Cheryl has been writing breaking news, spoiler alerts and recaps for daytime drama for several years and is a soap fan for five decades.

We all have free will choice

A number of years ago, Peter Reckel who portrayed Bo Brady on Days of Our Lives decided to leave the NBC daytime drama. This resulted in the end of one of the most beloved super coupes on television. Bo and Hope were adored and fans were distraught at the en of that era. Reckel returned a few years later to finalize things and his character was killed off. Christel Khalil, like Peter Reckel, made a choice that she believed was the right one for her, which was to go on recurring status. The difference is that on DOOL, Bo's wife Hope went on with her life. She has had other relationships and continues in her law enforcement profession and interacting with her family. Peter Reckel's choice did not hinder Kristen Alphonso's career on the show.

Sadly, Christel Khalil's choice affected the careers of at least four other characters on The Young and the Restless. The Ashby twins were sent off to college an have not been seen since, Daniel Goddard who portrays Cane has been fired and all the actors who would have played the role of little Sam as he grew, never got the chance. For whatever reason the powers that be decided to dismantle a truly lovely family. The writers have Paul and Christine maintain a marriage although they are rarely on screen. When Paull has scenes, he is usually working on a case an once in a while his wife shows up. Cane could have been given other storylines and interacted with his wife, whenever she was on the air. We all have free will choice and Christel Khalil is wished the best in her future endeavors. It is disheartening that when she did what she believed was right for herself, it broke up a belove couple and a beautiful family.

Cane and Lily say goodbye

On Friday's episode of The Young and the Restless Lily returned to Genoa City because Devon asked her to come back. She and her former husband had an awkward meeting at Devon's penthouse. Daniel Goddard put up a photo of himself and Khalil on Facebook and asked fans to tune in to Friday's episode to watch the end of an era. The final scene between Cane and Lily was not what loyal fans were expecting. A few weeks back Goddard tweeted several photos that gave the impression that "Lane" might reunite, but clearly he was wrong. What he perceived as a new beginning was actually the bitter end.

Last year when Christel Khalil decided she would no longer be on contract on The Young and the Restless, it was rumored that she was done with Lilly. The writers had her to cause the accident that killed Hilary and her unborn child. From the time she went to prison, Lily became distant towards her husband and things went from bad to worse until they divorced. There were so many other ways to handle this situation where Daniel Goddard did not have to lose his job. The powers that be could have opted to let Khalil go, recast the role of Lily and given her and Cane a happy reunion but they did not.

The end of an era

It's not known yet what Daniel Goddard will do next, or whether Christel Khalil will return to The Young and the Restless. Goddard has stated that he is clearly heartbroken and in shock that things turned out this way. His fans are feeling much pain as well. Social Media platforms have been abuzz for days about this sudden turn of events. Viewers have watched this couple grow as they dealt with infidelity, cancer and the trauma of trying to have children. They have broken up and reunited and fans probably thought they would endure like Victor and Nikki.

No date has been given for Daniel Goddard's final scenes but it looks like Cane will exit Genoa City without Katherine Chancellor's billions. At the end of Friday's episode, Jill notices that a stamp on the envelope that allegedly came from Chance was from the Maldives. She tells Cane this was supposed to be one of the stops on her bucket list and suspects that his father Colin is behind the situation with the will. Jill says she is going to investigate and find her ex-husband so things will probably be wrapped up soon. Be on the lookout for spoiler alerts to update this storyline and continue watching The Young and the Restless weekday afternoons at 12:30 PM EST on CBS. Please note this article is not blaming Christel Khalil but noting how the Y&R writers responded to her decision and the dynamic of the show changed.

I agree that the family should have stayed together. Lily went to jail, twins off to school and Neil passed away. Lily and Cane and the kids could have a ton of family story lines. Lilys mom could come back. They never found her body. She could wander into town and find her family. But instead, we lostlist everyone.
