Bollywood in Comparision with Hollywood

Classic Bollywood and Shiney Hollywood

Bollywood vs Hollywood

The purpose of me creating this thread is to discuss the vast difference between the developments in Hollywood and Bollywood. There was once a time when Hollywood had movies with special effects equivalent to what we have now in Bollywood . I still remember the hype YRF had created when Roadside Romeo was ready for release . They boasted of Hollywood type animation but well , it wasn't much of a difference . Though Bollywood has advanced in many phases , this is one field they have yet to cover .

Origions of Bollywood and Hollywood
Bollywood was born in 1899 with the production of a short film and Hollywood’s birth happened 11 years later in 1910 with a Biography melodrama.

Hollywood produces 500 films per year on average and has a worldwide audience of 2.6 billion whereas Bollywood produces more than 1000 (not consistently) films every year and has a worldwide audience of 3 Billion. In terms of vieweship, Bollywood overtook Hollywood in 2004 and has been leading ever since.

Hollywood’s Domination

Bollywood made a revenue of $1.75 Billion in 2006(estimated to rise to $3.4 Billion in 2010) which is only half the revenue of what one Hollywood studio, Walt Disney made in 2006 – and that is saying a lot. However, while Hollywood’s market inside the US has almost saturated, India’s 500 million population under the age of 20 will ensure that the market inside India will grow exponentially in the coming years.

Although Hollywood produces only a fraction of the number of films made all over the world, it garners a staggering 75% of total revenues. Also, 50% of its earnings(expected to grow to 80% in the next 20 years) come from the foreign market whereas for Bollywood it is 20%.

Hollywood has an overwhelming domination among the top grossers worldwide – almost all of the top 50 movies are made in Hollywood. It has virtually eclipsed all other film industries except Bollywood – for instance, the European film industry cut down to 1/10th of its size since 1910.

Bollowood Movies Magic

In Bollywood there is action, drama, emotion, romance, comedy all in one movie, In hollywood you have to see 5 movies.
Actually in the next 10 years hollywood will copy and blend itself to Bollywood style no matter techincal or budget or whatever, now Anil Ambani gives money to Stephen Speilberg to make movie so it doesn't matter.
Moreover In India the canvas is too big.On One end there is Himesh Actor/Singer/Music Director and what not , other end Om Puri/Naseruddin, Songs and Dance Hollywood actors now want to dance around trees with songs, so who is getting inspired.
Very soon you can see hoe it all chnages, Brad Pit will act in a Bhojpuri Film, Tom Cruise in a Tamil Film etc.
Sorry guys Bollywood zindabaad. Ramsay brothers turned in their grave.
RGV created 13 more thrilling horror movies with more chutiya-tomatic schemes to get audiences in.
Producers thinking of hogging their money over re-makes and sequels just with the thought of a Hollywood actor acting in it.

Which Is Better ?

Hollywood is definitely better than Bollywood, no doubt.
Do not stereotype Bollywood or Hollywood.
In certain aspects, Bollywood is better & in certain other aspects, Hollywood wins the race.
But if u talk about the special effects department, no offence, but Bollywood cannot reach the level of Hollywood, not in the next 10 years at least!!
But I rarely watch Hollywood films. So for me, Bollywood is good but yeah, considering we've got all the resources, I don't see why we cannot make films of Hollywood standards.

Our high budget movies are equivalent to their normal movie....

Why, there is a very simple reason, and that we are still not a developed country. We still doesn't have that kind of money and freedom.

well to be honest, the budget of a multi-starrer sci-fi action hollywood flick is 10 times higher than a normal bollywood flick.
Just like u said, bollywood directors may boast about the high budget of their movies but still they are nowhere near as compared to a normal hollywood flick. That might be one of the reasons.
Without any doubt, there's no lack of talent in India, but, difference in the budget, different in choice of audiences might be the reason why most Indian movies are restricted to the romantic/drama genre.

The question arises, Do you really want to see Jim Carrey/Johnny Depp/Nicholas Cage/Any-Random-Hollywood-Actor dancing around the trees?

If the blend has to happen, it must happen with a sense.
Hollywood actors are best in what they do & so are Bollywood stars. Obviously, the comparison is inevitable but is this comparison justified?
Though u can compare "Pyaar Ke Side-Effects" with "My Sassy Girl"
but i cant compare PYSE with "Surrogates".
Bollywood is known around the globe for good romance/love stories.
But Hollywood has set the standards in all the genres, world-wide.
Just like the above example of CC2C or Kambakkht Ishq, Indian makers have to come out of the mind-set, & same is for the audiences here.
Even if someone tries to make a sci-fi movie in India, he/she blends love-story with that sci-fi plot & as a result, the sci-fi plot takes a backseat.

You have the money, you have the audience, to buy the technology and get the get the best script writers and actors is no big deal, so max 10 years, I think the bridge will be gapped and we will be at par with the best. ummmm... plot-wise, Indian makers need to come out of the shell of love-stories.
We have experimented on all sorts of weird concepts in the Romance/love/drama genre & still we are going good. But, we need to come out of this mind-set. Why can't we have more murder mysteries or animations or fantasies or thrillers?
The European Cinema, British & French movies mainly, have been exposed to all these genres years ago. But Bollywood is still waiting for the exposure to happen.
But Bollywood has a stereotypical image world-wide. We need to come out of that image.
The day we break this image, will be the day when u'll see Hollywood stars working side-by-side with Bollywood stars in a sci-fi flick.

Will Smith on his visit to India(around the release of Hancock) said "i desperately want to star in an Indian movie but Bollywood producers cannot afford the concept that i have in my mind"

This is the worst lost I've ever read in my life! Bollywood is nowhere near Hollywood, they are light years behind! Japanese & Hong Kong movies are *million times better than cheap @$$ Bollywood films. Their directors and storywriters are like brainless sheep with no talent or creativity, that's why they rip-off Hollywood movies fo ear, some pocket money. Just google it and you will fond 1000s of examples... Their superstars are cheap Hollywood wanna be knockoff, and how the hell Bollywood got 3.6 billion fans?!?!?! You mean those dead fans from centuries?!

Both bollywood and hollywood produces "Work of Art" and "Art" has no single basis of comparison which is better or worse. the result of which is better depends upon the audience. The best of Bollywood films are romantic, creative , emotional, story-based, feeling-based,

soul-enchanting, musical, classical-based and full of dramatic entertainment targetted for an indian audience who gets social fun out of watching it. whereas the best of hollywood movies are technology based, aweinspiring, wonder struicking, materialistic and mechanized work of art targetted for an audience seeking personal enjoyment.

haha. Bollywood is taking over Hollywood! Dude, get your facts straight. How the hell did you get this 3 billion audience where even in India not everyone watches those movies. and even then it would just make 1 billion. lets add few more countries in southeast asia and say half the people in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh watch these movies still it won't make even 1.5 billion. please see if you can remove your article and save yourself from further embarrassment.

You know what, it was a real surprise for me to read Bollywood taking over Hollywood in revenue making, Ticket sold and annual growth rate etc. etc. but the very fact that Bollywood started before Hollywood yet we some how fell behind in the graphics worries me sometimes. In fact just a thought " Americans got Independence way before we got on the other hand Indians started making movies before Americans did......then why the hell are behind them in both the cases "

I agree that Bollywood has some catching up to do. But when you view Bollywood films, you realize that they still remember what Hollywood has forgotten. They still remember that it is all about fantasy. They remember that the main reason we go to the movies is to escape the sometimes trying circumstances of life. Every Bollywood film I have watched is a cornucopia of amazing experiences that gives you that escape. I cannot say that of Hollywood. Among the shining gems of Hollywood, so much of it is trash. Great script. Maybe excellent cinematography and script-writing. But the themes they pursue are baffling even demeaning or disheartening. I know...the age old argument as to whether art imitates life or life imitates art. But it's not too hard to figure out with Hollywood. The producers, directors, and actors may imagine that they understand the people, but so many times I have sat in a theater chair and realized that they don't. They've lost their grip on reality and lost their grip of what's important in life. Many times I feel that they are mocking me and my humble life, and I have to ask, who are they to question me and my life. They are so soiled with their own pride that they don't even care anymore about the daily lives of normal people and the struggles that most people make daily who do not have limitless bank accounts and teams of sycophants to do their bidding. And in their arrogance and their illusions, they try to force a view of life on us that is distasteful at the least. Too many times, that view is foreign to normal experience -- far more violent, far more sexualized, far more petty. Too often, there is little of the more noble emotions and experiences of normal human life. I love that Bollywood has not succumbed to the koolaid, that they still have their feet firmly in reality, that they still respect and honor the lives and values of those who buy the tickets. Every movie has a moral that is tangible and recognizable, yet they still find a way to lift us out of our mundane experience to the realm of fantasy. They give us struggles that are recognizable, yet set in a fantasy world. And they always leave us uplifted, giving us a denouement that ties everything back to the everyday world. You can leave the theater with an uplifted heart, yet thinking that all things are possible. You can thank talented, inspired people who have respected your values even while pushing the boundaries of disbelief. Hollywood has much to crow about, but Bollywood is catching up fast. And if given a choice, I would always choose a Bollywood film over those of their American step-brothers because, unlike the crap-shoot of Hollywood films, I'm guaranteed an enjoyable evening at the theater. Isn't that what it's all about?

Why are we comparing Bollywood and Hollywood. They are good in their own ways. I totally disagree with the fact that in American cinema there is more freedom. There are a lot of things here that you can't show for example showing nazis in a positive way. As far as Bollywood making fun of Italian or any other cultures, Hollywood is worse any day as they make fun of Chinese, middle eastern, Indian or European cultures and their comedy is so pathetic. I live in America and I have seen the other side of this country. 80% of the American population is equivalent to the BIHARIS we have in India. No country is better than the other, they all have negatives and positives and therefore we should never compare. Hollywood films have began to suck big time now cause they don't have good stories anymore, all u see is animation which at some point looks almost fake. Be proud of Bollywood and don't compare.

you are sir a complete idiot bollywood will never come close to hollywood not in next 100 years. bollywood movies trying too hard to be hollywood and they are making them self look stupid on the screen. hollywood at least makes more than 10 movies year that are creative and unique to its story line, choreography and overall the concepts of there movies are far greater than bollywood. where we have bollywood still struggling to make a decent action movies, forget about "action movies" look at the story line of there movies, most of em with the same concept and that's because of talent-less directors and actors that looks 60 year old whos acting like a 20 year old man. bollywood don't need technologies bollywood needs creativity in there movie and that's how they will gain fame from the world.

I have to say that Bollywood is a whole different thing to Hollywood! Unless you have seen a good mixture of both, it is hard to decide which one is better, but I think that Bollywood has a lot of potential and recently it has been trying to copy Western ideas, which is all good and dandy, but it should not ignore the talent and ideas the country has! Also, Indians need to get a good grip on other societies, as in one of their films they had an Italian character and his portrayal was cringe worthy with his stereotypical accent and it made me feel sad that Bollywood is this bad at portraying other cultures!
