Carol Burnett-A very Funny Lady!
I like a good laugh. Comedy, especially in the slapstick field, is my favorite. Maybe I am old school, but I prefer the comedy from the past. They were well made and provided hours of fun. Carol Burnett is no exception. She is an outstanding actor in the field of comedy! Aside from Lucille Ball, who I consider the Queen of Comedy, she does not lag behind. To me, in the line of royalty, she is a Princess. A Princess who can bring a smile to your face and make you forget your troubles.
Many may not know that Carol Burnett is, also, an accomplished writer. She wrote a well-known book called-- "What I want to be when I grow up." She, also, wrote a play together with her daughter Carrie called Hollywood Arms. She, also, is a great drama actor. I will, always, remember her as the grieved mother in the movie "Friendly Fire!" Truly, a talent in her own right.
Carol Burnett starred in many shows. Maybe I am showing my age, but she had a minor role in the Winchell and Mahoney show in 1955. She, also, starred with Buddy Hackett in the sitcom Stanley (1956-1957). Once upon a mattress--which was a Broadway musical, brought her more recognition and was nominated for a Tony Award.
Then came more star appearances. Starring in the Gary Moore show, she played the part of a cleaning lady which would become her signature trademark. Then came another role in a well-known TV series. Believe it or not, Carol appeared in the Twilight Zone in an episode called Cavender is coming. This was an exceptional Twilight Zone episode because it had some funny moments.
This episode involved a clumsy lady named Agnes, who couldn't do anything right. An angel from heaven was sent to help her and in the process earn his wings. Contacting her, he started to change her bad fortune. First, she got some money in her checking account. Second, she moved to a classy and flashy neighborhood named Morgan Mansion.
Even though Agnes had these things, she was not happy. Begging the angel to bring back her bad fortune, she found the lesson that not everything that glitters is gold. The angel, reluctantly, gets her back to her former status, but the story has a happy ending. The angel winds up doing good because now Agnes is happy and his superiors take notice. A very funny Twilight zone episode, I might add. You can see this classic episode on the link provided below.
Other roles would feature her with Don Adams in Get Smart. In the episode entitled --"One of our olives is missing," Carol would portray a Southern Belle Country Star by the name of Ozark Annie. This was a funny episode in which she swallowed a olive with a transistor receiver. Maxwell Smart would try to help her with this dilemma and what followed was a series of hilarious scenes.
If you are not a Get Smart fan, you will be! Carol Burnett and Don Adams outdid themselves in this one. If you want to have a good laugh, this episode will leave you satisfied. She, also, appeared with Jim Nabors on his Gomer Pyle series. It was during this time that Carol developed a friendship with Jim. Nabors would appear on some of her shows. She was best friends with Lucille Ball, who mentored her. Their friendship would last until Lucille Ball's death.
The Carol Burnett Show!
In 1967, Carol Burnett would host a variety show. It would last 11 years and win various Emmy awards. Her show is still on syndication on some TV channels. Listing the likes of Tim Conway and Harvey Korman, this show provides great entertainment and laughter. I have enclosed one of my favorites below which is Wrong number. Carol and Tim are classic in this one and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Also, Vickie Lawrence and her did Mama's Family, which resulted in a hit series.
A Legend in her own right!
In my opinion, Carol Burnett will, also, remain a Legend in her own right. I have laughed long and hard at some of her antics. Good clean comedy is hard to find, but Carol aims to please. I think that through the years, Carol will, always, remain a star in comedy. She, recently, guest starred in a dramatic role in Law and Order. I am not much of a fan of that series, but my wife is and she said that Carol did a great job in that episode. Whether drama, writing or comedy, Carol does it all. God bless you, Carol Burnett!
