Who is Chinami Tokunaga?

Chinami Tokunaga is a beautiful J-POP (Japanese pop music) singer, actress, fashion model and former member of the girl group called Berryz Kobo (means Berryz Workshop). For those of you that enjoyed my biographies about Saki Shimizu and Miyabi Natsuyaki, you will enjoy this one as well. Chinami was born on May 22, 1992 in Kanagawa, Japan. She is also formerly associated with Hello! Project. She is also one of those celebrities that is very cute even with short hair!

The early career of Chinami Tokunaga

Chinami Tokunaga got her start in the entertainment industry back in 2002 when she was a member of the unit called Hello! Project Kids. This was a group of 15 girls that were selected out of a total of 27,958 people that applied to get in. Eventually, these 15 girls were split into two groups. Some of them went into the group known as C-ute. Note: C-ute is a group that is essential for fans of Japanese pop to check out! Chinami Tokunaga was chosen to be a part of the group called Berryz Kobo in 2004. Joining Tokunaga in this group were the mentioned Saki Shimizu, Miyabi Natsuyaki, Maiha Ishimura, Maasa Sudo, Yurina Kumai, Momoko Tsugunaga, and Risako Sugaya. Tokunaga was a part of a few futsal (indoor soccer) teams between 2004 and 2007. Her mobile phone ended up being stolen and several pictures of her ended up on the Internet.

Tokunaga collapses on stage during a concert

During a Berryz Kobo concert tour in 2009, Tokunaga collapsed while on stage. A short time after the incident, Tsugunaga came and said that Tokunaga got too enthusiastic and used up a lot of energy and that she would be fine. Tokunaga later released a recorded message that confirmed the news. Unlike Ai Kago, Tokunaga’s career has been free of scandals.

Tokunaga’s collaboration with other artists

In 2009, Tokunaga was chosen to be a part of the group called ZYX-a along with members from Morning Musume, C-ute, and S/Mileage. These people were Risa Niigaki, Koharu Kusumi, Erika Umeda, Momoko Tsugunaga, Maasa Sudo, Ayaka Wada, and Saki Ogawa. Tokunaga left the futsal team called Gatas Brilhantes H.P. with four other members of the group C-ute. They all left on their own accord because they felt that they could not play at a high level due to lack of ability. But just because of that setback, this would not mean that Tokunaga’s career was over. In fact, her career was about to get better. In July 2012, Tokunaga was chosen to be part of another group. This one was called DIY (with a heart symbol). The other members of this group were Maimi Yajima, Miyabi Natsuyaki, Saki Nakajima, and Haruna Iikubo. This group released an Indies style single called Forefore Forest for Rest / Boys be Ambitious! They did this with the group called Green Fields. The single was released on November 7, 2012.

Tokunaga’s later career and exit from the entertainment industry

On March 2, 2013 at an event called Forest for Rest, Tokunaga was there with many other notable Japanese idol singers including Miki Fujimoto. She was again chosen to be part of another group, Mellowquad with Natsuyaki, Maimi Yajima, and Chisato Okai. It would be on May 26, 2013 that Tokunaga would appear on the cover of the magazine Rod & Reel. This was the first time that Tokunaga would appear on a magazine cover by herself. And then on June 8, her Twitter account would be closed. On May 22, 2014, Tokunaga would have a special birthday event to celebrate her 22nd birthday. She held two performances in Tokyo. On March 3, 2015, Tokunaga would graduate along with the other members of Berryz Kobo and the group would go into a hiatus period. Tsugunaga would then join the group Country Girls as a member. Tokunaga became an advisor for Hello! Project. On April 30, 2015, she was named as a co-host for the show called Green Room. Joining her would be Miyabi Natsuyaki. On November 25, 2015, Tokunaga’s agency Up-Front Promotions announced that she would be resigning from her position as adviser and that she would go to study English abroad. Tokunaga herself announced that she would be leaving in the middle of December 2015. So Tokunaga’s 13 year career is over for the moment but she may come back after her English studies are over.
