A Beginner's Guide to Cheryl Cole

Updated on January 22, 2011

Cheryl Cole - Childhood Star

Cheryl Cole was born in Newcastle, England in 1983 as Cheryl Tweedy. The showbiz life came early for Cheryl Tweedy as she modelled children's clothes and won various bonny babe competitions at a very early age. At the age of nine, Cheryl won a place at the Royal Ballet in London but quickly dropped out, finding the distance from her native Newcastle too much at such an early age.

It was at the age of nineteen that Cheryl made her first breakthrough as a singing star, auditioning for the new talent show, Popstars: The Rivals. Cheryl stood in front of Geri Halliwell, Pete Waterman and her current fellow judge on the X Factor, Louis Walsh. Stunned by her beauty and apparent modesty, the three judges unanimously agreed to send her through to the following stage. During the course of the show, Cheryl Tweedy quickly became a viewers favourite and was the first to make it to the prize of inclusion in the new girl-band, Girls Aloud.

Girls Aloud would go on to have huge success in the UK and Europe with a string of hits including, 'The Sound of the Underground', 'The Promise' and 'I Can't Speak French.' Several sell-out stadium and arena tours gave the girls huge respect within the industry - something not always the case with TV talent show winners. Cheryl would enjoy a fantastic relationship with the British press despite a series of 'bad-girl' antics. During a night out, Cheryl became involved in a fight with a restroom attendant and was arrested and charged with assault and racial abuse. She was later found guilty of assault but the charges of racial abuse were dropped. Cheryl always claimed she acted in self-defence.

Cheryl Tweedy became Cheryl Cole when she married the Chelsea footballer, Ashley Cole in 2006. A period of huge personal success followed as Girls Aloud continued to enjoy huge success. Cheryl became the face of Coca Cola Zero for its UK launch and signed a huge deal with L'Oreal. However, media reports of problems with her marriage to Ashley Cole were becoming common and in 2010 they split after several newpaper reports of Ashley Cole's numerous affairs.

Her marriage apart however, Cheryl was becoming a national treasure for her appearances as new judge on Simon Cowell's X Factor. This success came at a time when her solo career was taking off in a big way. Her first two albums, both produced by Black Eyed Peas star, Will.I.Am, both went straight to number one in the UK charts.

The 27 year-old Geordie lass is now at a crossroads in her career. Having recently signed an $8million deal with Universal, America is about to be 'Cherylised!' There are strong rumours that Cheryl will also be a judge on Cowell's new X Factor USA. Time will tell but at the moment this young lady can do no wrong.
