Celebrate Valentine's Day With a Bit of Cartoon Nastalgia

Arthur is an avid television and movie fan with horror being his favored genre. If you can name it, he has probably seen it. Twice.

I think we all can agree that Valentine's Day is a consumer holiday. Who out there can even tell me the story of St. Valentine? Just because it is a day meant to sell chocolates and flowers doesn't mean that it can't be a day we all enjoy. If you want to take a trip down memory lane or find something fun for your kids this February 14th check out these great Valentine's Day cartoons.

A Special Valentine with The Family Circus

I love these old Sunday comic cartoons that were popular in the '70s and '80s. This one is an adorable story about the Family Circus kids learning about Valentine's Day and making Valentine's cards for their dad. When the older kids make fun of P.J.'s picture he runs away and the kids' mission changes. The older kids now have to find P.J. and make it up to him with his own super-sized valentine to give to his dad. In the end P.J. decides that his original drawing is a gift from the heart, and the kids all learn an important lesson.

For Better or for Worse: A Valentine from the Heart

As with any family, there is a lot going on here. After the school Valentine's dance gets canceled Michael asks his parents to have it at their house instead. Elizabeth is busy making her own perfect valentine for her skating team's contest and growing up at the same time. Both Michael and Elizabeth have encounters with a boy in Michael's class named Brad which paint him in two very different lights. When Brad's truth is finally revealed everyone learns an important lesson and Michael gains a new friend.

DTV Romancin'

This is another classic Disney holiday special; Disney was all about these in the '80s apparently. This one sets classic cartoons and scenes from movies to romantic music with short introductions by popular Disney characters. To be honest, I was not too into this one, but someone else may have differing tastes. It is worth watching at least once so you can brag about having seen the Disney Valentine's Day special.

Winnie the Pooh Valentine Treat

If you grew up watching Winnie the Pooh you will love this Valentine's special. It is pretty cheesy and full of off-key singing. There is a slight conflict which gets resolved and everyone kisses and makes up. The whole thing is pretty standard but it is a great special for some throwback nostalgia or to entertain a small child for about 24 minutes.

Pluto's Heart Throb

This cartoon short follows Mickey's dog Pluto as he battles Butch the Bulldog for the attention of a female Dachshund. Pluto gets all sorts of bashed and beaten, but he does it for love and eventually wins the attention of his paramour. It may not be the best example for young kids but it will take you back to simpler times when love was yucky.

Time for Love

This old-school Max Fleischer cartoon is about a goose love triangle. There is no dialogue and questionable content through the short run time. That being said, I love these old classic cartoons. Even though some of them are inappropriate and would never fly in today's world, I still love them because there is something so innocent about them. This short ends with the goose lovers floating off into the sunset with their necks making a heart...awwwwww.

There is a cartoon for every occasion and in some cases, there are five. I am sure I missed a ton of specials or shorts, but I am only one man. If there is one I should add to the list, let me know in the comments.
