'Chicago Fire' Returns This Fall Without a Main Character
Big Change on 'Chicago Fire'
When Chicago Fire returns to NBC on September 26, 2018, there will be a big change at Firehouse 51 that no one wanted nor expected. The remaining cast and co-creator Derek Haas are in denial because they did not see the resignation coming.
During the finale, Monica Raymund who plays Gabriela "Gabby" Dawson announced to her television husband Matt Casey, played by Jesse Spencer, that she was giving up her paramedic position to take a job in Puerto Rico. Shortly after the finale ended, the 32-year-old actress announced she was leaving the show that she had been starring in for all six seasons since it premiered on October 10, 2012.
Haas told Us Weekly that he was shocked by Raymund's announcement. In fact, he said he was in denial. He said that she told the producers in plenty of time to adjust storylines.
However, that didn't keep him from being sad about her decision to leave the show. He said he was tempted to encouraged her to stay. Haas said the door is left open if Raymund ever wants to come back to Firehouse 51.
How Will Gabby's Absence Be Explained?
When season 7 returns, Haas said there will be a two-month time jump to account for her departure. This is to show how her former co-workers are dealing with her absence.
Casey's friend Severide, played by Taylor Kinney, will support the husband who has been left behind. After all, Severide has had his own share of heartbreaks on the series.
About Monica Raymund's Departure
In the handwritten note posted to Twitter back in May, the actress, 31, wrote that it was an honor to play Dawson on Chicago Fire. She added that it was one of the most meaningful experiences of her life.
Raymund indicated that she will still be a part of the network because she will work with NBC’s Female Forward Directors Initiative. It is a master class that helps women with directing. She is currently shadowing a director on Law & Order: SVU. Therefore, she is still part of NBC and Dick Wolf's creations.
No doubt, fans will miss Gabby. However, the brilliant writers will soften the blow by writing an excellent exit for Casey's wife. Co-creator Haas assured fans that Monica Raymund’s departure from the NBC show may not necessarily mean the end of her marriage to Matt Casey.
According to TV Line, writing a storyline about Raymund's departure was not what the writers had in mind for the new season, but they will do justice to Monica's storyline.
When Season 7 returns viewers will see how Casey deals with his wife's absence. That will go on for more than one episode as he adjusts to havine a long-distance marriage.
