Doctor Who

The Doctor's companion in this second series is Rose Tyler played by Billie Piper. Rose was with the first Doctor last year and Billie Piper continued in the role as Rose alongside the new incarnation.

Synopsis of the First Series

Doctor Who returned to BBC TV in 2005. The Ninth Doctor was played by Christopher Eccleston The Doctor had survived the Time War between his planet Gallifrey and the Daleks. His family and all other Time Lords were killed. He came to earth on Christmas Eve and met a young girl called Rose Tyler.

She was a teenager from a housing estate in London. The Doctor and Rose successfully fought off the aliens who wanted to take over the earth. She then joined him in the TARDIS on his travels. Rose managed to bring back The Doctor’s love of adventure and he began to enjoy his life again. After many exciting encounters with various aliens the Daleks again threatened Earth.

Rose saved the Doctor from the Daleks but in doing she put her own life in danger. The Doctor saved her but this meant that would die instead. Because he is a Time Lord he was able to regenerate into a new human body.

The Tenth Doctor

He re generated into another human body and the actor David Tennant became The Tenth Doctor. This happened in front of Rose in the TARDIS and she became very frightened and confused.

There are 14 episodes on six discs on this Doctor Who DVD Second Series Box Set. Here is a review of everything in the Box Set if you are planning to buy Doctor Who Christmas gifts.

The Christmas Invasion: The 2005 Christmas Special

The TARDIS crash lands on Earth with Rose and the new Doctor aboard. Rose is still confused that The Doctor has changed. Her mother and Mickey arrive and before she can explain the Doctor collapses. They take him to the flat where he lies unconscious. He has not finished re generating yet and cannot help Rose and Mickey fight the aliens.

At first Rose wants her Doctor back because she can not get used to this new man. The Doctor still has his memories of all his previous nine regenerations. Eventually he recovers and saves earth from the invading aliens. Then Rose realises he is still The Doctor that she has been travelling around the galaxy with all the time. So once again Rose Tyler and The Doctor go back into the TARDIS and continue their adventures.

Doctor Who

I bought this Doctor Who box set for the extras that are in it. I have outlined them below so that you can see what you are getting.

David Tennant Video Diaries

David Tennant starts his video diary in his London apartment and explains how nervous he is about being the new Doctor on Doctor Who but that he still can’t wait to get started.

He shows us his new outfit and explains how pleased he is. He brings us on the nine month journey of filming the Doctor Who series and getting to know the other actors and staff.

Billie Piper Video Diaries

Billie Piper also shoots her own video diary in this series. We get to know her as an actor and see her interacting with David Tennant on the set of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who Confidential

There are many of the Doctor Who Confidential shows on the box set too. We see how they produce the special effects and hear from the writers and producers.

Deleted Scenes

These are always nice to see because a lot of scenes are cut out in order to fit in with the time restrictions of the show on BBC TV. There is a lovely deleted scene in the episode Army of Ghosts. At the very beginning we see the TARDIS landing at Rose’s housing estate as the Doctor and Rose are on a visit to her mother.

The deleted scene is as they come out of the TARDIS and walk towards the flat. Both The Doctor and Rose are happy and laughing as they head over to the flat. There is a very shortened version that was broadcast but this scene is nice and a shame they had to cut it.

Outtakes

The actors mistakes as they film the scenes are always worth watching and gives everyone a laugh.

Children in Need BBC

This scene is about seven minutes long and was made especially for the Children in Need show. It takes place in the TARDIS and we see The Doctor still re generating and the reaction of Rose. This is an excellent scene and one of my favourites.

Introduction to Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures

Torchwood is a new Doctor Who spin-off series with John Barrowman as Captain Jack. This new series is strictly adults only.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is a new Doctor Who spin-off series and is aimed at a very young audience.

      Hello Nell

Yes I've just watched the new episode now myself, It was great as usual. The poor kids will be terrified.

Any new actor in the role of The Doctor does take getting used to I agree. But I like Matt Smith. I was worried the actor was too young to play the Doctor but he has pulled it off. I love Karen and Arthur as his new companions Amy and Rory.

      .

I do prefer Steven Moffet as the head writer though. He wrote the older episodes Silence in the Library, Blink and The Doctor dances, all my favourites.

Yes I saw the Prom special of Doctor Who. I love classical music and have it on all the time when I am writing. The music from Doctor Who is special especially the theme tunes for each Doctor and his companions.

But this was great for the kids. Did you see their faces when all the Cybermen came out amongst the audience. One poor kid was terrified, his face was classic!

Hi, this was great! I am such a Doctor Who fan! I don't like this new one, Matt Smith, i'm not sure if its the man himself or the new writer, both seem to be too childish and the story lines are rubbish, saying that I am just about to go watch it! lol have you seen the wonderful london orchestra Doctor Who special? it is fantastic! specially the one with David Tennant, the audience get to see all the daleks and cyber men walking around the room, the music is out of this world, and it has clips from the series, if you haven't seen it, you should go check it out, brilliant! great review, i wish he was still the Doctor!
