Ultimate Cat Lover's Playlist: 34 Songs About Cats and the People Who Can't Live Without Them
Cat Lovers Are a Breed Apart
Give me a random cat and a random human and I'll tell you exactly which one I'd prefer to spend time with. We cat ladies and cat dudes are a special breed of "purr-son." Call us unusual, eccentric, or even a little nuts. No matter. We just love the quiet confidence and companionship of our cats.
Cat people eagerly strike up conversations with complete strangers over Lula's latest escapades or Mr. Twinkles' medical saga. We share our homes, our hearts, our beds, and yes, even our dinners with these intuitive four-legged divas. And we'll often go to great lengths to please and protect them.
Be "purrfectly" honest. Would you rather keep company with a random cat or a random person for the day?
Celebrate Your Love of Felines
Case in point: I've taken a cat right out of the arms of an animal control officer who arrived at a parking lot to pick up a stray cat in trouble. I told him that no, I was adopting that one.
Rather than being carted off to the Big House that day with no chance of parole (it's a kill shelter), that Kitty quickly came home with me, loose in my car. Desperate times call for desperate measures. (Yeah, it's probably good that I got married long before my love of cats took center stage.)
Whether you have two cats or 10, you can celebrate your affinity for frisky felines with your own cat lover's play list. Here is a list of pop, rock, and country song selections to help get you started.
Enough Already with the Stereotypes
Naysayers may depict cat dudes and ladies as lonely, unfashionable, and friendless. They particularly paint cat ladies as single older women who ride around with half-used bags of Meow Mix in their trunks feeding strays. They depict us as spending money we don't have spaying and neutering cats we don't know.
Well, I say enough already with those pesky stereotypes. A person could be toting worse cargo. And who couldn't use a good neutering? So, cat lovers, snuggle up with your feline friends, pull up your , and have a little fun with the stereotype as you enjoy some good music. Hello Kitty knee socks
Celine Dion Looks Sad. Does She Need a Cat?
1. "All By Myself" by Celine Dion
This power ballad by Celine Dion (1996) is a remake of an old favorite by Eric Carmen. It reminds cat people that sometimes a little human contact won't hurt, especially if they, too, enjoy cats.
Hard to be sure
Some times I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
Remains the cure.
All by myself
Don't want to be all by myself anymore
All by myself
Don't want to live all by myself anymore.
2. "Super Freak" by Rick James
"She really loves cats. I mean Really. Loves. Cats." If your new boyfriend has to describe you this way, then perhaps this 1981 song by Rick James may be appropriate. Just roll with it.
3. "Another Saturday Night" by Cat Stevens
Maybe you're a cat-loving dude who finds himself at home on Saturday nights in the company of your cats while others go out on the town prowling. If so, then Mr. Lonesome Tomcat, you can identify with this 1963 song by Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens—how purrfect is that!?!).
Another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody,
I have some money 'cause I just got paid.
How I wish I had someone to talk to,
I'm in an awful way.
4. "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass
Every cat lover knows that when you rescue a cat, there's no question the cat rescues you back.
Years ago, I rescued a beautiful tortie feral kitten who nearly lost her eye to complications from an upper respiratory infection. I nursed her back to health and spent so much on a veterinary eye specialist that I lovingly called Little Speedy my "money cat."
Several years later I developed optic neuritis, a very painful eye condition that left me temporarily temporarily blind in one eye. (It was a painful complication of Multiple Sclerosis lasting several months.) Little Speedy stuck my side the entire time, unwavering.
This song by Fontella Bass (1965) is a tribute to Little Speedy and all the feline heroes like her:
Oh take me in your arms
I want your tender charms
'Coz I'm lonely and I'm blue
I need you and your love too.
Love Me, Love My Cats
5. "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" by Stevie Wonder
Cat lovers know that when they adopt a cat it's a lifelong "fur-ever" commitment. Stevie Wonder commemorates that bond of companionship and love in this 1970 classic.
6. "Stray Cat Strut" by The Stray Cats
This 1980s rockabilly band was called The Stray Cats, and in 1981 they released this single that paid homage to alley cats, who get their meals wherever they can find them and often find themselves in fisticuffs with other strays. Feed the ferals, and fix them too!
7. "You Belong To Me" by Carly Simon
Like people, some cats spend time on the down low at the neighbors' house, believing you won't find out their secret. Missing collars, weight gain, spending more time away from home ... those are tell-tale signs that your cat has been steppin' out.
If you have a cat like I do who enjoys sharing two homes, this 1978 song by Carly Simon can help you sing your sorrows until Kitty returns:
You don't have to prove to me
That you're beautiful to strangers
Well I've got lovin' eyes of my own, my own.
Hello Kitty Purse: Be Cat Lady Chic
Be a super stylin' cat lovin' lady in this fabulous Hello Kitty handbag. In the main compartment, you can put an umbrella, a wallet, a couple of cans of Nine Lives and you're good to go. You never know when you'll see a hungry kitty who needs a good meal! Look awesome while you are helping catkind!
Cats: They Cheat Too
8. "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" by Frankie Valli
From the tickle of their whiskers to their outstretched paws, what animal could possibly be more beautiful to behold than a cat? Pay homage to the grace and beauty of your feline friends with this 1967 pop song by Frankie Valli.
Pull up a Pillow and Talk to Mama
9. "You Really Got A Hold On Me" by The Miracles
Not all cats are well behaved, but somehow cat people still put up with their misdeeds. When I was a child, our family took in a pesky white stray that we named Snowball Pete after the ice cream man.
Snowball Pete enjoyed hiding behind corners so he could jump out at my mother and bite her legs hard, kicking at her with all fours. He'd also hop up on the kitchen table at breakfast to steal the bacon before all of us kids could arrive to the table. Fun times!
If you can't help but loving a cat like Snowball Pete, then you'll identify with these 1962 lyrics by The Miracles:
I don't like you, but I love you
Seems that I'm always thinkin' of you
Though you treat me badly, I love you madly
You've really got a hold on me.
10. "Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion
In this 1996 pop song, Celine Dion thanks someone special for their love, support and encouragement. Could she be sending a shout-out to a dear feline in her life? Cat lovers know that there's no one who listens to problems quite like Kitty.
Cat Convention: Meeting Of the Minds
11. "What's New Pussycat" by Tom Jones
It's hard to believe that women ever tolerated Tom Jones or any man calling them "pussycat" without some severe scratches to his face or bites to his nether regions. However, you do have to admit that the 1965 song is catchy. Sing it to your cat and she probably won't mind.
12. "Lean On Me" by Bill Withers
Bill Withers (1972) knows that there's no one quite like a cat to lend support and friendship, in good times and bad:
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on.
Hey, Cat Lady! Looks like the Word Is Out
13. "You've Got A Friend" by James Taylor
In this 1971 classic, James Taylor seems to understand the reliability and companionship that only a cat can provide. If you're sad, cats will help you binge watch episodes of CSI while you stuff your face with Oreos and get a good caffeine buzz off Dr. Pepper. Then Kitty will help you follow it up with a three-hour nap. Who else would do that for you?
When you're down and troubled
And you need a helping hand
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night.
14. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by The Tokens
At the heart of every house cat is a fierce lion. His jungle may only be your living room, but he utterly the king of it. This 1961 song by The Tokens captures the royalty that is cats large and small.
15. "Maneater" by Hall & Oates
This 1982 Hall & Oates song refers to an untamed "she-cat" who will "chew you up" and "really rip your world apart." The song duo seems suspiciously familiar with feral cats. Could they be cat dudes?
16. "Missing You" by Tyler Hilton
Tyler Hilton (2012) knows that there's nothing worse than a loved one who has left you or gone missing:
Every time I think of you
I always catch my breath
And I'm still standing here and you're miles away
And I wonder why you left
And there's a storm that's raging
Through my frozen heart tonight.
17. "Dear Future Husband" by Meghan Trainor
All I have to say about this song by Meghan Trainor (2014) is "Dear Future Husband, Marry me, marry my cats." As if the cat eye make-up and leopard print bustier didn't give it away already!
18. "Baby Come Back" by Player
This 1977 song by Player captures the heartbreak and desperation of wanting a loved one who has gone away to return. Even while you try to go about your normal routine, you may find yourself obsessing about if and when they'll return.
If you've lost your cat, look everywhere for him or her and don't give up. They tend to stick close to home and may be hiding or stuck in a neighbor's shed or crawl space. Offer rewards, hang flyers, and talk with your neighbors. Check your local animal shelters repeatedly. Don't just call; go there to look for your cat. Also, consider microchipping as a preventive measure.
19. "Lazy Song" by Bruno Mars
You must have respect for an animal who sleeps an average of 15 hours a day and doesn't feel guilty about it. In this 2011 song, Bruno Mars downshifts and adopts the cool cat lifestyle, at least for the day. We could all afford to do that from time-to-time.
20. "Thank You For Being A Friend" by Andrew Gold
The close relationship between cat and cat lover is beautifully reflected in this 1978 song by Andrew Gold:
Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down the road and back again
Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidante.
Smitten with His Kitten
21. "Diva" by Beyoncé Knowles
Even when you take cats off the street and set them up in a cushy home, you can't forget that they're carrying weapons: razor-sharp claws and teeth.
This song by Beyoncé Knowles (2009) is edgy and street-wise, just like cats and those who must bow down to them.
Time to Call in Technical Support
22. "Royals" by Lorde
Most of us can never hope to be royalty, but thanks to our cats we can rub whiskers with nobility every day. Pay homage to their blue blood and your lack of it with this 2013 song by Lorde.

Know the Difference Between Love and Hoarding
People who hoard pets -- often cats because of their small size -- collect dozens or even hundreds of animals. They may confine them inside or outside. Their original intent is typically to help the animals. However, rescue situations can quickly mushroom out of control, especially when cats are not spayed and neutered.
Unfortunately, rather than providing safe shelter, people who hoard animals can neither properly care for their pets' medical and nutritional needs nor attend to their animals' personal care requirements. As a sad result, the unclean conditions of hoarding poses a danger to both humans and animals involved.
If you suspect hoarding, don't look the other way. Report the situation to your local police, humane society, and/or animal control. Do so anonymously, if needed. Lives depend on YOU doing the right thing.
