Chaz Bono Is a Joke

Updated on November 29, 2011

Dancing wit the Starz Chaz Bono

Chaz Bono, a transgender male formerly known as Chastity Bono and child of music legend Cher made headlines everywhere when he was chosen to be on the latest season of Dancing with the Stars. Many celebrated his inclusion on the show's cast, especially those in the LBGT community as those who support LBGT rights. However, Chaz Bono's inclusion in the cast was not without controversy. Many right wing conservative groups protested Chaz Bono being on the popular primetime reality show. Mostly conservatives were upset at a transgender individual being featured on such a widely watched program. Controversy aside, what really mattered was Chaz Bono's performance on the show. Bono proved to be an inept dancer and ultimately a joke.

It is no secret throughout his lifetime, Chaz Bono has struggled with weight. He even was a cast member on another reality show, Celebrity Fit Club, on which he managed to lose some weight. Nonetheless, he still remained a fairly hefty person. His weight was what made him look like a complete fool while dancing. He floundered around his much slimmer partner during their dance routines. While a transgender individual being featured on a popular television is groundbreaking and will certainly provide inspiration for transgender youths and adults everywhere, that does not make Chaz Bono a good dancer.

Since his first performance on the show, Chaz has repeatedly been at the bottom of the leader board. The judges critiqued his performances harshly, pointing out his lack of technique in the various dances. Bruno Tonioli pointed out what a joke Bono really was, saying Bono was like "a cute little penguin trying to be a menacing bird of prey." Chaz Bono couldn't take the critiques as they were dealt. He lashed out on the judges on various occasions after judging. Chaz believed the judges critiques likened him to "[a] fat troll dancing with this beautiful woman every night..." The judges need not have made or implied such a comparison, as it was all too evident every time Chaz danced.

Though many applauded Chaz for being a transgender individual exposing himself to such a large audience, his lack of dancing skills was all too evident. Even when Chaz’s own mother, Cher, appeared in the audience in a much-publicized event, the judges were no less soft. Cher even took to Twitter to express disgust at the judges “unfair” critique. A mother’s pride is understandable, but that did not make Chaz’s performance any better. It is a shame Chaz needs his mommy to come to his defense when the mean judges make him feel bad. Finally, the audience realized that Chaz did not deserve to be in the competition and voted him off in the sixth week. Yes, it was a great thing for Chaz as a transgender individual to give inspiration to people everywhere. However, his bad dancing was not inspiring anyone.

Perhaps if he had made the effort not to look like a blubbering whale on the dance floor, his stint on the show would have been more inspiring. Luckily, he can continue to promote his message through his activism and hopefully not through dance ever again.

Chaz's dance moves were no great show, although I don't think that was entirely due to his weight. I do think he should have to handle the criticism to the same effect as everyone else, but I also appreciate that he at times faced more criticism due to his position as a member of the LGBT community.

Kudos for writing this. If marginalized groups are ever going to attain equality, they must deal with criticism equally. I can only imagine what the peddlers of identity politics are thinking when they read this.
