Cat Lovers Are a Breed Apart

Give me a random cat and a random human and I'll tell you exactly which one I'd prefer to spend time with. We cat ladies and cat dudes are a special breed of "purr-son." Call us unusual, eccentric, or even a little nuts. No matter. We just love the quiet confidence and companionship of our cats.

Cat people eagerly strike up conversations with complete strangers over Lula's latest escapades or Mr. Twinkles' medical saga. We share our homes, our hearts, our beds, and yes, even our dinners with these intuitive four-legged divas. And we'll often go to great lengths to please and protect them.

Celebrate Your Love of Felines

Case in point: I've taken a cat right out of the arms of an animal control officer who arrived at a parking lot to pick up a stray cat in trouble. I told him that no, I was adopting that one.

Rather than being carted off to the Big House that day with no chance of parole (it's a kill shelter), that Kitty quickly came home with me, loose in my car. Desperate times call for desperate measures. (Yeah, it's probably good that I got married long before my love of cats took center stage.)

Whether you have two cats or 10, you can celebrate your affinity for frisky felines with your own cat lover's play list. Here is a list of pop, rock, and country song selections to help get you started.

As a babe, Sarah was abandoned in a grocery store parking lot on a hot summer day. She was dehydrated and near death. Now she lives with my mother, all grown up and happy.

Enough Already with the Stereotypes

Naysayers may depict cat dudes and ladies as lonely, unfashionable, and friendless. They particularly paint cat ladies as single older women who ride around with half-used bags of Meow Mix in their trunks feeding strays. They depict us as spending money we don't have spaying and neutering cats we don't know.

Well, I say enough already with those pesky stereotypes. A person could be toting worse cargo. And who couldn't use a good neutering? So, cat lovers, snuggle up with your feline friends, pull up your Hello Kitty knee socks, and have a little fun with the stereotype as you enjoy some good music.

Celine Dion Looks Sad. Does She Need a Cat?

1. "All By Myself" by Celine Dion

This power ballad by Celine Dion (1996) is a remake of an old favorite by Eric Carmen. It reminds cat people that sometimes a little human contact won't hurt, especially if they, too, enjoy cats.

Hard to be sure
Some times I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
Remains the cure.

All by myself
Don't want to be all by myself anymore
All by myself
Don't want to live all by myself anymore.

2. "Super Freak" by Rick James

"She really loves cats. I mean Really. Loves. Cats." If your new boyfriend has to describe you this way, then perhaps this 1981 song by Rick James may be appropriate. Just roll with it.

Love Me, Love My Cats

3. "Another Saturday Night" by Cat Stevens

Maybe you're a cat-loving dude who finds himself at home on Saturday nights in the company of your cats while others go out on the town prowling. If so, then Mr. Lonesome Tomcat, you can identify with this 1963 song by Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens—how purrfect is that!?!).

Another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody,
I have some money 'cause I just got paid.
How I wish I had someone to talk to,
I'm in an awful way.

4. "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass

Every cat lover knows that when you rescue a cat, there's no question the cat rescues you back.

Years ago, I rescued a beautiful tortie feral kitten who nearly lost her eye to complications from an upper respiratory infection. I nursed her back to health and spent so much on a veterinary eye specialist that I lovingly called Little Speedy my "money cat."

Several years later I developed optic neuritis, a very painful eye condition that left me temporarily temporarily blind in one eye. (It was a painful complication of Multiple Sclerosis lasting several months.) Little Speedy stuck my side the entire time, unwavering.

This song by Fontella Bass (1965) is a tribute to Little Speedy and all the feline heroes like her:

Rescue me
Oh take me in your arms
Rescue me
I want your tender charms
'Coz I'm lonely and I'm blue
I need you and your love too.

5. "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" by Stevie Wonder

Cat lovers know that when they adopt a cat it's a lifelong "fur-ever" commitment. Stevie Wonder commemorates that bond of companionship and love in this 1970 classic.

6. "Stray Cat Strut" by The Stray Cats

This 1980s rockabilly band was called The Stray Cats, and in 1981 they released this single that paid homage to alley cats, who get their meals wherever they can find them and often find themselves in fisticuffs with other strays. Feed the ferals, and fix them too!

Cats: They Cheat Too

7. "You Belong To Me" by Carly Simon

Like people, some cats spend time on the down low at the neighbors' house, believing you won't find out their secret. Missing collars, weight gain, spending more time away from home ... those are tell-tale signs that your cat has been steppin' out.

If you have a cat like I do who enjoys sharing two homes, this 1978 song by Carly Simon can help you sing your sorrows until Kitty returns:

You don't have to prove to me
That you're beautiful to strangers
Well I've got lovin' eyes of my own, my own.

8. "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" by Frankie Valli

From the tickle of their whiskers to their outstretched paws, what animal could possibly be more beautiful to behold than a cat? Pay homage to the grace and beauty of your feline friends with this 1967 pop song by Frankie Valli.

9. "You Really Got A Hold On Me" by The Miracles

Not all cats are well behaved, but somehow cat people still put up with their misdeeds. When I was a child, our family took in a pesky white stray that we named Snowball Pete after the ice cream man.

Snowball Pete enjoyed hiding behind corners so he could jump out at my mother and bite her legs hard, kicking at her with all fours. He'd also hop up on the kitchen table at breakfast to steal the bacon before all of us kids could arrive to the table. Fun times!

If you can't help but loving a cat like Snowball Pete, then you'll identify with these 1962 lyrics by The Miracles:

I don't like you, but I love you
Seems that I'm always thinkin' of you
Though you treat me badly, I love you madly
You've really got a hold on me.

Make Every Day A Caturday

10. "Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion

In this 1996 pop song, Celine Dion thanks someone special for their love, support and encouragement. Could she be sending a shout-out to a dear feline in her life? Cat lovers know that there's no one who listens to problems quite like Kitty.

Cat Convention: Meeting Of the Minds

11. "What's New Pussycat" by Tom Jones

It's hard to believe that women ever tolerated Tom Jones or any man calling them "pussycat" without some severe scratches to his face or bites to his nether regions. However, you do have to admit that the 1965 song is catchy. Sing it to your cat and she probably won't mind.

Friends don't eat friends.

12. "Lean On Me" by Bill Withers

Bill Withers (1972) knows that there's no one quite like a cat to lend support and friendship, in good times and bad:

Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on.

Hey, Cat Lady! Looks like the Word Is Out

13. "You've Got A Friend" by James Taylor

In this 1971 classic, James Taylor seems to understand the reliability and companionship that only a cat can provide. If you're sad, cats will help you binge watch episodes of CSI while you stuff your face with Oreos and get a good caffeine buzz off Dr. Pepper. Then Kitty will help you follow it up with a three-hour nap. Who else would do that for you?

When you're down and troubled
And you need a helping hand
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night.

Smitten with His Kitten

14. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by The Tokens

At the heart of every house cat is a fierce lion. His jungle may only be your living room, but he utterly the king of it. This 1961 song by The Tokens captures the royalty that is cats large and small.

15. "Maneater" by Hall & Oates

This 1982 Hall & Oates song refers to an untamed "she-cat" who will "chew you up" and "really rip your world apart." The song duo seems suspiciously familiar with feral cats. Could they be cat dudes?

16. "Missing You" by Tyler Hilton

Tyler Hilton (2012) knows that there's nothing worse than a loved one who has left you or gone missing:

Every time I think of you
I always catch my breath
And I'm still standing here and you're miles away

And I wonder why you left
And there's a storm that's raging
Through my frozen heart tonight.

Cat whiskers should never be trimmed. Cats use them for several key purposes: navigation, expressing his or her mood, and assessing whether the cat can fit through an opening.

17. "Dear Future Husband" by Meghan Trainor

All I have to say about this song by Meghan Trainor (2014) is "Dear Future Husband, Marry me, marry my cats." As if the cat eye make-up and leopard print bustier didn't give it away already!

18. "Baby Come Back" by Player

This 1977 song by Player captures the heartbreak and desperation of wanting a loved one who has gone away to return. Even while you try to go about your normal routine, you may find yourself obsessing about if and when they'll return.

If you've lost your cat, look everywhere for him or her and don't give up. They tend to stick close to home and may be hiding or stuck in a neighbor's shed or crawl space. Offer rewards, hang flyers, and talk with your neighbors. Check your local animal shelters repeatedly. Don't just call; go there to look for your cat. Also, consider microchipping as a preventive measure.

Cats sleep from 12-20 hours a day, primarily in the form of brief naps. They experience REM, suggesting they do dream.

19. "Lazy Song" by Bruno Mars

You must have respect for an animal who sleeps an average of 15 hours a day and doesn't feel guilty about it. In this 2011 song, Bruno Mars downshifts and adopts the cool cat lifestyle, at least for the day. We could all afford to do that from time-to-time.

This is one of my cats, Stella, rescued from a paper mill that was closing. She was fearful and dirty gray at the time, but she cleaned up beautifully. She is such a good friend.

20. "Thank You For Being A Friend" by Andrew Gold

The close relationship between cat and cat lover is beautifully reflected in this 1978 song by Andrew Gold:

Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down the road and back again
Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidante.

21. "Diva" by Beyoncé Knowles

Even when you take cats off the street and set them up in a cushy home, you can't forget that they're carrying weapons: razor-sharp claws and teeth.

This song by Beyoncé Knowles (2009) is edgy and street-wise, just like cats and those who must bow down to them.

22. "Royals" by Lorde

Most of us can never hope to be royalty, but thanks to our cats we can rub whiskers with nobility every day. Pay homage to their blue blood and your lack of it with this 2013 song by Lorde.

Know the Difference Between Love and Hoarding

People who hoard pets -- often cats because of their small size -- collect dozens or even hundreds of animals. They may confine them inside or outside. Their original intent is typically to help the animals. However, rescue situations can quickly mushroom out of control, especially when cats are not spayed and neutered.

Unfortunately, rather than providing safe shelter, people who hoard animals can neither properly care for their pets' medical and nutritional needs nor attend to their animals' personal care requirements. As a sad result, the unclean conditions of hoarding poses a danger to both humans and animals involved.

If you suspect hoarding, don't look the other way. Report the situation to your local police, humane society, and/or animal control. Do so anonymously, if needed. Lives depend on YOU doing the right thing.

What a great bunch of song choices. I have always been partial to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." It's one of the "oldies" from my growing up years.

Your list of cat expressions is great, as well (though you've duplicated #6 with #9.) I've heard that expression as "Nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs." Some cats don't have much of a tail, (American Bobtail, for example) or none at all (Manx). They'd probably be safe in the presence of rocking chairs. LOL

What a lot of work you had to do to come up with all those great videos. Bookmarked to watch them all now and then at leisure.

      Voted up, funny, and interesting.

Flourish, I love your frisky feline featured songs, but Celine Dion has a has a female Labrador called Charlie. I have allergies and cannot have a cat, we do have a visiting one that belongs to a neighbor that comes around at 9 pm every night. He is big and solid black and he is so handsome. I worry about him on Halloween and when I hear the coyote howl.

A great collection of songs dedicated to our furry feline friends Flourish....say that 5 times fast :) Halfway through I was going to say you missed out "year of the Cat" and "cat's in the Cradle" but then you covered them under "Even More Songs Dedicated to Cat Lovers." One other saying is "Not enough room to swing a cat" for a tiny room etc. not that's very nice and I wouldn't try to swing any of my four cats anyway. Great hub, good collection of songs too. Voted up.

OMG! You made my day with this fabulous and funny hub:) I can tell that many a cat is lucky to have you in its life. I have to say that Stella just won my heart- what a cutie! The picture of the fat cats having a board meeting is priceless- "Man Eater" - haha. I'm STILL smiling! Thanks for the treat!

Linda - I love them as much as I do most people if you know what I mean. They sure don't pretend; you know what you're getting even if it's difficult. Cats can turn even the hardest of hearts. I've seen it before. People who say they don't like cats just haven't met one determined enough to change their mind.

MsDora - They have told me secrets no one else knows, and I, them. We have a certain connection. And I find that as long as someone values cats, I can find something good about them no matter how different they are from me. Thanks for stopping by my cat hub. I'm going to give cats a rest and turn to other subjects after this!

Flourish, your understanding of cats and your ability to relate the lyrics, make this article a cut above the rest, in my opinion. I really like it.

Cats are cool. These songs are too!

I want to sing them in Kathmandu.

Love the Super Freaky photos and the way you tied in the celebs with the songs. One of my favorites is Cat Stevens.

I didn't see "Cats in the Cradle", Harry Chapin, also a favorite.

Patricia - Definitely been there. I currently have a "retirement home" for unadoptables who are living out there golden years. Of course, a couple neighborhood strays whose owners had abandoned them volunteered to keep them company. We try to neuter the world. Thanks for the share, comment, and up vote. Have a wonderful week.

What a great job Flourish! It must've taken you hours to round up all those songs and great pictures.

Like Bill, I was never a cat person but then my daughter left her Persian, Pebbles, with us and I was a goner. I loved that cat and she loved me. They do have a way of getting under your skin.

Voted up, useful, funny, and interesting.

Faith Reaper - Thank you for your kind thoughts and for voting, sharing. Those Georges know they are gorgeous. They just cannot help it. Mine was a walk up and we assume someone abandoned him, moved and left him behind. He settled in quickly. In the summer he gets shaved bald and looks hilarious, but in the heat he enjoys it. I get embarrassed for him, especially because it looks so funny around the back end.

You have found the purr-fect videos too. That one about the future husband is too cool.

You have outdone yourself once again. What a way to end this hub with that last photo : )

I'll be honest, I have never been a cat person. I love animals but man alive, they can sure be obstinate and finicky. Having said that, Bev came home with a tabby last year, and wouldn't you know it, I fell in love with the damned thing. She drapes herself on my shoulder at night and purrs so sweetly. Of course, I know she just loves me because I feed her but still, it is too sweet to ignore. LOL
