I believe what is lost forever has brought the change in me.

Nights, Winters, Years (Hayward)

This has lush orchestral arrangement building to a massive final climax.

This is thought to be about a long lost love that is still remembered and missed, despite that person being with someone else now.

Lyrics

Pain, sorrow, tears. Long lonely years. With love having passed me by I could live a lie for you. But truth is the road I choose knowing all I need to do is give to you.

Down, down, down. Where your dreams are found. They’re sleeping inside of use all. They’re sleeping inside of use all.

Nights, Winters, Years. Pain, sorrow tears of mine cannot hold me now. I’m a fool to fall for you but here in the morning light how can love be wrong and feel so right.

Saved By The Music (Lodge)

Starts with an acoustic guitar and piano building to a grand sing-along climax. Jim Cockey (violin) learned to play the French Horn especially for this track.

Lodge said at the time that he wrote the song to show that other people’s music was also very important to him. It also makes the point that for most people they can escape the realities of life by getting immersed in their favourite music.

Lyrics

When you’re swallowing all your pride. Do you need somewhere a place to hide? A smile from your face where the light comes shining through. All it’s strength it came from you.

It’s lost now all that age before I knew you. Is it that forever is hard to find? You made me recognise what I’d be leaving far behind. Is it closing in on you like it was on me?

This time I’m saved by the music saved by the song that you bring.

When you’re following all life’s lies and find it’s meaning the truth still hides. Don’t cover your face let the warmth come flowing through. Welcome dawn new morning dew.

This time I’m saved by the music saved by the song we can sing. This time I’m saved by the music saved by the song that you bring.

When your swallowing all life’s lies……. This time we’re saved by the music saved by the song we can sing. This time I’m saved by the music saved by the song that you bring.

I Dreamed Last Night (Hayward)

A simple acoustic guitar opener with a lovely melody. Hayward said at the time that this was the easiest song to write and record. It took him only an hour to write it. It is classed by many as the best song on the album.

These are difficult lyrics to interpret; a new love or forbidden love, someone afraid of commitment, or even possibly a love affair. Maybe Justin will let me know.

Lyrics

Oh I dreamed last night I was hearing, hearing your voice. And the things you said well they left me, left me no choice. And you told me we had the power, and you told me this was the hour. But you don’t know how if I could show you now.

Well I dreamed last night you were calling, calling my name. You were locked inside of your secrets calling my name. And you told me lost was the key, and you told me how you long to be free. But that you don’t know how, oh let me show you now.

Like a bird on a far distant mountain. Like a ship on an uncharted sea. You are lost in the arms that have found you. Don’t be afraid, love’s plans are made. Oh don’t be afraid. If there’s a time and a place to begin love, it must be now. Let it go, set it free.

Oh I dreamed last night I was hearing, hearing your voice. Why did you say those things that have left me no choice? When you told me we had the power, why did you tell me now was the hour. But you don’t know; oh let me show you now.

Who Are You Now (Hayward)

Thought to be about someone wondering where their first love is now and what they are doing in their life.

Lyrics

Who are you now, first love of mine? If you could see, you’d reach out for me. In hallways and in secret doorways were love’s hiding places with nowhere to go. Goodbye to the fields and byways I remember saying I don’t want to leave. ‘Cos you were all there was to know about me.

Somewhere on this crazy island a familiar stranger sleeps so far away. But wonder in the eyes of children and the smile of fortune helps the memory fade. ‘Cos they are all there is to know about me.

Who are you now?

Maybe (Lodge)

This slow melodic song is raised to a different level by the inclusion of Horns, a Cello, Strings, an Organ and even Trumpets.

This is about finding true love for the first time and all the emotions that go along with those feelings.

Lyrics

Maybe, Maybe I’m wrong, to go on thinking, to sing my song. Maybe, this world’s falling down, call up the trumpeters to knock the wall down.

Someone who needs, someone who feels, someone who sees can find you.

Slowly, slowly we walk no harm in crying no sense in talk. Slowly, the ice melts away call on the choir to sing and turn no one away

Someone who needs, someone who feels, someone who sees can find you. (repeat)

Maybe, Maybe I’m wrong; the river holds its breath the sea will keep its calm. Slowly, Slowly we turn; a look at where we’ve been the juggler has to learn.

Someone who needs, someone who feels, someone who sees can find you. (repeat)

When You Wake Up (Lodge)

Another song that has lyrics which are difficult to decipher. Any suggestions are welcome.

Lyrics

Now as we speed a little faster through the stars to this new world of ours. With the seed that the garden requires. And as we drift a little further from the shore like the seas evermore, I’m the ivy that clings round your door.

When you wake up you will find you are not where you left yourself.

Now as we drift a little further down the stream was it all what it seemed? Was it true was it real or just a dream?

When you wake up you will find you are not where you left yourself.

Blue Guitar (Hayward)

This track was not on the original album but was released as a vinyl single in September 1975. It was added to the album when it was released as a CD in 1987.

It is credited on the single as Hayward and Lodge but Lodge does not sing or play on the song. It was recorded by Hayward and the members of the band 10CC (Lol Crème and Kevin Godley). The credit was removed on the CD version.

This is about feeling good and appreciating all that the world has to give not just visually but musically.

Lyrics

Blue guitar, fortune of my ways making of my days. New chord, counting up the ways, happiness is lazy.

If you don’t know the song. If you can’t put the words to the tune. Tell the rhyme from the reason. What should it matter to the fool or the dreamer?

New hope, travellers in a storm finding love is warm. New day, the world has just begun our eyes have seen the sun.

If you don’t know the way, If you can’t see the woods for the trees. Taste the wine from the water, well what should it matter to the fool or the dreamer.

I grew up with the Moody Blues, and I definitely know their worth. They were so different, which made them so enticing.

They were definitely gifted musicians and song writers. The other thing is that they let their music do the talking and kept their private lives private... lots of so called artists could learn a lot from them.
