Bounty Hunter Showdown

Star Wars spoilers ahead.

Today's galactic clash features the two greatest bounty hunters in galactic history: Jango and Boba Fett. These two aren't just the best at what they do—they're family. Boba is Jango's son... sort of. We'll get to that in a minute. For now, lets analyze each fighter's equipment and skills to determine the ultimate hunter in the Star Wars universe!

Bounty Hunter Extras

  • 1. In case you didn't know, bounty hunters are hired to track down and eliminate or capture targets. The targets could be outlaws... or simple civilians who angered a wealthy client. To most hunters, it doesn't matter, as long as the credits (Star Wars currency) keep coming.
  • 2. Mandalorians are a nomadic people in Star Wars. They'll take members of any species, and value war and pride above all else. Whether or not you agree with their culture, you have to admit their armor looks awesome.
  • 3. Count Dooku is the Sith apprentice to Darth Sidious. Dooku and Sidious plot to destroy the Jedi, but need Jango to serve as the template for a clone army that will help accomplish their mission.
  • 4. Comlinks are pretty much Star Wars's version of cell phones.

Jango Fett

We'll begin with our Sparknotes summary of dear old dad. As a child, Jango was raised by Mandalorians2 after his parents were murdered. He traveled through the ranks and became a competent and talented leader for the group.

Eventually, his path led to becoming a bounty hunter, and he quickly grew notorious for his skill. Intrigued, Count Dooku3 selected Jango as the template for a clone army Dooku wished to create. Jango accepted, but requested a clone for himself, to raise as his own. This clone, Jango's 'son', would be known as Boba Fett. Dooku agreed, and hired Jango for many jobs over the next decade, until Jango's death at the hands of Jedi Master Mace Windu. Fett may be gone, but his legacy as a talented leader, deadly bounty hunter, and devoted father remains, and Boba would forever upgrade and pilot Jango's Firespray-class spaceship, Slave 1, as a tribute.

  • Intelligent. Jango utilizes strategies in addition to his arsenal to defeat his opponents. Although, given his brains, it's weird how he leaps for Windu's lightsaber instead of just shooting him.
  • Combat Training. Jango is a skilled warrior, even when disarmed. With his armor protecting him, Jango is shown to match Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi in a brawl.

  • Mandalorian Armor. Jango's protective garb, made of durasteel, provides defense against blaster bolts and blunt force, though it won't stop a lightsaber. The suit comes equipped with a variety of gadgets and sensors, including nightvision, a comlink4, 360-degree vision, a grappling hook, and a jetpack. Fett can load the jetpack with powerful missiles to bombard his foes. He even has magnetic gloves that can attract blasters from a short distance.
  • Blaster Pistols. Perhaps Jango's most used weapons are his twin WESTAR blaster pistols. These weapons shoot fairly powerful energy bolts, are lightweight, and are capable of rapid fire, making them deadly.
  • Various weapons. Jango has quite a few armaments, so we'll cover them briefly. He utilizes a flamethrower, poisonous dart shooter, tangling whip, wrist blades, and knockout gas.

Are Jango's skills adequate to defeat his own son?

Bounty Hunter Extras Continued

  • 1. Boba left his wife, Sintas Vel, and child because he had killed a man who had taken advantage of Sintas. To keep the drama secret and protect his wife's privacy, Boba departed, creating the illusion that he simply was unsatisfied with his family.
  • 2. Sarlacc are bizarre creatures that live to be thousands of years old. They are used as a method to cruelly execute prisoners, as they are said to devour their victims over a thousand years. Boba only escapes thanks to his protective armor, and the aid of a fellow bounty hunter.
  • 3. Boba eventually replaces the durasteel armor with a heavier and stronger material, beskar, but we're using his original and better-known suit.
  • 4. Seems pretty silly, but it allows Boba to drink without taking off his helmet. He likes to keep his face hidden, creating an air of mystery and hiding his acne scars.
  • 5. Boba isn't nearly as skilled with the blade as a Jedi, but the laser sword comes in handy as a surprise assault. And let's face it, he looks pretty cool with it.

Boba Fett

As previously mentioned, Boba is an unaltered clone of Jango Fett. The young Boba was raised and instructed by Jango, but Boba's life was shattered when his father died. Alone, he began a bounty hunting career that would culminate in his reputation as the greatest hunter ever. Boba even married and had a daughter, but
he separated from his family soon after1. Boba kept close ties with the Empire, which provided him with many jobs, and even worked for Darth Vader on several occasions. Eventually, the bounty hunter captured Han Solo and delivered him to gangster Jabba the Hutt, but soon afterwards was knocked into the dangerous Sarlacc2.

Eventually, Fett escaped and continued his hunting profession until becoming the leader of the Mandalorians, where his leadership helped rebuild the weakened people. People never admired Fett for charisma; he had almost none. His lack of compassion leaves room for improvement, too. But what Fett can do is win. Whether as head of the Mandalorians, or ruthless bounty hunter, Boba Fett is one of the most feared individuals in the galaxy.

  • Cunning. Few can decide whether Boba's vast arsenal or clever and scheming mind terrifies them more.
  • Combat Training. As a child, Boba was taught how to fight by Jango, and continued to hone his skills throughout his life.

  • Mandalorian Armor. Boba's plates, made of durasteel3, provides defense against blaster fire and forces such as temperature, impact, pressure and even poisons. Boba's helmet provides 360 degree vision, nightvision, and a retractable straw4. Hey, it's convenient. The suit also comes equipped with the latest technology, including a comlink, comlink scrambler, hacking security blades, and a jetpack which may be fitted with powerful missiles.
  • Blaster Rifle. Unlike Jango's dual pistols, Fett prefers a single carbine rifle, which shoots accurate and powerful bursts. It may be fitted with a scope to allow sniping.
  • Various Weapons. Fetts are walking armories, aren't they? Boba's loadout includes a grenade launcher, tangling whip, dart launchers built into his armor's kneecaps, and even occasionally a lightsaber5.

Each combatant will fight in a one-on-one match until one is killed, rendered helpless, or surrenders. Despite being father and son, I imagine our combatants would want to carry this battle out to the bitter end. For our setting, let's take the desert planet where Jango fell—Geonosis.

And The Winner Is...

Jango. Very close call, as both Fetts are capable and armed to the teeth. Jango gets the win for three reasons.

  • First, Boba seems to rely more on cunning; Jango also uses it, but focuses more on force. Thus, in a brawl with no time to prepare, Jango takes the advantage.
  • Second, in Star Wars Episode 6, we see rookie Jedi Luke Skywalker take down Boba very easily, getting him grounded and helpless within seconds. Comparatively, in Episode 2, Jango puts up a much better fight against a more experienced Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
  • Last, as many Expanded Universe fans may know, he once killed six Jedi with nothing but his bare hands.

Geez. I can hardly imagine a Sith capable of killing sex Jedi at once, let alone a bounty hunter. I'll grant that Boba may be a better strategist, but Jango appears to be a superior warrior, and for what it's worth, he seems to have bigger heart forming close bonds with Zam Wesell (admittedly, that didn't end well) and Boba. But for now, as we eagerly await more Mandalorian mayhem from the galaxy far far away, vote for your favorite bounty hunter and I'll see you at our next Star Wars expedition!
