Buy Inception Totems

Updated on April 27, 2012

In the movie Inception the totem is used as a tool for the stars to know if they were still in a dream. It is an ordinary object modified in such a way that it would behave differently, but this new behavior would only be known to the owner.

If you've liked inception so much that you've gone out and purchased the movie on dvd or blu ray to watch it all over again, then you might want to read about the totems here.

Cobb's Top

Update: It looks like Amazon is stocking the promotional inception top for about a bit more than a dozen dollars.

Update: The limited edition Inception Blu Ray briefcase set comes along with an official spinning top! Although a bit pricey at $80, it depends on whether you want to get your hands on the tops as well as some extra stuff.

Currently some entrepreneurs appear to be cashing in on the movie and making metal spinning tops for sale at rather high prices. Cobb's totem is of course something that most people would want to have, being featured rather prominently at the end of the show... It is no wonder that people will pay 30 to 50 dollars just to obtain a replica of such an ingenious and elegant metal spinning top. There are also bona fide replicas released in accordance with promotional events, and those could well fetch far more!

How to make Arthur's Totem

Arthur, as the point man, has a loaded dice (or weighted die) signaling his job in trying to lock down as many variables as possible that could possibly go wrong. Its a good fit and his totem is probably one of the easiest ones to obtain. You could go to Amazon and hunt for an already pre loaded dice that usually comes in packs of 6 each for a particular load so that you would rig the outcome of the die or you could just buy a medium size red transparent dice available for sale and hollow out a few parts so that you would be loading it. It would be a nicer touch to, as by making your own loading you make it your own totem.

Ariadne Inception Totem Chess Piece

Ariadne uses a shiny yellow tinted metal Bishop chess piece, the exact material used is unclear. Some people happen to think the piece is made of gold, but it would be a bit too expensive if so.

Brass or Bronze might be a possible candidate. To make one of your own the easiest way is to probably buy a metal chess set and take one piece out from it and hollow certain parts inside so it would have a certain weight that is unique to it and you.

Eames probably uses a poker chip that has been modified somehow, perhaps on its face or weight.

Eames

Eames uses a poker chip as his inception totem, no details have been furnished at the time of writing as to how exactly it works. A possible way would be that of a typical weighted coin, which lands only on one side. A brief glimpse of his totem is shown in the movie when Cobb comments about it in his search to fill up the role of "The Forger" and he finds him trying to pull off another round of deceit and illusions
