Can Men Really be 'Feminists' and if so why can a White Woman not call herself a 'Womanist'?
So you’ve heard the hype, many male celebrities consider themselves to be ‘feminists’, stating that they believe in gender equality. Both Patrick Stewart and Joseph Gorden-Levitt consider themselves to be feminists, but can a man really be a feminist?
Many would argue against the appropriation of men with feminism, charting history and women’s struggles against the oppression created by men as reasons not to allow men to call themselves feminists. But oops it’s too late, they already are. And what of it. If a man wants to fight in the corner of women and he loves women enough to call himself a feminist than I say why not. The more ‘feminists’ we have on our team the better.
But if men can call themselves ‘feminists’ why can white women not call themselves ‘womanists’, afterall the early white feminists who equally oppressed black women have no relation to white feminists today wanting to fight in the corner of black feminists or ‘womanists’, so why can they not call themselves ‘womanists’? This is a very touchy subject and it is important to tread acrefully when discussing, but as far as I know white feminists are only allowed to call themselves ‘allies’ of womanists, and not actual ‘womanists’. Now I know that these are just labels that one can identify with or not, but if a man is allowed to call himself a feminist, I don’t understand why a white woman who is fighting the cause of black feminists or womanists cannot call herself a womanist as well.
