Carly Rae Jepsen
The first song I chose is a very popular song that almost everyone has heard at least one time in their life. I chose “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen. This song is a very catchy and famous song. The more I listen to it, the more I realize how repetitive it actually is. It would definitely be under the “3 minute pop song” category and not just because it is only 3 minutes long. When you hear this song, you can tell that the point of creating this song was for it to be played on the radio because it is short, upbeat and catchy. I personally do not know Carly Rae Jepsen but I am sure she wanted this song to be played on the radio when she was writing it. As I listen to the song over and over again, I realize how short the verses really are. The lyrics in this song are not very good or clever. It feels as if she knew that the chorus was really catchy and tried to make the verses really short so the listener can hear the chorus and be reeled in. This is probably the reason why a lot of young people and people who do not know a lot about music enjoy this song. I am not one of these people, but I am sure people who know a lot about music do not enjoy listening to this song very much because of the structure of the song.
The second song that I chose for this song is also very popular song and it is actually by the same artist. I chose “Good Time” by Carly Rae Jepsen feat. Owl City. This is also a very upbeat and catchy song by the same artist, so I figured they would have pretty similar musical structure. I listened to it a few times and had a hard time finding some similarities. The more I listened to it, the more I felt like this song is also very repetitive. It is very clear that this song was also created to be on the radio and to get stuck in the listener's’ head. The chorus of this song is also very catchy and they sing it 3 times in the song. Even when they arent singing the chorus, the music is obviously building up for it. The reason being that the chorus is the part that the listener is going to get stuck in their head and remember.
I am not a composer and I really do not know much about music but I feel as if composer like the structure of these songs. These songs are very simple and repetitive. I imagine that because of how simple these song are, they are probably very easy to write. I am sure that there is still a lot of effort that goes into making them but once they find a good chorus, the rest seems to come very easily. As for the listener, I feel as though the song is very catchy and most them enjoy it when they hear it. The problem is, these songs are very repetitive. Due to the fact that they are very catchy, they are played on the radio a lot and because they are very repetitive, they become very annoying. The listener enjoys this structure of music for the first couple of months but then gets sick of it very quickly. I also feel like this type of structure does limit the creativity of the artist. Because these songs are so repetitive, focused so much on the chorus and created for the radio, it doesnt allow the composers to really be creative and express themselves.
