Rev. Margaret Minnicks writes for three different websites: Blasting News, HubPages, and Vocal. She loves sharing interesting things.

Chrissy Metz, whose real name is Christine M. Metz, is an American actress who is best known for her role in the popular NBC show, This Is Use.

Not much was known about the 37-year-old until she landed the role of Kate Pearson on the prime time series. So little is known about Metz that she had less than a quarter page of information on Wikipedia. Now her page is getting longer.

She was the least known among her co-stars and had only eight credits to her name when she got the part. Now she is among the ones being talked about.

"This Is Us"

Chrissy's performance on This Is Us has been exceptional. She has already earned a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film at the 74th Golden Globe Awards. She was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.

All of this happened after just one season on the series.

Metz's Two Credits In Films

Metz appeared in two films:

  • Loveless in Los Angeles in 2007 playing the part of Bonnie
  • The Onion Movie in 2008 as Heavy Girl

She has a role in Sierra Burgess Is a Loser that will be released in 2018. She plays a mother named Veronica.

Metz's Six Credits In Television

From 2005 until Metz landed the role as Kate in This Is Us in 2016, she appeared in six television shows. They were very small roles.

She appeared in only a few episodes ranging from one episode up to the longest period of five episodes in American Horror Story: Freak Show in 2014 and 2015.

Metz's Struggles

Metz has been transparent about her struggles. The Homestead, Florida native made her way to Los Angeles in a caravan and initially lived in a two-bedroom apartment in Burbank, California with five other women.

She shared that she had no savings and had maxed out all her credit cards that were accumulating interest. She was on unemployment. She bought ramen noodles from the dollar store.

By her own admission, she said she had only 81 cents in her bank account when she got the part in This Is Us. Now she makes $40,000 for every episode of the series. Now she can buy a lot of ramen noodles if she wants to.

Chrissy Metz's Support System

Metz struggled while she was auditioning for jobs that she never got. She is thankful that she never became homeless. She had a good support system. Her mother and stepfather pitched in to help as well as friends.

She lived with a friend while she was searching for an actress job. She had no money for acting lessons, so her roommate helped her with her lines and encouraged her not to give up.

Chrissy Metz's Life Has Changed

Chrissy Metz is better known in Hollywood now than she had been since she tried to get into acting about 12 years ago. She is getting back on her feet financially. She has paid off her credit cards debts and reimbursed her stepfather. She still lives with the friend who gave her a place to stay when she was broke. Now Chrissy can afford to pay her share of the rent and household expenses.

Chrissy Still Does Not Splurge

Chrissy knows what it is like not to have money, so she does not splurge. She said she feels guilty if she buys an expensive item. She jokingly said that she bought a pair of Alexander McQueen shoes and later had buyer's remorse so much so that the shoes are still in the box.

Metz was married for seven years before her divorce was finalized on December 11, 2015. She married British journalist Martyn Eaden on January 5, 2008.They separated in January 2013, and Eaden filed for divorce in November 2014 citing irreconcilable differences.

Timing Was Right For Chrissy

Even though Chrissy struggled before getting her big break, there are some things that indicate that the time was right for her when it did happen.

  • Three of the main characters on the show were 36 years old when the show first started. Chrissy had just turned 36. Therefore, she was at the age the producers wanted.
  • Chrissy went along with her sister to a casting call in her hometown in Homestead, Florida. A manager advised her to audition even though that was not the reason she was there. That's what gave Chrissy the idea to move to Los Angeles to become an actress.
  • Chrissy sings in a band, and she got to showcase her beautiful voice on an episode of This Is Us. In fact, she owns a band called Chrissy and the Vapors.
  • During Chrissy's struggling years as an actress, she was cast in only one episode of All of Us in 2005, and her name was Kate just as it is on This Is Us.
